Summary of article in Billed Bladet #12, 2018.
Written by Marianne Singer.

Mary and QMII arrived in the town of Greve in separate cars. (Presumably Mary came from Amalienborg and QMII from Fredensborg.) Mary who arrived first curtsied deeply to QMII and in they went in order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Association to Promoting Needlecraft.

After a tour of the needlecraft museum it was time for QMII, who was in fine spirit, to give her speech.
She had donated a homemade gift calendar (for Victoria) to the museum and in her speech she said:
"I have, since I started having grandchildren, done like so many other grandmothers (*) and sewn Christmas calendars. And that was a piece of cake when there was one, and when there were two, and there were three, but then some more came along and then there were twins.
But I did come up with a form of Christmas calendar, which I myself think is pretty good. And which my grandchildren like and which their mothers hopefully also think is manageable. So it became a Christmas-heart, and for each heart, for each day, there is a motif, and then there is the possibility for sewing the name of the grandchild on top. I have now had this made for all my grandchildren and I hazard to guess that the basket is now full. So I'd like to pass on the possibility to others and may also find delight with that Christmas calendar".

A part of the museum's current exhibition is dedicated to handywork and sketches done by QMII, and this was a world she introduces Mary to.

QMII herself wasn't particularly interested in needlecraft when she was a child and teenager, but like all girls of her generation she had learned to master the basics. The one rainy summer at Gråsten, when she was 20 she did some embroidery and was hooked.

The calendar she has made will be put up for sale also as napkins and tablecloths. The pattern itself can be purchased in embroidery shops.

(*) There are three words for a grandmother in Danish.
Mormor = Mother's mother.
Farmor = Father's mother.
Bedstemor = Grandmother. - Not that many grandmothers are keen on being called bedstemor though. As it in many eyes implies they are ancient. :yoda:

On the other hand there is only one word for a grandchild in Danish that is currently being used. Barnebarn = Child of child.
Beforehand (some 100 years ago) there used to be five names for a grandchild.
Barnebarn = Child of child.
Sønnedatter = Son's daughter.
Sønnesøn = Son's son.
Datterdatter = Daughter's daughter.
Dattersøn = Daughter's son.

But here is this weeks issue of BB:

My mother has demanded being called "Bedstemor", since she is from Jutland and have both a son and a daughter :) That was the best so the future grandchildren didn´t had to fight whether she was "farmor" or "mormor" :) :) :)

My Danish stepmother is called "famse" by her grandson/my nephew. I hadn't heard it before he came along but it's apparently all the rage in the commuter belt around Copenhagen.

The three lovely Danish sisters arrive with the Dannebrog in Kolding last night where they attends today at the opening of the exhibition "Magtens Smykker" in connection with Koldinghus' 750th anniversary.

And what lovely pictures now 2018 and then 1950 of the sisters posted from the Palace

"It is more than 20 years since H.M. Queen, H.K.H. Princess Benedikte and H.M. Queen Anne-Marie all three have last sailed with the Dannebrog together.
Due to the fact that all three sisters were gathered again on Dannebrog yesterday, a picture that had been framed on the King ship since 1950 was restored."

Thanks Iceflower - I gather from Billed Bladet that it is 21 years since all 3 of the sisters have been together on the Dannebrog so I imagine they must have had a great night on board reminiscing.

Thank you Iceflower & LibrarianDaisy :flowers:

I notice the French ambassador is there as well: https://images.jv.dk/71/1620871_1280_854_0_0_0_0_2.jpg
He has become a well known but fortunately also a well liked face here in DK, for both tragic reasons and because he is very much out there at cultural events here in DK.
So to you here on TRF who are French, here is a fine representative for your country. ? :franceflag:

Lovely to see Queen Margrethe II,Queen Anne-Marie and Princess Benedikte all together at Koldinghus' 750th anniversary celebrations.

Loved watching the video of the sisters and the picture is just a wonderful tribute to the Dannebrog and their childhood. I do like seeing them all together having a nice day out.

Thanks, Iceflower. :flowers:

Life is cruel. Søren Haslund Christensen, who was a mentor for Mary, has Alzheimer.

Summary of articles in Billed Bladet #25, 2018.
Written by Karina Didriksen & Ulrik Ulriksen.

For the past week or so there has been an annual "folkemøde = people's/public meeting" on the island of Bornholm. I think it can be translated to something like a "political fair". I.e. a "the politicians meet the people, for discussions."
That has now taken place each early summer for some years now.
There has been some criticism for the event being elitist.

The timing is before the summer holiday season, so only those really interested will take time off from work to attend.
Bornholm is out of the way for most Danes, and it's more expensive going to Bornholm for me than it would be for me to go to New York for a few days!
So that means you have to spend quite a bit of money to even go there, which again rules out a large number of ordinary Danes.
So the meeting is in the eyes of ordinary people seen as a meeting where the politicians meet well-off retirees and higher-educated and as such people who earn well. - So how much of a "people's meeting" it really is, is perhaps debatable.
But the press coverage is very high, which is why every politician want to Bornholm go there!

