I have read once, at Point de Vue, that when JC & S were a young couple living in Madrid under Franco, they were spied at every moment of their life by Franco's people, in order not to be able to try any plot against them, and one way to keep the couple bound, it was not to allow them to have any money. All their needs were covered, but they did not have cash at all. They managed to have some little cash, from the Greek State, which was giving a salary to JC as an officer of the Greek Army, and also thanks to the generosity of some "Grands d' Espagne" families, and especially of the Duchess of Alba.

This is the reason I'm astonished they did not attend, maybe not for protocol reasons, but for human reasons.

For me as well, and I am not talking about F&L but the old Kings. Its strange that Sofia is busy holidaying and doing non-official events like opening museums in Greece and non-member of the SRF is sent to attend this funeral.
There are close ties from the past that could still be seen a while ago.

Infanta Elena went as the representative of the King. Zarzuela said months ago that while Infanta Elena is not member of the Royal Family, she could represent her brother on special occasions.

Also King Juan Carlos sisters often represented him in events related to royalty or nobility, although they were never part of the Royal Family . They do not represent the Royal Family, but represent the House of Borbon.

The funeral of the Duchess was not an official or state funeral, so the presence of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, in this massive televised funeral in Sevilla, was not appropriate. King Felipe had his own acts in Madrid today.

King Juan Carlos or Queen Sofia who maintained a friendship with the Duchess for decades had been the appropriate representatives. But Queen Sofia is on a private visit in Athens since last week, last night attended the opening of an exhibition of El Greco and a conference today. And it is not known where King Juan Carlos is.

Probably in the next days the family will organize a mass in Madrid, and it is easier than a member of the Royal Family goes.

Elena was for almost 50 years an official member of the royal house, is the eldest daughter of JC and the sister of the current King. Highly doubt the Alba family felt snubbed.

It's obviously that members of any royal family couldn't attend any funerals next day after the death. It's too short notice. I really don't understand why the duchess' family desided to organize the funeral so quickly.

As I don't think there is a better way to remember Doña Cayetana than her pictures, here is another nice gallery, this time from Royalista

Yes, they have organized it quickly, probably because they expected it and the whole family was in Sevilla. And probably because they want to end the show with the press.

Viewing images and photos, few famous or important people and nobles have gone. It was more like a funeral for people of Sevilla and her friends there. So I think that with more time, the family will hold a mass in Madrid.

To me there is love in the Alba family and specially the new Duke of Alba.
He could have lead the funerals but no she shared with his mother 's last husband.
Certainly a promise he did to his Mother.
The family is devastated , specially the late Duchess Daughter.
Very positive Articles about the Duchess of Alba in the Newspaper.

surely pilar could attend nuevo futuro by herself, it would be totally understood given the circumstances.

not at all. reportedly, the duchess of alba was the person who helped introduce sofia to spain and spanish traditions when she arrived from greece. they apparently were in touch often on the phone these days. to me, the attendance of sofia would have been appropriate.

i loved reading the story of the duchess being playmated with queen elizabeth whilst she lived in london (her father was the ambassador to spain), or of her hosting meetings and galas where she would invite the likes of jackie kennedy or grace kelly, who no one else was able to do before her, as jackie and grace didn't get on.

That's interesting, thank you both for the information. I'm an Anglican and most of my family are members of the Church of England, so am used to attending the funeral a few weeks or even a month after the actual death or so. But within that spare time, there's all the paperwork and forms to fill out, as well as writing the eulogy and order of service.

Some private possessions of the Duchess were distributed among her children, as a condition for accepting the marriage with Alfonso Díez.

The Duchess has given nobility titles to all her children. Carlos will inherit the titles linked historically to the House of Alba, and her second son Alfonso already has the titles of the House of Hijar (belonging to the maternal grandfather of the duchess, at Cayetana's death he established to separate them from the House of Alba).
Ah OK, thanks for the information lula. I wasn't aware of the foundation. It's normal that other possessions will be passed onto the Duchess's husband and other children, as that usually is mentioned in wills.

She was a great lady, full of vivacity and personnality. She had a full life, she did everything as per her own path and choices, but she never lost esteem and love of her family, friends and "her people".

RIP Dona Cayetana, you did not have Goya to paint you, but you will stay to our memories, as per your homonumous ancestor.
