D. Duarte asked the cable History Channel to prepare a couple of documentaries: one about D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and another about the period when the Portuguese court was moved to Brazil. The suggestions were made last Tuesday, in Lisbon, during the presentation of D. Manuel II, Rei Traído (a documentary that the cable channel will air next February 25 and which had D. Duarte's participation.
D. Manuel II was the last king of Portugal and lived the exile in Twickenham (outskirts of London), where he became godfather of 300 children..

DN Online: Deputado queria usar tÃ*tulo de 'dom'

A recent book was published by Nuno da Câmara Pereira (from the Monarchic Party) calling D. Duarte "the Usurper" and saying that it's the Duke of Loulé who should be the head of the Royal House and the presumptive heir to the Throne.

D. Duarte reacted now to the polemic created by this book and explains that the current Duke of Loulé (D. Pedro Folque de Mendonça Rolim de Moura Barreto) had asked him to use the noble title and, by doing so, he proved that he recognizes D. Duarte's legitimacy, so such dispute is not even considered.
The Head of the Portuguese Royal House says that he does not understand why Câmara Pereira is raising the question now and explains that he even used to have a good relationship with him.

Monarchic experts explain Câmara Pereira's "rebell" by this: some time ago, he has asked D. Duarte to use the courtesy of 'Dom', but D. Duarte sent the subject to the Conselho da Nobreza (an entity that used to decide on nobel matters) and this entity didn't authorize Câmara Pereira's request. Since then, he became D. Duarte's enemy.

The book is very, very interesting. It shows the other side of the Succession's story. The goal of the book is to show that D. Duarte Pio has no rights to the Throne.
I am just sorry that this book was written just to get revenge from another person Revenge is never a good thing. I remember to hear Nuno da Câmara Pereira and his brother, two fadistas, praising the Dukes some years ago... the reason why they both chnaged their devotion by the royal couple is just sick, imo.

Jornal de Notícias - Último rei de Portugal renasce no Canal de História

"D. Manuel II, betrayed king" is more than a mere biographical report; it drafts a historical portrait of the socio-economic and political context that surrounded the life of an 18-year-old man, a lover of music and literature, who was thrown to a throne, which he had not been prepared for, after the violent murders of his father and brother, and who suddendly died in 1932, without any descendant.

Through videos and photographs (two of the king's passions), as well as his private journal (which accompanies his whole life and where he describes with detail the 1908 regicide), this 55-minute-long documentary rescues one of the most unknown Portuguese kings.

Aired last Monday, it was directed by Rui Pinto de Almeida and counted on Prof. Mendo Castro Henriques' historical consult and included, among others, the testimonies of D. Duarte de Bragança and of Doris Bligh, a contemporary neighbour of Twickenham (London), where D. Manuel II and his wife, D.ª Augusta Vitória, lived the exhile and who still remembers the monarchs.

"That locality still gathers a collective memory of D. Manuel II. Between 1914 and 1932, the king became the godfather of 300 British children, which prooves his charisma and afectuon", says the producer Rui Pinto de Almeida.

PortugalDiário - A informação actualizada ao minuto: as últimas notÃ*cias do paÃ*s e do mundo.

In a classroom from elementary school, the teacher asks a pupil: "What color is the flag of Portugal"? The reply was given firmly: "It is white and blue"! The teacher says it's wrong; that the flag is green and red, but the child insists: "No it's not; those are the colors from the flag of the Portuguese Republic, not of Portugal"!

The episode took place in the classroom of one of the children of the Duke of Bragança, D. Duarte, and was shared by himself, during the presentation of the first video encyclopedia on national history: "Kings of Portugal".

During 50 hours, the 36 dvds constitute a lesson in Portuguese History, with the scientific coordination of Prof. Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão and the participation of D. Duarte Pio. The main goal of this work is to keep the memory of the 35 kings of Portugal alive.

According to D. Duarte de Bragança, "some of the best Heads of State that Portugal ever had were D.ª Maria I and D. Dinis, for their strategic vision, while the most disastrous king was D. José, because the Marquis of Pombal was the first tyrannous dictator in our history".

