Pope John Paul II and the Duke of Bragança had several private meetings. In 1998, His Holiness Pope John Paul II received the Duke and Duchess of Bragança, Dom Duarte Pio and Dona Isabel. They introduced him their two children, Afonso and Francisca, and to the surprise of everyone, Afonso rushed forward, asking to kiss the cross hanged on the Pope's neck. John Paul II, unable to lift the boy, bent forward, in spite of his physical difficulties, to allow Afonso to kiss his cross. His Holiness and the Duke and Duchess were deeply moved by this spontaneous gesture of the prince.
Do the Duke of Braganca's brothers play any role in Portuguese cultural activities as representative of the Royal House?
As President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Horsemen (Assembleia dos Cavaleiros Portugueses), and member of some honorific congregations, such as the Sovereign and Militar Order of Malta (Ordem Soberana e Militar de Malta), the Order of St. George (Ordem Constantiniana de S. Jorge), or the Orders of St. Mauricio and St. Lázaro, D. Miguel plays some duties, but in a very discreet way.
Same happens with D. Henrique.
