On this day, February 12, 1689 ~ Demise of Marie Louise of Orleans, wife of King Charles II of Spain
 
Marie Louise d'Orléans was a granddaughter of both Louis XIII of France and Charles I of England.The queen's death was unexpected and left her husband heartbroken.

On this day 24 February 1500 in Ghent, the future King Carlos I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire was born.
 
Charles was born at the now largely destroyed Prinsenhof in Ghent and was styled Archduke of Austria,Duke of Luxembourg.

She was the first wife of Carlos II, the last Habsburg king of Spain. Carlos II's inability to have children led eventually to the accession of the Bourbon dynasty to the Spanish throne, which was contested in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).


Although already past its peak, Spain at that time was still a major European power and the seat of what was then probably the world's largest empire.

Surprisingly his mother Juana Enriquez de Córdoba was the daughter of a Spanish Count who's father was an illegitimate child of Alfonso XI of Castile.

1179: Alfonso VIII and Alfonso II, Kings of Castile and Aragon, respectively, sign the Treaty of Cazola, by which both kingdoms are divided into areas of conquest in al-Andalus: Valencia, Denia and Játiva for Aragon and the rest of Muslim territories for Castile.
1565: Felipe II commissions Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to conquer and convert to the Catholic faith of the indigenous people of the provinces of Florida.
1975: Infante Jaime de Borbón y Battenberg dies.

HRH The Infante Jaime of Spain, Duke of Segovia died in Switzerland only months before his nephew king Juan Carlos ascended the throne.

The Infante's remains were later transferred to the Pantheon of Infants of the Monastery of El Escorial for burial.

Marie-Louise d'Orléans or “Mademoiselle d'Orléans“ as she was known as at the French Court was a favourite of her fathe Philippe,Duc d'Orléans and her grandmother Anne of Austria.

Sadly when the princess was 8 her mother ,Henrietta of England,Duchess d'Orléans died.

March 29, 1788, Carlos María Isidro de Borbón, an aspiring carlist to the throne of Spain, was born.
 
On this day, April 2, 1545 ~ Birth of Elisabeth of Valois, daughter of Henry II, King of France. She was Queen of Spain, the wife of King Philip II of Spain.
 
Élisabeth de France was born at the royal chateau de Fontainebleau ,she was the eldest daughter and second child of Henri and Catherine .Her godparents were François I, Henry VIII, Éléonore d'Autriche (Queen of France) and Jeanne d'Albret (future queen of Navarre).

I always considered Blanche Ier as French rather than Spanish as she came from the house of Évreux which was a cadet branch of the French Royal House.

Sadly the Évreux ruling house died out upon the death of Queen Blanche in 1441.

April 4th,1284 : Death of Alfonso X of Castile


Alfonso X was king of Castile, León and Galicia from May 1252 until his death and had married Violante of Aragon in 1249.The king is buried at the Royal Chapel of Seville Cathedral.

Joanna of Portugal was the mother Joanna la Beltraneja who's paternity was the source of much rumour and was later displaced as queen by her aunt.

Alfonso II of Aragon and Count of Barcelona is buried at Sant Maria de Poblet Monastery ,the church became an important burial site for the Kings of Aragon.The French looted the tombs during the Napoleonic invasion of Spain but they were later repaired and resored.
