Prince Charles of Luxembourg (1927-1977) and Family

I'm curious about Prince Charles of Luxembourg, who died in 1977. Other than mentioning his marriage to the American heiress Joan Dillon, Wikipedia and other resources say very little about him.

What did he do with his life? He seems to have died quite young -- what was the cause?

the cause of his death was cardiac, she died suddently, he left two young chidren . He battled many years for marrying a wife who was married some years ago, I thougth her former husband was amirecan and she had already a girl. I do not know if he lost his titles at the moment of his wegging.

AFAIK, he did not lose his titles (I believe they are of Nassau). He and Princess Joan were present during the state visit to Luxembourg by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands along with Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte.

In addition to her child(ren) from a previous marriage, Charles and Joan were the parents of Prince Robert (who married Julie Ongaro of the US), and Princess Charlotte (who married Marc Victor Cunningham). After Charles' death, Joan again married the heir/owner of the the famous Chateau Haut-Brion winery. Robert is currently the owner(?)/director of the winery as well as managing director of businesses from his Dillon heritage.

When GD Henri issued the proclamations creating his daughter-in-law Tessy as Princess and elevating her children with Prince Louis to Prince/Princess of Nassau, the children of Prince Jean as Prince/Princess de Nassau, he also issued a decree creating Robert's wife, Julie, as Princess of Nassau.

You are right, he did not lose his titles but if I'm not mistaken he renounced his rights to the throne upon marrying Joan who became a Princess of Luxembourg, Charlotte and Robert were born HRH Princess and Prince of Luxembourg. As Stefan already mentioned Julie and their three children became HRH Princes/Princesses of Nassau in 2004. AFAIK the children were raised in Luxembourg and France.

After Charles' death she married Philippe de Noailles, Duc de Mouchy, Prince-Duc de Poix who then worked as managing director of the Domaine Clarence Dillon; together the two bought Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Laville Haut-Brion and Château La Tour Haut-Brion. Robert now works as the manager and lives with his family in France while Charlotte is living in London with her family AFAIK.

Other information about Charles... He was a member of the Council of State for some time and served as President of the Board of Industrial Development. He attained the rank of Colonel of the Army. He succumbed to a heart attack at age 49 while at Villa Reale d'Imbarcati near Florence, Italy. He was laid to rest at the Cathedral Of Our Lady in Luxembourg.

Charles did not loose his succession rights when marrying Joan. Robert did loose his when he married Julie because the marriage was not approbved and Julie and her children became Count/Countess of Nassau.

Thanks for the correction, Stefan! Do you know whether Julie and the children became Count/Countess the day they married / were born? The Grand Ducal family seems pretty inconsistent with the use of names / titles as Princess Tessy just got the surname de Nassau the day she and Prince Louis married and Noah and Gabriel only had the surname de Nassau when they were born and were later upgraded to Princess of Luxembourg / Princes of Nassau.

It seems odd that after Grand Duke Jean granted his approval to Prince Charles's marriage to an American commoner, he did not do the same for Charles's son's marriage to a second American commoner.

They became Countess/Count of Nassau in 1995.

Decree 21 September 1995 concerning royal titles in Luxembourg

Indeed. The decree further mentions that princes and princesses who have married without the approval of the sovereign lose their royal titles, yet the rule was apparently waived to permit all of them to retain their titles.

Is it known whether Charles' great-nephew named his son Charles (partly) in honor of his great-uncle (whom he never met as he passed away before his birth)?

To accelerate research into a mitochondrial disease his son, Prince Frederik, suffers from, Prince Robert of Luxembourg created the PolG Foundation.

I have a memory of reading that one of baby Charles' parents had said so, but now I cannot locate a source for that.

Joan Douglas Dillon, widow of Prince Charles, is still alive. She is currently 88 years old and I don't think she has appeared publicly in many years.
Where does she currently live?
