Imperial Family of Brazil 2: 2022 -

Reaction of the Count of Paris to the death of Prince Dom Luiz.
"I learned with emotion of the disappearance of my cousin Dom Luiz from Orléans-Braganza, which occurred yesterday in São Paulo following a long illness.

Madame la Comtesse de Paris joins me in conveying our most sincere condolences to her family, in particular to her brother Dom Bertrand who succeeds her at the head of the Imperial House of Brazil."

I wonder if there has been any reaction from the members of the senior branch of the House of Orleans-Braganza (the so-called "Petrópolis branch") to the passing of the head of the junior Vassouras branch, who was also the pretender to the defunct imperial throne.

Rest in peace.

Was official mourning declared by the government for Dom Luiz's predecessors?

From press reports, my understanding is that Dom Bertrand has already effectively been the acting representative of the family for some time. But seeing that the brothers were close enough to share a home together in their old age, this must nonetheless be a sad adjustment for him.

To me it appeared like a chaos. But RIP Prince Dom Luiz.

Why was the coffin opened again during the funeral Service? Looks a bit strange to me.

The open coffin is a bit morbid indeed. I missed the solemnity, the decorum. It looks like a funeral without rehearsal.

I also find the open casket strange. But it is normal in Portugal, for example, for the coffin to be open at wakes. But it always depends on the will of the family.
The Imperial Family of Brazil is very Catholic and conservative and probably because of that they wanted to keep this ritual.

On the European continent an open casket is traditional, to give opportunity to greet the deceased person and say a last farewell. But that is inside a chapelle ardente (which can be a mortuary or at home).

Usually caskets will be closed before the funeral service, never to be opened again.

If they are following the articles governing titles in the former imperial constitution, the head of the house should use the title of Emperor.

Thanks for the update. I believe Margarete of Romania is related to the Imperial House of Brazil via a maternal line? Hope she sees this from the cousins and makes one to clarify her line of succession, too.

The message that he "is praying for Dom Rafael to find a princess" who can join him couldn't be more blunt. Rather cringy actually.

The Imperial Family of Brazil, mainly the Head of the Imperial House, is very conservative and religious, even too much.
The Imperial House has to modernize and adapt to the new times, and I hope that happens with Prince Dom Rafael.
