how can that be possible? my first language is spanish and i have been living in an english speaking country for more than 5 years... but my spanish accent didn't change at all and i doubt it does for the 99% of the people. when you are native in a language, there's very little possibility (to not say impossible) of your native accent degrading to that one of a foreign unless you leave your contry when you are really young. it's vitually impossible in my opinion.

No, if people around her speak "danish" english all the time... It might change quickly back into "Australian" English when she is back in Australia...
Everytime I was in Vienna visting my Vienna cousins, after a while me and my sister started speaking with a little Vienna accent and my Vienna cousins with a little german accent... that changed quickly back when we were back in Germany.
I don't know about Mary's English... to me it sounds normal. Also to me her Danish sound pretty good, but I am not that good in Danish... Do you think she still has an English accent?
Oh, and I really like her coat.

I listened to Mary's speech and I think she speaks with an Australian accent but quite a refined one.I am native english speaker and have noticed that in Australia there are many degrees of accent from the very pronounced to the type Mary has.The same could be said of North American english, from the American deep south to the small villages of Newfoundland both are English but they sound different.I have a feeling she is just trying to enunciate well so that everyone understands her easily.

Marlene, as an Australian you are right about the *Australian accent* thing...there are different degrees...the further North you go (Queensland, NT) it is broader, more ocker you could say...but further South is more refined and articulate...and Tasmania - where Mary grew up - is seen to be the exception...as my father used to say, "Tasmanians are more English than the English"...so combine that "Englishness" of the Tasmanian accent, with Mary's Scottish parents, growing up in Australia surrounded by different Australian accents, then marrying a French*/Dane...no wonder Mary's accent sounds a bit mixed up??!!!
*When everyone says Prince Henrik's Danish is awful and his accent is still so French (I have never heard Henrik speak, just hearsay) I think this might be the reason that Frederik's Danish gets criticised, because that is what he grew up with, his French father "trying" to speak Danish...and that is what Mary now has to contend with, learning Danish from a guy (Frederik) who in turn learnt it from someone with whom it was a second (or third or fourth) language...so Henrik has a lot to answer for

Mary never had a Scottish accent. She was born and raised in Australia.

Of course Mary has never had a Scottish accent, Tinika...but she was, and we all are influenced by the way our parents speak...
I am sure behind closed doors in the Donaldson household, circa 1980, young Mary probably said a few words and phrases with a definite Scottish flavour...but at school or with her friends (with Australian-born parents) she may have over compensate for this and spoke a bit more broadly Aussie, to fit in or to not be seen as TOO different...Now she is trying to once again "fit in" and adjusting her accent accordingly...

Sorry, but it can happen - I´m a native English speaker and I speak English with a "European" accent now, having lived abroad for 5 years. The problem for Mary may arise more from her speaking English with foreigners as she will adapt her way of speaking to make it easier for them to understand and may also pick up their way of speaking.

you are very funny! you said you don't want to compare but here you are comparing the Crown Couple of Denmark to the Princes of Asturias! Intrigues don't happen to Fred and Mary? hello? are you watching or perhaps reading the posts here? there are many intrigues and gossips about the Danish couple just like any other crown couple... or are you only limited to the news re the danish couple.. maybe bec they're your favorite. i can see that.. if you could just open your eyes there are so many gossip and intrigues re the danish crown couple....

We cannot see that for example with Letizia and Filipe, they only appear in public acts!!!To me this is really negative for them!

well, honey that would be bec they prefer going out of public related to their duties...i'm not saying that they don't actually go out other than their royal duties but hello we can see that F&L are not really those type of people.. How can you say that it is very negative of them not to entertain media when they are outside not doing anything related to their royal duties? why negative when some people think its good that you don't feed media lots of pictures concerning your daily whereabouts.

I'm arriving a bit late to the conversation, but I only just heard Mary's speech - and thanks to the person who posted the link, it was very interesting - and I wanted to say I think she still sounds like an Aussie, just a well-spoken one from a professional background. I didn't detect any unusual lilt.

I'm sure "your" beautiful, hardworking principes of Asturais are just like anyone else on the planet! "not those type of people" - that's actually pretty insulting to them, I would say.

Don't bother comparing Fred and Mary, and Felipe and Letizia. They have so many coincidential similarities in their relationships, but we have to remember: they are two different couples with two separate personalities as couples. Even in their courtships, Felipe and Letizia were more private: very few people knew of their relationship prior to their engagement. Fred and Mary were known about for some time. F & L are just more homebodies, and prefer to keep their lives, outside from their duties, very quiet. You have to remember, that is a lot like his parents, who are not overly visible aside from their duties. Fred and Mary are different: she, in particular, is much more open and trusting. They are very active people, in a couple where the monarchy is very popular, and are willing to give a photographer a smile or two, if then they will back off.
It is just personality- all the CPs are different.

I know this is completely off track but could somebody tell me where to find the pictures when Mary's hat blew off - I think it was when they were engaged?
Thank You

LadyS, I'm 99.9% sure that the pics are in the "Not Very Pleasant Moments Experienced by Royals" thread, in Royal ChitChat,--actually in the first post in it, by Carlota. (if you haven't looked at it for a while, it really is a hilarious thread)

And can somebody please explain to me and everyone else...a question about her shoes..Is that a big, black heavy duty bandaid on her ankles (to stop blisters) or is that part of the shoe?
They are in this picture too:

Thank you :)

I'm guessing it's a no-slip grip, to make shoes fit better. Often, when you are pregnant, especcially very pregnant, your feet swell and get wider. Sometimes you have to go up a size, but then they are a little loose. I expect that is Mary's problem, since she has those tapes on both heels. They do not look like bandaids, which I think would have been nude, anyways.
