This weekend Dom Pedro's heart was exhibited in the church of Irmandade da Nossa Senhora da Lapa in the city of Porto, Portugal. Saturday morning 800 people already visited the display.

The remains of the Emperor himself are interred in the Pantheon of the House of Braganza located in the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora in the Alfama district of Lisbon, Portugal. His heart was placed in Porto at his own request.

The heart is now on it's way to Brazil, where it will be exhibited in Brasilia. It is done so to commemorate Brazil's bicentenary.

I remember reading that his remains were reinterred in the Monument to the Independence of Brazil in the city of São Paulo in 1972, along with those of Maria Leopoldina and Amélie. Only the heart remains in Portugal.

You are correct, I should have written 'were' instead of 'are'. In the Bragança Pantheon an empty tomb remains.

Tomorrow there will be a ceremony in the Palácio do Planalto. Members of the Imperial family are expected to attend.
