I don't like the modern gold tiara either. Queen Sonja hasn't worn it very often lately though.

Sonja wore the Large setting of the Queen Maud Pearl & Diamond Tiara tonight. She looks lovely tonight.

Sonja is wearing the emerald tiara tonight. I'm surprised she did as she wore to his last major birthday.

Oh well, it's her standard tiara for big events. I admit, that it is impressive, but I find the diamond tiara more graceful.

It is her most historically significant tiara, not least because it once belonged to Empress Josephine, Napoleon's first wife.

For the 60oth birthday celebrations in 1997 she wore the big Version of the pearl tiara so it would have been nice if she would have worn the diamond tiara thist time but she for some reason she doesn't wear it as often anymore.

Thait is not certain. Only that it once belonged to Empress Amalie of Brazil.. And the diamond tiara's history is equally.

I love the Emerald Parure. I actually prefer it over the Diamond tiara. The only thing i (as a swede) think is sad, is the fact that it once belonged to the swedish royal family but doesn't anymore grrrr hahaha

Here is a pic from a third event of Queen Sonja with the circlet. I don't know which event that was, but you can see that she was younger than on the two other pics above.

An Ard Ri, from what I heard, Queen Sonja had the circumference of the bandeau reduced to make it fit better. Since then, the old way of fitting all five crosses is no longer possible. But I agree, the new way of three crosses in front looks awkward. Certainly that's the reason why the crosses are so rarely worn.
Btw, some years ago someone on the net made us aware that these are not Maltese crosses, but crosses patee.
