Why wasn’t Pedro ii of Brazil- Pedro V of Portugal
Pedro was the only surviving son of king Pedro IV, yet his daughter Maria succeeded him. I wanted to know how did that happen. And why aren’t Pedro’s line- the house of Orleans-Braganza not regarded as the senior heirs to the Portuguese throne.
Did Pedro iv renounce his son’s rights when he abdicated? As far as I know when you do that it’s for all your descendants, not selectively. Is there any official document or statement explaining how it happened?
Or was there really a law allowing only people born in Portugal to become a monarch? (The basis I guess for the claim of the dukes of loule if I’m correct?)
Please someone help explain this.
