According to Correio da Manhã, the Prince of Beira, Afonso de Santa Maria (now ten years old) is participating today in the traditional Dinner of the Conjurors that celebrates the Restoration of the Portuguese Independence, thus initiating his official activities as member of the royal family and representative figure on service to Portugal and the Monarchy.

The traditional cerimony is taking place today, at 8:00 PM, at the Quinta de Santa Sofia, in São Domingos de Rana. It is planned to start with a speech by D. Duarte, about the December 1st 1640, followed by the speech of the president of the Royal Association of Lisbon. It's a night of sociability, livened up by the voice of the fadist João Braga.

This great dinner has a particular meaning for the Monarchy, since the conjurors were a Portuguese nationalistic group, during the reign of Felipe IV of Spain (Filipe III of Portugal). The group was constituted by 40 men, mostly from the nobility, who prepared the restoration of the national sovereignity and the proclamation of D. João IV. On December 1st 1640, the conjurors invaded the Palace of the Duchess of Mântua and shot Miguel de Vasconcelos, thus proclaiming the new Portuguese king, after 60 years of Iberian Union.

The president of the Monarchic Youths of the Royal Association of Lisbon, Joel Moedas-Miguel, gave yesterday a fencing glove to Afonso de Santa Maria de Bragança, thus symbolizing the availability of the young "musketeers" to support the crownprince, in accordance to the chilvalric spirit.

At ten years old, the eldest son of Dom Duarte Pio (who would be the legitimate king, if Portugal was not a Republic for almost a century) started yesterday his protocolic functions, on active service to the Royal Cause. D. Duarte Pio, in his usual message of December 1st, remembered that he also had started accompanying his father at that same age and that he heard of D. Duarte Nuno an expression that he now wants to transmit to his own children: "I am not monarchic for being a prince, I am monarchic for sure". During the speech, D. Duarte (mentioning a recent poll about a hipotetic iberian union) lamented that "some desperate spirits" had revealed being in favor of this remote hypothesis.

The debut of the Infante took place during the traditional Dinner of the Conjurors, in a restaurant of Carcavelos, with which the Royal Cause celebrates the historical conspirative meeting of João Pinto Ribeiro and his 40 friends, in 1640, when they invaded the palace of the Duchess of Mântua (the representative of the Spanish power in Lisbon), to throw Miguel de Vasconcelos out of the window and proclaim D. João IV as king of Portugal.

This is "the most symbolic date of the national unity", said D. Duarte , before greeting (accompanied by his wife, D.ª Isabel de Herédia, his son, D. Afonso, and his brother, D. Henrique) the members of the Portuguese royal associations, the former-leaders of the PPM and PND, the representatives of the house Van Uden, the Counts of Estarreja, of Portugal and Faria, among other personalities.

From Correio da Manhã:

During the speech of December 1st, which lasted nearly 15 minutes, D. Duarte Pio criticized the Portuguese democracy, which he considers to be "a fraud", because the current law of referendum allows "the Portuguese people to pronounce themselves about a series of subjects, except about the nature of the regime itself". This way, the Duke of Bragança criticised the article 288 b) of the Constitution, which conditions the constitutional revision "to respect the republican form of government". About the referendum on the abortion that is scheduled for Januray, D. Duarte will vote for "no", claiming that "the legalization of the death as a solution for an economic and social problem" is not acceptable.

Day November 30th 2006 will be remembered by D. Afonso as the beginning of his official activities, as Crownprince. Smiling, good-spirited and conscientious of the responsibilities involved in the occasion, the little prince entered the room accompanied by his father, D. Duarte, and hand in hand with his mother, D.ª Isabel de Herédia. D. Afonso de Santa Maria João Miguel Gabriel Rafael Herédia de Bragança was born on March 23rd 1996 and is now ten years old. In school, D. Afonso "is an enthusiastic student of Maritime Biology", as his father explained, considering that "it is a good way of earning one's life" in the future.

