Mainly to Regina:
About Maria Barroso:
You are confusing "being a lady" with "being a well-dressed lady".
You certainly know the old say: "You can dress a monkey in silk, he will always be a monkey" .
I don't dispute that Mª Barroso is a well-dressed lady.
She was friend of many portuguese designers who lend/offered her their dresses as it was good publicity for them .
And the Soares clan is today a very very very rich one, so she can aford buying the best designers and materials.
Well, they had that little (big) mislap with BPP , but they were not the only ones.
And I am sure they will in the front line when the bank will start paying - if they have not received "under the counter" yet .
My opinion is that the woman destiles poison.
The way she talks, all the resentment one notices she still has all those years later, when so many others were more persecuted than her husband, tortured or murdered.
As I always said, the actor in the family is Mário, not Maria .
You said you were too young when Mário was President but I still remember quite well on some parliamentor presidential campaign, Maria in minks and leopard touring the poor deserted villages of Beiras and Trás-os-Montes asking the poorer people to voto on them as only they could raise their incomes
As to João Soares the most commented story at the time revealed the plane was full of ivory - with the compliments of the late Jonas Savimbi.
Another story that was going arond said he insisted he would pilot himself the plane :w00t2:, and the crash was inevitable.
Manuela Eanes does an honest and meritable job ... like so many others.
Yet she remains "um pãozinho sem sal", a little saltless bread, with a very very annoying voice ...
Maria Amélia Pitta e Cunha :
There you have a lady. Always so perfect, elegant and polite.
My Mother knew her as she lived closed to her and they often met at Sunday Mass in S.Sebastião da Pedreira.
Her son Paulo Pitta e Cunha was my professor in University and I attended a school language with his son, inevitabely another Paulo.

There is a wonderful article in Majesty Magazine (February 2009) on Princess Michael of Kent. Unfortunately, I do not believe it is available on-line, but that issue can be ordered ( Majesty Magazine - The Quality Royal Magazine).

hehe! JSP, your posts are always interesting. Ok, you have a point about Maria Barroso (President Mário Soares' wife). I don't say the "woman destiles poison" but sometimes she makes me feel really angry. Especially when she call herself the "children protector" when she knows nothing about the stories she talks about...
Anyway, don't forget that she, the republican and socialist lady, is one of Dª Isabel Herédia's best friends...

I am glad we agree. My Mother says the same... she was stunning. Lovely lady.
I didn't know Maria Amélia and Paulo Pitta e Cunha had grandchildren, thanks for saying. How old is Paulo (the younger Paulo) now?
Princess Michael of Kent looked just lovely and so nice. Can't wait to read her book.

D. Duarte homenageado pela Confraria Tripas à Moda do Porto - Portugal - DN
Last Friday, at Palácio da Bolsa (Porto), D. Duarte Pio de Bragança became a member of Confraria Tripas à Moda do Porto (a culinary brotherhood devoted to publicize this typical dish from Porto).
D. Duarte, accompanied by his wife, Isabel de Herédia, was appointed confrere, in the Arab Hall of the Stock Exchange Palace of the city.
The dinner that followed the ceremony assembled more than 500 people, but the Duke and Duchess did not participate in it.

Good to see the dukes so engaged in sponsorship of traditional values in society (Caritas..) and in family; they looks very respectable to a watcher from abroad like me. What about their residence in Sintra? It seems an historical building: some info about it? does the family own other houses?

Hello, Amedea! Please, take a look at the thread about Portuguese Palaces and Residences, to read what's been posted about that

In order to mark the canonization of the Constable Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira (which is going to take place next Sunday, at the Vatican), the Foundation Maria Ulrich, sponsored by the Order of Santa Isabel, has just published a pamphlet that presents his biography to the children.
D. ª Isabel de Bragança spoke about this initiative to Radio Renascença:

Renascença - Música e Informação Dia a Dia
Last Friday, the current head of the House of Bragança, D. Duarte, was interviewed for the morning show of Radio Renascença, to talk about D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.
The Constable, who is canonized this Sunday April 26th, was also the founder of the House of Bragança, the dynasty which would be responsible for the restoration of the independence, in 1640.
During the show, D. Duarte considered the new Saint as a good example not only for his family, but also for the militaries, "by trying to prevent deaths during the war. In the battle of Aljubarrota, only 50 Portuguese men were death and, as soon as the Castilians beat the withdrawal, he ordered the troops to stop the battle. He did not allow them to be persecuted".