This set of documentaries portray all the stages of the Portuguese history, from the Roman invasions to the October 5th 1910, when the Republic was proclaimed. The videos include commentaries of D. Duarte about his ancestors and they ought to be a pedagogical instrument.

a Voz do Minho

Last friday April 4th, Maria de Fátima Castro presented her book at the Municipal Library of Barcelos. It's entitled “Memórias da Dinastia de Bragança na Documentação da Misericórdia de Braga” (Memories of the Bragança Dynasty in Documentation of the Mercy House of Braga). All the money achieved by this book (which costs 10 €) is going to help the Timorense people that are studying in Portugal, under the agreement signed between both countries.

The author mentioned that this book is intended to pay a sensible homage to everything D. Duarte has done for Timor, thus expressing admiration "for his affection and commitment towards all the Peoples who speak Portuguese, especially those who are still consolidating their democratic states".

EMAS stands for Europe, Mediteraneum e Arab Countries. It's an annual conference held by the “International Award for the Young People – The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award” (of which the Infante D. Henrique Award is its Portuguese version). It aims to reward young people for their civil participation in different areas of the society.

Here'sa video from last year's conference:

D. Duarte, along with other prominent figures (Cavaco Silva, José Sócrates, Henrique Granadeiro, Mota Amaral, António Guterres, Basílio Horta, Alberto João Jardim and Valentim Loureiro), was asked by Felícia Cabrita and Ana Sofia Fonseca to be one of the witnesses in the case of Pinto da Costa's biography "Luzes e Sombras de um Dragão".
According to the attorney, the aim is to get all these personalities (whose biografies were written by Felícia Cabrita) confirming that none of them had read the content of the respective books before its publication, nor were they asked about any authorization for the publications.

However, the witnesses won't be heard in court, since the judge considered they do not have any relevance for the substance of the present case.

I didn't know Prince Guillaume and Princess Sybilla were there too. Are they also involved with the DoE awards maybe?

Answer to whom? To the Court? If the Jugde decided to hear those witnesses (Dom Duarte included) that Felícia has requested, they would have to be present on the Court to answer.

Mensageiro Notícias - D. Duarte defende comboio

D. Duarte, along with members of the Institute of Portuguese Democracy (who are preparing a study about transportations in Trás-os-Montes) visited Bragança (on April 25th) and Mirandela (on the 26th), in order to meet the mayors of these municipalities. The Duke of Bragança stated that the region must be endowed with a modern train line, between Douro and Puebla de Sanábria and extending the line of Tua until Bragança and then to Spain.

These events were promoted by the Institute of the Portuguese Democracy (of which the Duke of Bragança is its honor chairman) and aime to support the development of this province, namely concerning the navigability of the river Douro and the railroads between Alto Douro and Spain.

The next visits taking place now are to Boticas (on August 16th, about the "Portuguese Community") and to Lamego (August 12th-13th, about "Patrimony").

Notícias do Douro - 02-05-2008 - Sociedade - Duque de Bragança visita Bragança e Mirandela para discutir desenvolvimento sustentado da região

According to this article, the Duke of Bragança is against the construction of the Barrage of Tua and instead he defends the prolongation of the railroad to Spain. He believes that the the barrage will bring little advantage to the region, while the railroad may be a tourist asset and a cheaper alternative, due to the price of fuel.

Rádio Voz da Planície 104.5 FM ---- Beja

Today, the Duke of Bragança is in the South.
After participating in the conference "Dom Carlos, a Constitutional King for Democracy", D. Duarte visited the Ovibeja fair and once again brought up severe critics to the figure of the President of the Republic, whom he accused of knocking down Governments, rather than an being an impartial referee.

He was referring to the present president or to Portuguese presidents in general?

Just out of curiosity, what would such a conference be about? King Carlos obviously, but what is there to discuss & even more so, to dedicate an entire conference to it?

Marengo, although the article states that the Duke of Bragança criticized "the President of the Republic", I guess it's misquoted (you know, it's from a small local radio... unfortunately that's the only kind of press to interview the Duke of Bragança: local papers and yellow press). I believe he was referring to presidents of the republic in general, since that's what he constantly repeats, day in day out. Moreover, Mr. Cavaco Silva is well-known for being quite cooperant with the present Government, so none of this makes sense actually...

I believe it's still one of the many events taking place this year to remember the regicide.
