Yea I don't buy that- the idea that just having beliefs and acting on them is a positive thing. That idea reminds me of a joke from the Big Lebowski when Walter rants about nihilists. The line is "Say what you want about the tenets of national socialism dude, but at least it's an ethos." That's obviously a joke, but the point I'm trying to make is that just acting on beliefs isn't an inherently good thing, you have to look at someone's actions.
I'll say as a clinic volunteer and someone who's escorted scared young women past groups of protesters out to make them feel shamed, scorned and dirty, that the type of activism Katie has participated in in the past is the opposite of Christian love and kindness. It's glorified bullying, and I don't ever like to see a bully be given a bigger pulpit.
The Catholic church has some fantastic beliefs and I think catholic social justice teachings are awesome, and I respect anyone who lives their faith in a way that makes the world a better place. I just believe that Kathleen's activities in the American pro life movement do the opposite of that and I would be thrilled if my country has seen the last of these two.
I don't wish anything bad on her and I hope her marriage is happy, but I hope she grows up enough to realize that the world is more complicated than she thinks and that as one who's been given much, she has an obligation to have empathy and compassion for those who don't have what she has, and that obligation is more important than advancing her own agenda.

I don't think the Church teaches that the Spanish Inquisition was not that big of a deal and that the harm it caused has been exaggerated.
This is an opinion that Mrs Habsburg has expressed.
You are correct about the Church's teaching about the sanctity of human life. But the Church also teaches that women who are in circumstances tragic enough to make the decision to have an abortion must always be treated with compassion.
That's the part of the teaching Katie chooses to ignore.

I don't think any of that discussion is relevant to this board. I know it's hard to walk a fine line on this and it's tough to talk about Katie's actions without getting into the underlying beliefs, but honestly, that's about the only thing we can do to keep this board from turning into a big old mess.
This couple is hard to talk about. A lot of us have strong feelings about them. I hope we can keep this board open, but I have a feeling the moderators will scrap it if it turns into an indepth discussion of abortion itself rather than about the actions, past and present, of the couple.

True. I've just deleted a response as I realize it would not be a positive contribution to the discussion.

I was surprised there was virtually no publicity at their wedding (Washington Post only had a small story a few days later based on Royal Musings' blogpost), and then they let reporters follow them on their "secret" honeymoon and Kathleen gave interviews. I wonder if for the wedding, Imre's discreet family was very insistent on minimal publicity, but now that the two love birds are on their own, they're inviting the media into their lives.

Kathleen strikes me as a young idealists who has not had enough life experience to view things with compassion and mercy. Things are not always just black and white.

I'm the same age as Kathleen so the "young idealist" thing just doesn't cut it for me.

I am also the same age as her and - well - some people are just more mature than others. In the end everyone is entitled to have his/her personal beliefs no matter what others think of it.

I have also deleted my message in which I referred to Kathleen's views about the Inquisition in history. I am somewhat hotheaded. Anyway, gone.

A little bit of discretion wouldn't hurt her (neither her in-laws). "For friends and fans she still Katie"??

clarification: the Washington Post called me after seeing my story. They wanted to do a story on the wedding (their religious writer was familiar with Katie - and the wedding editor wanted to do a story. Katie declined the offer. I also do not think there was any stories in the local Cincinnati paper where her family lives.) The Washington Post purchased the right to use one of my photos in the Reliable Source. The newspaper for the Arlington archdiocese also contacted me, and I allowed them to use one photo as well. Katie worked for Catholic charities in Arlington Diocese. . The only press there was one photographer from Luxnews and the official wedding photographer (and me ) They certainly did not seek publicity for the wedding in DC.

Are there any pictures of Archduke Imre and Mrs Habsburg at the Luxembourg festivities? Were they there?