D. Afonso received a fencing glove from the hands of the president of the Royal Association of Lisbon's Monarchic Youth (RAL). Joel Moedas Miguel explained the symbology of the act: "Traditionally, the defense of the king was made with a sword. The glove that supports the sword symbolizes the qualities of perseverance and dexterity" that the heir to the throne of Portugal must have present and develop in the course of his life, as a representative of the Portuguese Royal House, both inside the Country and abroad.

D. Duarte supported that, in Democracy, referendums should be as easy to convoke as frequent, and listed as examples the referendums about the construction of a new airport or about the construction of the intercontinental airport in Lisbon or Oporto. In his understanding, politicians believe that the People is not prepared to give its opinion on these subjects.

http://dn.sapo.pt/2006/12/02/nacional/monarquicos_entram_campanha_tomar_po.html

The Royal Cause convoked all the Royal Associations to congregate the 5000 signatures necessary to form a Group of Voting Citizens and thus to have right to have their campaign for the referendum on the abortion aired on mass media. But, in contrast to the generality of the participants, the monarchic movement will not advise a vote for "yes" or "no", but will present the clarifications and arguments for each part of the proposals. The ideia was set during the traditional Dinner of the Conjurors and the justification for this model is simple: "There are monarchists in favor of 'yes' and monarchists in favor of 'not'".

Thanks Elsa for the article.

Here are some pictures of the event: (scanned by me, from Caras magazine)

It's so nice to see how close Dom Afonso is with his parents, especially his mother, Dona Isabel, the Duchess of Bragança.

Thanks for sharing them, Regina! He seems to be a down-to-earth young man... and yes, he's the spitting image Dona Isabel!

It is a bit cliche to say, but how much has Dom Alfonso grown! He looks like a serious young man. Dona Isabel looks good to, always stylish. A pity there isn't a chance on restauration of the monarchy in Portugal, this lovely family would do great.

D. Duarte was interviewed for this week's "Outras Converasas", of Maria João Avillez. The interview was aired tonight, on SIC Notícias.

Semanário published this week an article, analysing the state of the republic. It draws a long analysis of the republic's fragilities and presents the monarchy as an alternative. Mind here that "Semanário" is an ultra conservative paper.

The Third Republic is in crisis. Would the restoration of the monarchy be a solution? Or still should the democracy be strenghtened by the reinforcement of the presidential powers?
[...]
The Third Republic is in crisis... And the environment starts being propitious to somebody say: "That's enough! Enough of this Republic"!... The last of the announcements would be Manuel Alegre, at the presentation of D. Duarte Pio's biography, published by Bertrand: it's time to have the Country pronouncing itself in a referendum about the form of Government: Republic or Monarchy.
[...]
It's a serious biography, very serious actually, half of which consists of a presentation of official documents, proving the legitimacy of the Duke of Bragança as pretender to the throne of Portugal; D. Duarte, whose parents had reconciled the two branches of the Bragança family (the "miguelistas" and the "liberals") and whose marriage to D.ª Isabel de Herédia also reconciled the royal family with the coup-minded aristocracy.
[...]
For the record there is a sign that unites the Republic and D. Duarte, once again: Rocha Vieira, the man behind Cavaco Silva's candidacy to the Presidency of the Republic, whose testimony in the biography of D. Duarte has a crucial relevance.
[...]
The truth is that the image of D. Duarte and of a Democratic Monarchy is making its way, be it through a Christmas book, an interview to Maria João Avillez, or a public appearance of the royal family.

The current Head of the Royal House of Portugal is Dom Duarte (III).
His father, who died in 1976, was Dom Duarte (II). They are named after King Duarte I who reigned 1433-1438.

Ok thanks you Warren.

We really don't have a king. We're a republican country.
D. Duarte is the Head of Royal House of Portugal, but not the king.

The Duke of Bragança, D. Duarte, and the Duchess of Cadaval, D.ª Diana Álvares Pereira de Melo, are visiting today, January 13th, the village of Cadaval, to celebrate the 109th anniversary of this municipality.
Besides, the autarchy is preparing two agreements of Cultural Cooperation and Union: one with the Duchess of Cadaval and another one with the Duke of Bragança.

