On this day, December 23, 1910 ~ Birth of Maria de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Countess of Barcelona

The Countess of Barcelona and her sisters actually bore the name of Bourbon and Orleans. The additional "-Two Sicilies" was adopted by their half-brother Infante Alfonso after proclaiming himself the head of that house.

She was born as a Spanish princess and styled as a Princess of the House of Bourbon in her birth registry.

It's also the birthday of his illegitimate son John of Austria. He was born to a singer in the Palatinate in 1547. He met his father who saw to his education, and had him renamed John in honor of Charles mother. When Philip II ascended the throne he embraced his half brother who was recognized in their fathers will. Though he wouldn't give John highness title, he welcomed him to court and saw to his schooling. Charles had intended him for the clergy. He went to university with Philips heir. At court he was one step behind the royals but ahead of the nobles. He was involved in ceremonies including carrying his nieces to the font during their baptism. Instead of the clergy he had a naval career.

Don Juan of Austria himself never married during his short life but had two surviving illegitimate daughters Maria Ana of Austria and Joan of Austria.
