mulher, do you mean that after 5 years that number would increase, instead of drop, as QM gets older?

No, I mean drop. To 10 % or less.

QMII is 76 and a heavy smoker. She is not a physically active as she used to be - I.e. dancing ballet.

Regardless there would in my estimation be around 5 % probability of QMII abdicating within five years.
That is if she become more or less paralyzed after a fall or a seizure. Or she is diagnosed with an irreversible medical condition - Alzheimer, dementia and so on.
In such a situation I believe she would feel it was okay to abdicate, because her time is running out and she will be increasingly unable to fulfill her duty.
That figure is IMO a constant and will also be valid ten years from now.
(Statistically speaking all Danes have an average 1 % chance of dying every year. Since QMII is now 76 that figure must have gone up to 2-3 % if not more. M&F in comparison probably have 0.5 % or less chance of dying each year.)

The remaining 10 % cover the many reasons why QMII, apart from her health, may decide to abdicate.
That goes from wishing to pass on the mantle while Frederik is still in his prime, and sparing him the sorrow of becoming king, while at the same time loosing his mother.
Perhaps to prevent Frederik from doing a Prince Charles - i.e. waiting forever.
To a wish from her to perhaps look after and care for PH.
Or losing the spark after PH's death.
- All sorts of reasons we can possibly come up with.

However if that does not happen within the next five years. Then QMII will be 81 and an abdication really doesn't make that much a difference anyway.
It will also be a very clear indication that QMII genuinely intends to stay on the throne until she dies, no matter what!
Because right now Frederik is as ready as he can be.

We can discuss forever whether QMII in that case is selfish or merely adhering to an old tradition.

Personally I believe there are times when you should make room for others to take over. And that I think is something QMII should consider these years.
Because Frederik has been groomed all his life for becoming a king and he is ready. The opinion polls point to the general public thinking that as well.
Also, with modern healthcare there is a very good chance of QMII living past 90.
By then Frederik will be in his 60's and past his prime. And we will be looking to Christian.

Monarchs were not expected to live that long. So while there was always the danger of a monarch dying too young, most heirs nevertheless took over while they were still in their prime.
With an average lifespan closing in on 100, for those below 60 today, medical breakthroughs within the next decade could very well result in say M&F living well past 100.
So we need to rethink the concept of: The king is dead, long live the king, or heirs in their 70's and 80's will become the rule rather than the exception.

And I would like the day Frederik become king to be happy day for him. With his mother standing behind him beaming like a beacon from pride.

But QMII is of the old school and that's why I believe there is a 85 % chance of her not abdicating within the next five years.

Thanks, Iceflower.

With our Marie being at a course, it's logic Joachim is still in DK.

This, to me, is the best view and reasoning for an abdication of a monarch. It enables a transition period where the baton is passed on to the heir yet the abdicating monarch is still very much a part of the monarchy, ready to assist and advise her heir and in general, take time to just breathe easier, enjoy the life around her knowing her legacy is well stabilized into the future. Its kind of like painting a picture then being able to sit back, relax and enjoy the emotions that picture evokes.

I think as the years pass, the old school sentiment of duty until death will pass as the younger generations realize that sometimes duty is knowing when its time to throw in the towel, hang up the gloves, put down the paintbrush and like a seasoned farmer, enjoy the harvest they've sowed and cared for.

It may not happen with the older monarchs and heirs such as Margrethe, Elizabeth and perhaps even Charles but I do think it will be a more acceptable thing in future years to come.

I think that her Majesty prefers being Queen as Prince Henrik is still alive.
He seems such a strange man !

Any non-Olympics events in Brazil can just go in the relevant current events threads.

I agree on both counts. Does anyone know of a reigning royal abdicating because of dementia or alzheimers?

I don't believe they would be allowed to. For abdication I believe they have to be of sound mind to make the decision. Certainly regents have served when monarchs in the past have been mentally incapacitated.

With the lack of any real power/role I don't really see the need for abdication. But perhaps the root the Lichtensteins take could be considered by the old guard. They don't abdicate but they slowly hand over the reigns. Hans Adam is officially head of state but his son Alois is regent, and runs the every day (in 2004). In 1984 his father did the same thing, Hans Adam becoming regent though not head of state until his dad died in 1989. Then again the Lichs actually have power. are more than figureheads.

i think thus far the danish royal family gets the trophy for the most committed royal family for the rio 2016 olympics (in representation at least) - the complete young generation of 2 princes, 2 princesses, and even 4 children in attendance!
i wonder if frederik and mary considered taking their children to rio too, like joachim and marie? it would have been nice to see both families together.

agree but not only to the Olympics but also to Denmark itself by visiting Danish Commerce and now this Pavilion (supported by the Kronprinsparret fund) that highlights "the best of Danish culture, business, sports and tourism, highlight Danish core values and competencies".
Denmark on Ipanema Beach 2016 | A Danish export drive to increase knowledge of Denmark during the Olympic Games 2016
A great tie in with the Olympics
It also looks like Mary attended an event with the UN Women executive director

Tomorrow the 2 couples will be visiting the Training Ship Denmark.

short video interview of Frederik in Brazil
Kronprins Frederik til OL: Hele verden vil Rio - TV 2

"Crown Prince Frederik is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where he was elected in 2009, where he was in the days to attend the IOC general meeting in Rio.
But then the crown prince thus help to promote Danish export and business facing potential investors and business associates who might be in Rio. It is estimated that about half a million people will flock to the Brazilian capital during the Olympics.
Business promotion takes place at the Danish Pavilion, located in one of Rio's beaches. The pavilion is the result of cooperation with VisitDenmark and Business and Growth Ministry. At the Olympics in London, Denmark had a similar pavilion, which attracted some 250,000 visitors."
