LA VISITA DE ESTADO QUE TODOS ESPERAN DEL PRESIDENTE Y LA PRIMERA DAMA DE FRANCIA
Sarkozy and Carla are on the way. The mass media are having two field days ahead, like Christmas and Easter together on one day. It was the same when they came to Britain, Carla-mania broke out in the papers despite the monarch being 82 at that time and no young princess around. It's easy to sparkle if you are a former top model with the world famous home country designers at your feet.
What I find way more interesting than who is wearing what or who looks better than who is how Sarkozy will deal with the height differences (stay away from Felipe at photoshoots!!!) - neither wearing his specially designed platforms or high heels nor standing on his toes will work this time. I guess Sarkozy has already nightmares about Letizia showing up in her double platforms what will leave him as the smallest person in the group.

 Can't wait to see that....
With the "Zapatero affair" i don't think the spirit of this visit will be particulary friendly....

for those who didn't follow the headlines, Sarkozy recently called Zapatero "a bit dim" trying to patch things up:

The press is mad, and the worse thing is that they report very badly and commit many mistakes. The Government has granted the Necklace of the Order of Carlos III to Sarkozy, to Carla the Great Cross that has a minor range. And another mistake that the journalists repeat, the wife of the President of the Government is only the wife of the President of the Government, is not the First Lady. The First Lady is the wife of the Chief of the State, and in Spain there are no the first ladies. The first lady is the Queen.

This may be because Sarkozy, unlike many of his European Counterparts, is no purely ceremonial figurehead but actually quite powerful as he shares responsibilities with the Prime Minister, Mr Fillon (ever heard of him? ), who would be Zapatero's counterpart.
We could already see in the coverage of the G20 that the media got confused with the fact that Heads of State (Obama, Sarkozy) attended next to Prime Ministers etc (Berlusconi, Merkel, Brown). They kept referring to Sarah Brown as "First Lady" what in fact she isn't, as you say lula, the wife of the Prime Minister is the wife of the Prime Minister, nothing more, it is the wife of an elected (male) the Head of State who bears the title First Lady, in Carla's case "Premiere Dame".

actually, carla's title is not "first lady" either. the french constitution doesn't recognize the role of the "first lady", and therefore there's no such figure. her title is simply the wife of the head of state, or mrs. sarkozy.
there was much debate on whether sarkozy actually said zapatero looked silly or not. i remember them saying he was actually referring to himself.
some info on their condecorations of the order of carlos III. http://www.antena3noticias.com/Porta...-Bruni/5720582

I am very excited with this State Visit. Spain is the the country which loves to receive it! I hope to see Letizia with a different tiara, since in the three last she used the same.
It's a pity Carla Bruni with not have any activit along Letizia (like visiting museum), the both would look great together. I do not want to see Mrs. Sarkozy overshadowing Princess Letizia!
And I truly hope height won't be a problem... (which is difficult having Felipe on it)

Carla Bruni's equal is Queen Sofia (wife of the Head of State) therefore both women share activities during the State Visit. Not being overshadowed by Mrs Sarkozy is pretty difficult anyway and any visible effort from Letizia's side would just make her look stupid and send out a wrong message. My guess is that she won't even try and the whole thing will be pretty low key from the Spanish "glam" side because any obvious "competition" takes away the focus off the State Visit itself (still difficult enough to keep it there, even without "competition").

I like her dress, but I personally think her blouse makes the outfit look cheap. (I'm not saying the blouse is cheap though. )
