Infanta D. Maria Adelaide is 100! (Jan 2012); Death on 24 February 2012
HH Infanta Dona Maria Adelaide (1912-2012)
Infanta D. Maria Adelaide celebrates today her 100th birthday.
She is the first Portuguese royal to reach this age, being also the only living grand-daughter of a Portuguese king alive.
This King was of course D.Miguel I, born in 1802, 210 years ago !
The Infanta will receive the Order of Civil Merit by the President of the Republic, for her humanitarian action, in a banquet tonight.
She founded Nun’Álvares Pereira Foundation, dedicated to the more needed, and devoted her life to their help .
The President, for once, had an intelligent gesture, granting her the Order of Merit.
In a note to the Portuguese press agency, he underlined the example of her moral statute, considering her one of the more relevant Portuguese alive.
You don´t have to be front cover on the papers to act as she did.

Happy 100th birthday to Her Royal Highness!
She is also the first centenarian born in a royal family (Duchess Alice of Gloucester and the Queen Mother came from noble families).

Congratulations to the princess! Nice to see the duke attending the birthday of his aunt. But isn't one of her sons supposed to be a rival pretender to the Portuguese throne?

Some monarchists did support her son as opposed to Duarte, but her son never supported this "movement". Now almost all monarchists and non monarchists recognize Duarte as the undisputed head of the Portuguese Royal House.

There was a small rift between D.Duarte and his cousin Francisco van Uden before D.Duarte got married.
Since he was taking so much time to get married and produce a heir, Francisco van Uden pressed the Duke of Bragança to appoint his own son Afonso de Bragança van Uden as his successor and proposed himself to raise him as "the crown-prince" of Portugal.
D.Duarte never indulged to Francisco's pretension and for some time there was a cold climate between the two cousins.
Later, D.Duarte got married to D.Isabel, the couple had their own children and the situation naturally fell down and the cousins buried the differend.
