Cruise of the Agamemnon 1954
I recall reading about a royal cruise that took place in sometime in the 1960's. I believe it was sponsored by Queen Frederika of Greece and it was for all the young royal blood to mix (Constantine, Irene, Beatrix, Richard, etc.) It was dubbed the royal matchmaking cruise by reporters.
It's such a fun topic because SO many royals were at this gathering and this was before they all got married so they were fresh and young.:p
Someone recently mentioned the cruise on the benelux board and so this is why I ask. It seems as though pictures of this cruise are out there, but difficult to find. Can some very resourceful person on this board find any pictures and information about this cruise???

I believe in both pictures the ladies are Beatrix and her sister Irene.

I think the one where Beatrix is on the cruise is with her sister Irene and some Bulgarian royal. I'll check it out...
Actually the man beside Beatrix in that picture is Alessandro Prince Borghese. I'm not sure where he's from.
(The Bulgarian royals were there too though.)
Can anyone else find information and pictures of this cruise?

According to the collection of royal postcards on the website of the Royal National Dutch Library, the second picture is taken in Porto Ercole, Italy in 1960. And yes, they identify the man in the picture as Alessandro Borghese.

I assume the picture is taken at Juliana & Bernhard's vacation home there since there is also another picture taken on the same day of Beatrix, Irene, Juliana & Bernhard.

I don't know if this information helps any.

I believe so, and it was at this cruise that Beatix said how lovely it was to be amongst her own sort of people, which was blown out of proportion and which is a remark that is still used today to show that she might be a bit haughty.
I believe the Count and Countess of Paris also attended, with their flock, as did the Hessen-Kassel, Baden and Hohenlohe nieces and nephews of the Duke of Edinburgh.

I can't remember if it was the late 80s or early 90s, but yes, there was a young people cruise. Prince Edward was also on it.

The Norwegian king and queen celebrated their silver wedding in great style in 1993, among other things with a cruise along the fjords. Many (single) young royals were present. I remember the prince of Orange sitting next to princess Alexia of Greece in a small carriage. After the wedding some gossip press claimed that Queen Beatrix wanted to set him up with an Ullens de Schooten countess (one of the grand daughters of prince Carl Bernadotte).
Anyway, a link to the TRF thread dedicated to the celebrations:

So probably that is the cruise that you had in mind? The Belgian royals were all absent as the court was still in mourning for king Baudouin.

Wasn't there a cruise (not sure if it's the same one as the Norwegian Silver Wedding) where the media tried to set up Wilem-Alexander with Victoria before realising that they couldn't marry each other or something?

They could marry each other. No problem. One of the two had to give up his/her throne rights.