The Duchy of Cadaval was created in 1648, by King D. João IV, after the restoration of the national sovereignity. The first Cadaval ducal title was granted on the birthday of Infante D. Pedro (who would reign as D. Pedro II), and it was passed through 11 generations. The Dukes of Cadaval were a ramification of the family of the Dukes of the Bragança, the most powerful in Portugal, which has found the 4th Dynasty.

http://www.correiomanha.pt/noticia.asp?id=227511&idCanal=21

Among the commemorations for the 109th anniversary of the Municipality of Cadaval, a gemination agreement between Cadaval and Olivença was agreed. On the occasion, the Duque of Bragança made a polemic suggestion: the creation of "a kind of condominium", where both the King of Spain and the President of the Portuguese Republic would be "simultaneously Heads of State of the autonomous territory of Olivença".

For those who are not familiar with the sensitive issue of Olivença, it’s a kind of Portuguese/Spanish version of the British/Spanish quarrel about Gibraltar.

Olivença is a town on the border of Portugal and Spain that is claimed as Portuguese territory since 1298 (when it was conquered), although the city has been administered as a part of the Spanish Extremadura. Officially, however, the Portuguese government does not recognize the Spanish sovereignty on Olivença and considers it as Portuguese territory “de jure”.

For more information, see the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivenza

The Dukes of Cadaval are the great link between the cities of Cadaval and Olivença, since the 1st Duke of Cadaval, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo (*1638 +1727), simultaneously hold of the Duchy of Cadaval and Alcaidaria-Mor of Olivença.

Such great info everyone. Thanks Elsa M. for all this wonderful information on Portugal's Royal Family.

Does anyone know of books about the Portuguese monarchy in English?
Not many, but here's an interesting one, from 2005:
Empire Adrift: the Portuguese Court in Rio de Janeiro, 1808-1821, by Patrick Wilcken.

It's about the strategic displacement of the Portuguese Royal Court to Rio de Janeiro, during the Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent growth of Rio.

It may be ordered through Amazon:

The celebrations counted as well on the presence of the widower Duchess Claudine and the representatives of the royal associations of Ribatejo and Lisboa.

That journey also included the signature of a cooperation agreement between the municipality of Cadaval and the D. Manuel II Foundation (represented by D. Duarte Pio), the inauguration of the Street of Olivença, or the historical recriation, which was attended in the afternoon by D.ª Diana Pereira de Melo and her fiancé, Prince Charles Philip d'Orléans, Duke of Anjou.

Last Saturday in Santarém, D. Duarte de Bragança and D.ª Isabel Herédia participated in the Lunch of the King, organized by the Royal Association of Ribatejo.

During the speeches, D. Duarte considered that "a People without roots does not have any future and the serious governors know that it is necessary to preserve our identity and culture, our architectural, cultural and environmental patrimony". The heir to the throne supports that the democratic system must look after captivating and clarifying the People, otherwise ordering voices will appear, ultimately ending up with the appearing of a dictatorial regime. The Duke of Bragança also took advantage to support the restoration of the monarchy, to "assure the rights, freedoms and guarantees of the People, through an independent leadership from the economic and politic powers".

Regarding the fact that the commands of the State are not elected, D. Duarte underlines that, in a Parliamentary Monarchy, "the Parliament can dismiss the king and a referendum can put an end to the monarchy; therefore the democracy always prevails, like in Spain or Luxemburg happens".

Isn't this woman one of the actresses who played "Os Távoras" a few years ago?
You're welcome, Juanita!

Yes, Filomena Gonçalves is the wife of Francisco Moita Flores (also in the picture), who, among many other things, is also the President of the Municipality of Santarém (thus their presence at the event) and the author of several scripts. One of those is O Processo dos Távoras / The Távora Trial (2002), directed by Wilson Solon, where Filomena plays one of the characters.
