Future and Popularity of the Spanish Monarchy

I am sure that is being very positively by the Court.

I watched Pedro Sánchez’s investiture debate on Saturday and Tuesday in the Spanish parliament and I must say I was surprised with the overt atttacks on the King . Even more surprisingly, Mr Sánchez, the prime minister nominated by the King , not only refrained from defending the monarch against the attacks of the separatist and ultra-leftist parties , but actually had the audacity in his final intervention of quoting the last president of the Second Spanish Republic, which prompted a reaction from the center-right and far-right benches with cries of “ Viva el Rey”.

I don’t think the monarchy is in any immediate danger, but the polarization seen in the debate, where several speakers ( on both sides, including the far right Vox party) used language reminiscent of the Civil War era, is scary. And the Sánchez’s government, in coalition with the communists and neoleftists of Unidas Podemos, and backed by the Catalan and Basque separatists, was invested with a ( simple) majority of only two votes, which does not bode well for the stability of this parliament.

EDIT: Following Sánchez’s intervention, Pablo Casado, the leader of the main center-right party (PP), praised the King as the symbol of the continuity of the State ( or something like that, I.don’t remember his exact words) and new cries of “ Viva el Rey” were heard from the opposition benches. Curiously, the leader of the ( more moderate ) Basque Nationalist Party ( PNV), who voted to invest Sánchez as PM, accused the opposition of endangering the political neutrality of the Crown by suggesting that the Crown was siding with the opposition against a coalition government that the right accuses of illegitimacy , which is legally incorrect, not least because, under the constitution, it was the King himself who charged Mr Sánchez with the task of forming that government. An interesting debate indeed !

Is the former King incapable of not causing controversies/scandals for the Royal Family? I'd like to not see a Third Spanish Republic in my lifetime but at the same time I'm worried that the same man who legitimized the monarchy could very well be the reason why his own granddaughter doesn't become the first queen in a long time.

Why are you pointing to Juan Carlos? I can list a handful of royals with "scandals". By the way, British royals bedecked with Saudi diamonds fall in the same category. Going out and about in glittering diamonds given by despotic rulers where heads are chopped off, people are whipped or stoned to death.

Juan Carlos had his "gift" in cash (with a hypocrite Spanish Government knowing it). EIIR, Diana, Camilla had their "gifts" in carats (with hypicrite British Governments knowing it).

The Dutch Prince Consort was open for "gifts" to help his Government persuase to buy 213 fighters (F-16). Gifts he needed to accomodate his "poupette" and his second illegitimate daughter in a fancy recidence in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.

All these monarchies still exist anyway.

Of course Felipe will need a clean image if he wants to survive on the throne but he has known who his father is all his life and that he did not keep the throne for his family by being an altruist. Felipe will know a lot of dark secrets that were acceptable in the climate of the past decades but not anymore.
So Felipe has to find a middle ground between clean and keeping some of the family fortune, just in case.

King Felipe HAS a clean and down to earth image, remarkeble and refreshing, and most of all±responsible!!Great man.

Felipe has never been involved in scandals and has a clean image and respect for the Spaniards. He has done everything to cleanse the image of the monarchy. He's not to blame for his father's scandals. Juan Carlos, despite everything he has done for Spain and democracy, has also made many mistakes along the way. If the monarchy exists today in Spain it is thanks to Felipe.

Spain has bigger issues at the moment, but I will state that King Felipe with Queens Letizia and Sofia are doing a wonderful job.

Yes Felipe and Letizia together with Queen Sofia, are doing a good job.
I believe the monarchy will survive. After all, the monarchy is what still unites Spain.

We must also look at the positives and the opinion polls are good for the King, queen consort and queen mother.

But will it remain so. Read in german articles that a lot of spaniards did not watch the speech of HM but instead went outside on Balconies to protest against the Monarchy. And that the King and Queen are almsot invislble now in this hard time for Spain.

Perhaps the should have a look to Belgium what the royal children there have done.

It was the King's most watched speech in years.

Unfortunately in Spain, Podemos, one of the parties in the government, and the pro-independence groups have tried to use the tragedy to attack the Crown, have wanted the Crown to cover up their lousy management. But their actions have turned against them, and yesterday the protest against them was much bigger than against the Crown.

I don't think the Belgian image worked in Spain ... first because in Spain people usually see these things as image campaigns. Second, because the situation in the nursing homes in Madrid is so critical that with sweets they would solve little. Third, because many would comment that some enjoy large palaces and gardens, and other children are confined to small apartments.

