It's also the birthday of his illegitimate son John of Austria. He was born to a singer in the Palatinate in 1547. He met his father who saw to his education, and had him renamed John in honor of Charles mother. When Philip II ascended the throne he embraced his half brother who was recognized in their fathers will. Though he wouldn't give John highness title, he welcomed him to court and saw to his schooling. Charles had intended him for the clergy. He went to university with Philips heir. At court he was one step behind the royals but ahead of the nobles. He was involved in ceremonies including carrying his nieces to the font during their baptism. Instead of the clergy he had a naval career.

His mother Juana Enriquez de Córdoba was the great-great granddaughter of Alfonso XI of Castile and never lived to see the union of her son with Isabel de Castilla which she had been working towards prior to her death in 1468.

Just like today, May 23, in the Spanish Monarchy:

1533: The marriage between Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon is annulled.
1823: In Madrid, the Hundred Thousand Sons of St. Louis, a French expedition responsible for restoring the absolutism of Ferdinand VII, entered without resistance.
1845: The Spanish Courts vote on a new Constitution.