But let's go the DRF. Along with politicians and press a number of organizations also descend on Bornholm in order to benefit from the many politicians and the press coverage. Some of these organizations are affiliated with the DRF and it was in that capacity Joachim and our Marie went to the island for a couple of days.
Joachim helped put focus on agriculture, the Diabetes Association and the Home Guard.
While Marie, who attracted more cameras, focused on DanChurchAid, The AIDS Foundation, the Civil Defense and the Ministry for the Environment and Foodstuff.

This year DanChurchAid focus on clearing landmines, so Marie was kitted up and issued and mine-sweeper. - No helmet though, we were after all supposed to see her. ;)
She told our reporter: "DanChurchAid to a huge effort and help with prosthetics and help people to get on with their lives. Because when the damage is done, what do you do then?
I have always had a great inteerst in relief work and I have read a lot about it. It is of course a different matter when you are in these countries, but for me it's natural to want to help and to see the reality - and especially going back to Denmark to tell about how it is.
I tell my children a lot and show many photos and explain what's on the photos. Children can understand much more than we think and they also want to the stories."

One of Marie's pet-issues is food-waste. - With good reason, because way too much otherwise good food is wasted here in DK every year. And there is good household economy in reducing waste. Not to mention how beneficial it is for the environment.
And this is where Marie met the Ministry of Environment and Foodstuff.
Marie stood in a tent with a chef demonstrating and explaining how to use every leftover possible. Some of the more fortunate present also got to taste the results.
Marie explained that she is pretty stern at home, both in regards to use leftovers and in feeding it to her children. There is no "dear mother" here! When the children are served leftovers, they have to eat it, period!
Fortunately that isn't a big problem since they are brought up that way.

Frederik also visited Bornholm. After having inaugurated Campus Bornholm, which will house the higher forms of education on the island, he headed a number of local politicians to the political fair on bicycles. Some of the politicians looked natural on a cycle - others did not...
Frederik focused on meeting and thanking the many volunteers behind this political fair.

It's lovely to see the 3 together at an event.

I agree. It's nice how they manage to continue having activities related to their mother in which the three sisters typically show up together.

Thanks, Iceflower.

You couldn't keep QMII away no matter what!
Aaaand if you are not that interested in looking at and discussing detailed historical trivia - at length(!) - it might indeed have been a good idea for Benedikte to do something else in the meantime... ?
I would love to be around QMII when she's in her history-mode, but if you are not interested in history and archeology it could very well become quite an ordeal!

Ribe is among the three or five oldest towns in Denmark. It was an important town during the Viking Age, because it was very much from here Vikings from southern and western Denmark sailed out for England or Normandy or farther away.
Back then the town was located next to a small river where the Viking ships could moor in safety.
Today the river no longer follow the same course and as such there have been countless artifacts from that period found there.
The town still very much looks like it did in medieval times. with narrow, winding cobbled streets and centuries old houses.
And at night the night-watchmen walk through the town singing on the hour that all is well.

Looks like QMII was in her right element!
No doubt willing to discuss planks and patterns for hours! ?

And an article from the local paper: https://www.jv.dk/esbjerg/Se-billed...g-besoegte-Ribe-VikingeCenter/artikel/2631923

With a (so far) 14 pic gallery.

QMII was welcomed by three flowergirls, three siblings, and she felt sorry for the children wearing their warm Viking Age costumes, but at least they were barefooted as QMII pointed out. So that was a nice experience the children thought.
The visit to Ribe Viking Center came to last three hours, with QMII eagerly asking questions about everything and discussing with the experts. (;))

As you can tell from pic 3, QMII was not only escorted by PET and local police but also ferociously armed housecarls.
They are wearing typical chainmail for the period. Designed to take a swordblow, and to limit the damage from stabs from swords and arrows (fired from a distance) but it would be of little help against axes, lances, javelins and arrows fired from a short distance.
But it made the warriors more mobile and gave them an additional edge against local peasants and militia when they were raiding.
And just as crucial, they would have a good chance of ditching the chain mail and survive if they fell into the water.
Notice the warrior on the right in the 7. photo. He is armed with a two-hand axe, in England known as the "Danish axe". It could, and did, take down a rider and his horse at the same time!
Housecarls were better paid (or gather well-gifted, because the loyalty to their chieftain was since ancient times very much based on gifts) than average being professional soldiers and as such were also very well-dressed. No housecarl with any self respect would be caught dead on a battlefield wearing anything but his finest! Viking men were actually pretty vain. - And bathed at least every Saturday, hence why English (and Irish?) girls found them attractive.
The church put an end to all that personal cleanliness here in DK by the 1500's though. What followed was some 350 years where people were less than particular with water and soap. :ermm:
