The Brazilian Imperial Family (pictures and biographies)

H.I.&R.H. The Head of the Imperial House

Prince Luiz Gastão Maria José Pio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga, born in Mandelieu, France, on June 6, 1938, is the firstborn son of Prince Pedro Henrique (1909-1981), Head of the Brazilian Imperial House, and Princess Maria Elizabeth of Bavaria (1914-2011). Born as the heir of the Head of the Imperial House, Prince Luiz received the title of Prince Imperial of Brazil, with the style of Imperial and Royal Highness. His godparents were his maternal uncle, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (1913-2008), and his paternal grandmother, Princess Maria Pia, Dowager Princess Imperial of Brazil (née Princess of Two-Sicilies). Prince Luiz had polio as a child, which left him with locomotor problems for the rest of his life.

With the end of both the Second World War and Exile imposed by the Brazilian Republic, the Imperial Family was finally able to return to Brazil, in 1945, onboard of the Portuguese ship "Serpa Pinto". The Family went to live in Petrópolis, then moved to Rio de Janeiro. In 1951, Prince Pedro Henrique acquired a farm in the state of Parana, moving with his Family.

Prince Luiz studied at the traditional Saint Ignatius School, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1967, he graduated in Chemistry, at the University of Munich, in Germany. During the time he lived in Europe, His Imperial and Royal Highness was in touch with lots of Europeans Royals, many of them his relatives.

Returning to Brazil, the Prince Imperial went to live in the city of São Paulo, where him assumed his father's secretariat. With the death of Prince Pedro Henrique, in July 5, 1981, Prince Luiz became the Head of the Brazilian Imperial House.

Thanks to his letter to the members of the Brazilian Congress, the Clause that forbade Monarchist Movement in Brazil was put out of the 1988 Constitution. In the 1993 Referendum, he was prohibited to go to television, but he coordinated his Family, and the Monarchy was voted by 13% of the Brazilians.

Nowadays, Prince Luiz is still living in São Paulo, with his brother and heir, Prince Bertrand. His Imperial and Royal Highness is very active in the Monarchist Movement, presiding over Meeting and receiving Monarchists from all over the country.
