Princess Caroline Jewellery (Monaco and Hanover)

Princess Caroline, IMHO, always wears wonderful jewelry.

Sapphires! From www.corbis.com

Here she wears an interesting ring. I am wondering what the center stone is?
A close-up of the ring...

I wonder if that ring is made of two bigger, cabouchon cut rubies and some smaller two make the point of the heart. And brilliants, of course, lining the whole thing.

And, ladies and gentlemen, see how she can wear the heart on the right direction! (She has impeccable taste for jewelry and wears them great.) I find it so annoying when people who have heart rings, turn the point towards themselves. Yes, yes, I've heard the old legend 'when you are free, the heart points out and when you are engaged, the heart is turned inwards'. Blechh. That makes the heart look like a bottom.

Hi Mia. Here is an extreme close-up of Caroline's ring. I think you may be right...it does look like two cabochon rubies or perhaps a member of the cinnabar family???

And what a relief that Caroline wears the ring in the proper fashion!

I love the earrings and necklace that Caroline wore to the 2001 (?) Red Cross Ball....

Oh, what a pity. I wasn't very impressed of the rest of these photos. The combination of the wing-like brooches and the big earrings with lots of coloured stones wasn't the greatest possible...

Neither was those big diamond earrings and the pendant with the dark stone. A bit unbalanced or something. Hmph, I've seen better pics of Caroline wearing jewelry.

Julia, do you know what tiara Caroline is wearing in the third picture from this post up?
It looks rather pretty, but I don't believe I've seen it before.
Thanks!
T.

Hi Fireweaver,

Actually, I think Caroline is wearing various pendants in her hair to create the illusion of a tiara. :)

interesting look...

I'm not sure if these are the same wings Princess Caroline is wearing as brooches. The black 'stripes' seem to have clearer edges than in the tiara. But they are definitely very close.

From the Albionart.com site

Valkyrie's Wings
The tiara consists of a frame surmounted by a pair of wings, feathers closely set with diamonds, and patches of translucent blue enamel. They are adjustable to any angle and can be taken off the frame to wear as brooches, individually or as a pair. The motif was inspired by the winged helmets worn by the flying Valkyries in the operas of Richard Wagner, which attracted large audiences. To honor the composer, Wagner nights were always "tiara nights" at the Paris and London opera houses. This pair matches the description of the wings entered for stock in 1907 and bought by the Duke of Westminster from Chaumet that year. Wings had a long run: Cartier supplied a pair to the duchess of Roxburghe in 1935, the last of a series that had begun in 1899. Mrs. Diana Scarisbrick

Good eye, Mia! If they are not the wings of the Valkyrie's Tiara shown then they must be a sister design because they look darned close to me!

Hey Josefine, most of the time Caroline wears the diamond and pearl tiara, the one she inherited from her grandmother, princess Charlotte and the fringe tiara, inherited from Princess Charlotte as well although Caroline wears it as a necklace. But.....there must be more, like the Serre-Chignon tiara, the small diamond tiara (which Caroline wore one, at the pre wedding ball, when she married Philippe Junot) and the small ruby tiara. Those all belonged to her mother, Princess Grace.

The Monegasque Royals also borrowed some great jewels and at least one (the diamond tiara Grace wore at the pre wedding ball when Caroline married Philippe Junot, was sold....

Can anyone tell me if the tiara that Caroline is wearing in these pictures is from Monaco or does it belong to the Hanovers?

Also, Does the necklace convert to a tiara and what is its history?

both of the tiaras (the necklace is also a tiara) come from the monaco family. Caroline inherited them directly from her grandmother, who didn't like Princess Grace.

Why did Princess Charlotte didn't like Princess Grace? Was it because in the fifties, royal people's personality were quite different to that of the people who were movie stars?

It can easily be said that Charlotte really didn't like very many people. I doubt that many cared for her either. She didn't like Grace for obvious reasons-Grace had worked for a living and had her own career, she was a celebrity, a commoner, and an actress to name a few reasons. Another reason that Charlotte didn't like her is because when Grace realized that she couldn't win Charlotte over she didn't give a care about it and for the most part was civil but ignored Charlotte. It was a no win situation with her. Grace was not the woman that Charlotte would have chosen for Rainier and for many mothers even some today, that is enough for a mother-in-law to dislike her daughter-in-law. It was a combination of many things.

Being that Charlotte didn't care for Grace, nor Grace for her it was reasonable to suspect that Charlotte would not leave her tiaras or anything substantial to Grace. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Grace was left absolutely nothing at all, not even a brooch.

What made Charlotte so special??

At least Princess Grace's parents were married when she was born!!

Charlotte was adopted by her father when it looked like the Monagasque succession would fail and the principality revert to France.
