Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland (1915-2013)

Royal expert Roger Lundgren reminisces princess Lilian at his Instagram
"An old favorite. Together with Princess Lilian, 1997. She became a personal friend. She was incredibly funny and the one who taught me to drink gin and tonic. A good feature"

I did not realize Princes Lillian was 98 when she passed. She was a very beautiful and elegant lady. I loved the way the family always escorted her to functions and she was always there smiling.

Victoria looks just as gorgeous in it as her Aunt Lilian.?

One of the most elegant Royal tiaras I have ever seen.

I love it too, it's Boucheron, if I remember correctly. It can also be worn as a necklace.

Princes Lillian was such an elegant and dignified lady and a wonderful support to king and RF.

Lillian was indeed a much valued member of the Swedish royal family after her long delayed marriage to Prince Bertil.

However, who left the Margaret of Connaught tiara to Lillian? Did it come to her through Bertil being left it by his father King Gustav Adolf for use by his future wife? Or was this tiara just a general part of the Swedish royal collection and by usage it became associated with Lillian, so King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia gave her it after their wedding?

The tiara was left by Margareta to her son Bertil. It was not part of any of the royal foundations.
The death and funeral of Queen Sofia in 1913 made a huge impact on Margareta who was much put off by the centuries old ceremonies surrounding the funeral. She started planning for her own funeral and among other things decided that she wanted to be buried outdoors which, together with plans already set in motion by Prince Carl & Princess Ingeborg and the fact that the Bernadotte crypt in the Riddarholms church was almost full, led to the establishment of the Royal burial site in Haga Park. She also started planning her estate which included the divvying up of her jewellery collection which among many other pieces included 7 tiaras.

Thank you JR. So Bertil was left it by his mother who of course died when he was a young boy. Rather surprising to me. I wonder whether Margaret divided up all her jewellery in that way between her sons and daughter? As several sons married morganatically (and were divorced) I suppose some of the jewellery was later sold.

I've never read Margareta's will, but it's known that she did divvy up her jewellery between her children, yes. Ingrid got two tiaras and much else while Gustav Adolf inherited two other tiaras and other things, Sigvard got a ruby tiara with a necklace of which the tiara now belongs to King Carl Gustav while the necklace was sold. Sigvard's widow has been seen in a demi-parure that it's speculated was the parure left to Margareta by Princess Teresia. The big mystery is what was left to Carl Johan. His wife Kerstin often wore a diamond necklace/tiara that most likely came from his mother as well as a few other pieces. One brooch was given to Victoria as a christening gift. Kerstin also writes in her autobiography about "his mother's sapphires" although I've never understood what she meant by that. But of course both Sigvard and Carl Johan initially fell on hard times after their marriages and were, as you say, forced to sell off parts of their inheritances.

7 tiaras!! I can't tell whether that's a typical amount for a crown princess, but it seems like a lot. Certainly to modern eyes. I suppose it's "lucky" she had jewelry and children in equal measure?

I was just reading in a Finnish interview from 2003 that Lilian freely admitted her Swedish was poor and that she just spoke English to everyone. She must have been very charming indeed to be so universally loved in spite of that.

Was Lillian an only child ?

I've never read anything about the Princess having any siblings.

Lilian had two half sisters on her father's side, Janice Rees & Sonja Roberts, whom she never had formed a relationship with. Neither inherited anything from her estate. After the death of her mother, she was raised by Winifred Mclead, the sister of her stepfather, who later spent large parts of the year with Lilian and Bertil in Stockholm. Lilian was also very close to her cousin Jean Beaumond and her daughter Christine Robinson who both later inherited her. Christine inherited, among other things, Lilian's Mayfair flat while Jean got around 5 million SEK.

I'd forgotten about the Mayfair Apartment and I found this article on the Will and Estate of the late Princess.

Trond Norén Isaksen: The division of Princess Lilian’s estate

:previous: In a question posted below the article, there is mention of a significant amount of jewellery that is unaccounted for. I am in agreement with the person that answered that they were probably part of the Bernadotte collection and returned to the crown on her passing. It is a small thing but makes you realise how dearly she was held in the hearts of all the SRF. Moreso, when you realise that the items specifically mentioned, were her own to give as she saw fit and she honoured both sides of her "family" with those gifts.

The turquoise necklace mentioned has been identified by posters on RJOTWMB to be a custom piece by Mimi Di N.
The brooch mentioned that Lilian wore for her wedding was worn by Queen Silvia for a banquet in 2015.

Although I think it has been posted before here is a link to the jewel inventory of Lilian's estate and a (in parts badly) translated copy of parts of her will.