Queen Letizia is in quarantine for contact with a positive, and she is taking it very seriously, she is separated from her family. With the criticism that there are towards some politicians for not fulfilling the quarantines correctly, at this moment it is important that they set an example.

Do not paint a rosy image on Belgium. There the Belgians are FUMING about the inertion of their politicians to form a majority Government, even in this severe crisis. There is now an emergency Government with no more than 38 (of the 150!) seats in Parliament and without majority at Dutch-speaking side. The anger is immense. Yesterday the palace published a picture of the four kids baking waffles. I better spare the vitriol, the sarcams and the biting critique of the "puppet theatre in a failed state" on social media. The anger and resentment is deep and no sweet royal kid with a waffle can do anything about it.

I dare to say that the existence of the State (and the monarchy) is in danger. And that is not in Spain but in Belgium. Exactly the one with the waffle-baking royals.

Monarchies do not fall because of a royal having a child out of wedlock or because a royal was open to favours. They fall because the Constitution of their state is rotten. And that is the case in Belgium. Only Corona keeps the focus on other affairs but the day of reckoning is coming. Once the collapsing debts of the recession have to be paid. All polls predict a HUGE majority for the separatists in Dutch-speaking Belgium. Even so that no any traditional political party (Christian-democrats, Socialists, Liberals) score more than 10%...

Spain, with old Juan-Carlos is safe compared to Belgium. And this shows that being a "Perfect King" (Felipe or Philippe) does not help, when the fundament is rotten from within.

How reliable are those German articles?

How reliable are those German articles?

Reliable. But it were mainly balconies in Catalonia and in Basque, I suppose. You can see them on Facebook accounts of openly separatist Spaniards. Making noises or spitting towards television or showing genitals while Felipe spoke and demonstratively posting it.

German Daily Mails/Sun/Star then?

Sensationalist media at the very worst.

Disgraceful behavior.

I guess there is truth in them but it always depends where you look, you get one impression or the other.
As always, why would Felipe take the fall when the government/politicians are more unpopular than the Crown? All he can do is talk and lead by example, it's those elected by the people who have to take action or fail to do so.

You can call it disgraceful media but in this case they only factually reported that there were wide protests during King Felipe's address and especially his fierce claim that "Spain is more united than ever" resulted in loud boos.

But what i meant was the belgian RF not the politics which uis a complett different Issue. The belgian King and Queenm are trying to build a positve Image while in Spain the King waited for days and days until he finally held his speech. The spanish King could also follow example of the daniosh RF to spend some Money

That was in Catalonia. In other parts of Spain this did not happen.
We all know that a part of the people of Catalonia want independence, so I'm not surprised....

How can the Spanish RF do something similar when the queen is under quarantine or do the German tabloids not publish that fact too?

As far as i know the King is not in quarantine and the Infantas also not.

And one can also spend money if one is in quarantine or not? Or send out a Message like CP Haakon and MM for example.

The King has already helped Spain by using his contacts to arrange half a million COVID-19 masks and screening kits. And the King and Queen are sure to do even more things to help.
The King and Queen are aware of what is going on and will certainly help.

The Spanish Royal Household takes seriously that of being a Parliamentary Monarchy. The king does not speak without prior government approval, and the government only gave it to him once measures had been approved and these had been endorsed by parliament.

Unfortunately, at this time, many actions of the Royal Household are conditioned by the government's desire prominence and confrontations.

Quarantine is no excuse, as we can see doing things online is the thing to do.
My yoga studio does now online classes, no problem.
If the SRF wanted to send a message - apart from the formal Head of State speech - eg as a family including the Queen or the Infantas, they could do without any problem.
But not even their website is functioning properly so it may be too much to ask.

Has the President of the Government put the King aside a little?
I think King Philip VI has done a good job and done what he should do.
How do you think the current situation of the monarchy is? Is the monarchy in danger today?

The Spanish RF are not really that media savvy ,the website is constantly crashing and given the state of emergency in Spain and adhering to the Social Distancing guidelines the Infantas out in public would not be such a good move and irresponsible .

The king could draft in his sister Elena during this crisis while the queen is still under quarantine.

Don't think they should go out and visit Hosptials etc but perhaps they could make a little Video in the Palace Gardens of the King and his daughters and relese that to the Public.

Or give a message on their Instagram if they have one with a pic.

I don't think they have an Instagram account ,communication was much better and more frequent under the reign of King Juan Carlos.
