First lady to promote education in Liberia, Morocco, Spain

Michelle Obama plans to promote her year-old global girls’ education initiative during a late June trip to Liberia, Morocco and Spain.

The White House says the three-country trip is booked for June 27 through July 1. The first lady will travel with daughters Malia and Sasha, and her mother, Marian Robinson.

In Spain, Mrs. Obama plans a speech in Madrid about her education initiative. She’ll also meet with Queen Letizia.

malia's dress upon arrival was dangerously short - particularly for an arrival at an airport, where it is usually windy. i love on the other hand sasha's combination, even if i would also have preferred it to be longer for the daughter of the president of the US. what i liked is that sasha is sporting some henna on her hand - potentially done yesterday when she was in morocco!

James Costos, ambassador to spain from the US, was there to welcome them - he will be malia's boss shortly, as she will intern in the madrid embassy!

michelle will meet letizia tomorrow and have lunch with her at zarzuela.

Love the outdoor pictures you posted, Annie, thank you!

Here is the proof: Letizia does speak English

I find her accent quite strong and not easy to understand but no different from other Spaniards who did not grow up with the language. Penelope Cruz' English is not better and Rafa Nadal's much worse, despite being on the tennis tour circuit for over a decade.

i liked that she is speaking freely and not following a formal speech - i think this is one of the first times we've heard her speaking english in this manner. she made some grammatical mistakes and definitely has an accent, although you can tell that she was trained in diction - with some words sounding slightly british-accented.

and speaking about speaking freely: i liked this video where you can hear letizia speaking bits in english informally with michelle obama - not all of it is audible, but it is nice to hear royals speaking other languages informally outside from speeches:

also sweet to see how michelle runs towards letizia to meet her :)

I really liked Letizia's speech ,she came across as very natural and her English sounded a little on the posh side :D

I found her easy to understand, but agree that she does have a strong accent owing to the fact that she learned English as an adult. Letizia is an excellent public speaker IMO.

I had no problem understanding her.

Very nice! I've not heard her speak English before, and if she learned it as an adult she does quite well. Yes, a strong accent, but I understood all she that she said.

apparently michelle and her daughters went to have lunch at a popular restaurant in madrid after she met letizia. her daughters were shopping in the morning and joined michelle for lunch.

considering they are also girls, i think it reflected poorly on them and on michelle that they didn't support the conference 'let girls learn' with their mum, and that they decided to go shopping instead on a trip paid for by the government. it sounds like what paris hilton would do, not the daughters of the president, and think they should have set a better example.

more anecdotes in the link below:

apparently, letizia gifted michelle with 2 bottles, several centuries old, from la Real Fábrica de Cristales de La Granja.

felipe, along with leonor and sofia, came in private to say hi to michelle.

What great photos of Letizia and Michelle. Both ladies look lovely (as do Malia and Sasha). 'Let Girls Learn' is such a great initiative and I'm glad to see Letizia involved.

This video from their meeting a Zarzuela is great, they seem to have a very friendly, animated talk ;)

This was wonderful to see...they seem to get along very well.

I thought Letitia's speech was very nice and it was nice hearing her speak English.

The pictures from the palace of the two ladies were really nice. They looked like they have a good friendship but then maybe it's a nice warm welcoming.

I can easily imagine both women forming a friendship above the 'business contact' I cant remember who it was but one first lady told the press that Letizia envied her for going 'back to normal' or a career after a certain amount of time, like Michelle, who will have a pick of many very well paid career options after Obama gives up the presendency, is free to do what she wants while Letizia's position as Queen Consort is for life.

I also like the fact that the US First lady was welcomed at Felipe and Letizia's private residence and not at the main Palacio de Zarzuela.

:previous: Yep, they usually use their residence instead of Zarzuela's main building for especially close guests (i.e. W&M or Naruhito), so it's possible that Michelle and Letizia have connected well during their previous meetings and developed sort of a friendship.

Probably friendship between high representatives like them is very different from what we, the ordinary people, understand as friendship, with just some few meetings during a year, but still I guess some bounds can be formed when there is a connection and mutual sympathy. The talking they had seems very natural in the video, with Letizia explaining the advantages or disadvantages of having the main building "one minute by car" and something about the flowers in her garden :)

Yes I noticed that Letizia was proudly showing the First Lady the floral displays in the garden, perhaps they spoke about gardening when Letizia was at the White House last September.

:previous: The lunch at the Royal Palace will be interesting. The leaders of the main 4 political parties are invited (Rajoy from PP, Pedro Sanchez from PSOE, Pablo Iglesias from Unidos Podemos and Albert Rivera from Ciudadanos). Will Señor Iglesias be decently dressed for once, or will he greet Obama in the shirt he uses to meet the King?

(Meanwhile, his partners in the coalition, Izquierda Unida, are organizing protests against POTUS visit...)
