A lovely and romantic gesture by Prince Albert, presenting this lovely brooch to his bride. That was the inspiration of course for the tiara, designed in 1842, which has been in the media lately. I wish the tiara had stayed with its beautiful little partner, the Prince Albert brooch, in the main line of the BRF.
I wonder where Albert got the sapphire from? He designed the brooch and had it made in Germany, presumably. He wasn't hanging around Windsor till the wedding day. Perhaps it came from an old family piece in the Saxe-Coburg vaults.

Thank you for those links, IloveCP - it was fascinating to see the jewels worn in the early '50s, and those sapphires worn at the State Banquet are so beautiful!

I don't particularly like the brooch, but I acknowledge its fascination.
