A versatile sportswoman
The Crown Prince and Crown Princess happily participated in sporting events. They also provided support to sports clubs and organizations, including the 1912 Olympiad in Stockholm. Their interest in popular sports coincided with the fact that sport became increasingly organized and with an increased understanding of the importance of sport for public health.
The Crown Princess herself practiced a number of sports such as tennis, horse riding and golf. In 1908, she founded Sweden's first female bandy team (then called hockey): Kronprinsessans Hockeyklubb (The Crown Princess' Hockey Club). The team got followers and soon there was a league with six teams who all trained twice a week. In the film, the team plays at Stockholm's stadium, with the Crown Princess as forward and Gustaf Adolf as spectator.

On this day on September 6, 1911 opened a large congress in Stockholm, organized by the International Women's Association. During the following days, current issues such as emigration and voting rights were addressed. The program also included a garden party at Logården at the Royal Palace, where the Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Crown Princess Margareta talked to the congress participants. In June of the same year, the couple was at the Opera when Selma Lagerlöf gave the opening speech for the international suffrage congress, which was also held in Stockholm.
Crown Princess Margareta was a good organizer and had the ability to motivate others. She understood that her social status gave her special opportunities and she actively engaged in many of the greatest societal issues of the time and pursued humanistic efforts for the well-being of children, civil defense building, the rights of the disabled and during the First World War for prisoners of war.

A c.1920 photograph of the Crown Princess Margareta (see previous post) and her youngest son. The photograph, taken not long before the Princess’s death at age 38, was a gift to my grandfather who was the Royal Chaplain at the time. Note the strange ”angel’s wings” in the picture, probably caused by some development flaw.

Darling Daisy
Margaret Victoria Charlotte Augusta Norah of Connaught, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland, was born on Bagshot Park Manor near Windsor on 15 January 1882. She was the daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and Louise Margaret of Prussia. Her grandmother was Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
Princess Margaret, called Daisy and Darling Daisy within the family, had a rather carefree childhood at Bagshot Park where the lush park invited to exciting excursions. As a child, her father the Duke had been encouraged to take part in gardening at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's summer residence on the Isle of Wight, and he transferred his interest to his daughter. Margareta's lifelong interest in sports, music and art was also aroused in the childhood home. In London, the family lived in Clarence House, Prince Charles' current London residence.
Queen Victoria had arranged for her children to marry in the European royal houses. Her grandchildren also had expectations. Love, on the other hand, was not something one could expect. When Princess Margaret met Prince Gustaf Adolf, it was love at first sight. In Sweden she was called Margareta.
The audience success, exhibition "Daisy - Crown Princess Margareta, 1882-1920" is extended until January 9, 2022. The exhibition is shown in the part of the Royal Palace where she lived with Gustaf (VI) Adolf and their five children.

They met in Cairo
In January 1905, the Duke family Connaught embarked on the HMS Essex with the Mediterranean as its destination. Officially, the duke was to inspect troops in Sudan and Egypt, but the trip also included visits to the royal courts in Portugal and Spain, which gave rise to marital rumors.
When the family arrived in Cairo, they attended a ball at the invitation of the Kediv (Viceroy) of Egypt, Abbas Hilmi II. The ball was held at the Abdeen Palace. Here, Princess Margareta met for the first time Prince Gustaf Adolf, who had arrived a week earlier to visit archeological excavations. In a letter to a friend, she revealed that the plan was to reunite her sister with the Swedish prince, but that it was love at first sight. "No one had thought that I would be even a far-fetched alternative, not even him. I stepped on stage and put everyone's plans to an end !! ”
After only meeting a few times, the prince proposed and Margareta said yes. Finding a suitable one in royal circles and also falling in love was not a matter of course and the couple was very grateful. On the way home, they stopped at Capri to meet the prince's mother, Crown Princess Victoria.
The public success "Daisy - Crown Princess Margareta, 1882-1920" lasts until January 9, 2022.

On the theater stage
Growing up, Margareta took with her the tradition of playing theater and dressing up. Theater was seen as a good way to prepare children for a life in public. Crown Princess Margareta painted scenery, sewed costumes and made sure that the ticket proceeds went to charity.

New prize instituted by the Swedish Bandy Association together with The Royal Court
The Swedish Bandy Association establishes, with HM the King and The Royal Court's approval, Crown Princess Margareta's Prize for female bandy player of the year. The prize goes to the player who during the past season has excelled by contributing to team spirit and team building, sporting success and being a role model in Swedish bandy. The prize replaces the previous award Player of the Year Women.
Crown Princess Margareta's name as a tribute to her love of bandy and the further development of the sport in Sweden. The winner is chosen by a jury.
The prize and thus also the historic first recipient of Crown Princess Margareta's Prize for female bandy player of the year 2022 will be announced during week 16.
Princess Margareta was a pioneering royal sportswoman. With enthusiasm she took on the winter sports in her new homeland. In 1908, the Crown Princess founded Sweden's first female bandy team (then called hockey): The Crown Princess's HK. The team got followers and soon there was a league with six teams who all trained twice a week.
Örjan Stål is Team Manager for the Swedish women's national team that recently won World Cup gold and the driving force behind the establishment of the prize.
- It is a great honor for Swedish bandy that we get to institute the prize for this year's female bandy player in the name of Crown Princess Margareta. It means a lot to bandy that our talented female bandy players can be honored with the memory of a historic woman who stood for women and men to have equal rights to sports. I put the question to the court regarding the prize in the name of Crown Princess Margareta and they later announced that the King had gladly approved the request from the Swedish Bandy Association.
- It is fantastic that we have been able to implement this from the idea stage to the fact that now a diploma with royal recognition will be awarded to the absolute top of female players. I got the idea when I saw Princess Christina, Mrs. Magnuson on TV4 when she launched her book about her grandmother Crown Princess Margareta's life. She said that Crown Princess Margareta was a strong woman with great drive for equality and sports. In the early 1900s, it was generally unusual for women to engage in sports and especially team sports.

Historical Winner of The Crown Princess Margareta's Prize
2021/22, Tilda Ström in Villa Lidköping BK, as the first player ever, will receive the award Crown Princess Margareta's Prize for female bandy player of the year.
The prize in Crown Princess Margareta's name is a tribute to the princess's love of bandy and the further development of the sport in Sweden. The newly established prize has been approved by HM the King and the Royal Court.
- With this new prize and with the attention around the women's WC that was in March, it feels as if the women's bandy reaches out in a new and broader way. Only in the years I have played, it feels as if a lot has happened on that front, says Tilda Ström.

Crown Princess Margareta's burial
today a hundred years ago, the royal cemetery was inaugurated by Archbishop Nathan Söderblom. The work began in 1920 under the leadership of Ferdinand Boberg and two years later the cemetery was ready for use. Crown Princess Margareta's coffin, which during these two years stood in a grave chapel created for her in the Stockholm Cathedral, was transferred to Haga on 15 May 1922 and she was buried out in nature, just as she wished.
The royal cemetery is located on the island of Karlsborg in Brunnsviken, by Haga Park. It is open to visit May-August weekends on Thursdays at 13.00–15.00.
The pictures:
1. The entrance to the cemetery from Haga Park. Architect Ferdinand Boberg designed Crown Princess Margareta's tombstone, as well as the bridge and cross that characterize the site. Photo: Alexis Daflos
2. Crown Princess Margaret (1882–1920). Our current King's grandmother was a dynamic and popular crown princess, a forerunner in many areas who came to influence the view of royalty, into our days. Photo from the Bernadotte Library's archive
3. The royals who are buried on Haga have their Seraphim shields erected in a special place in Riddarholmskyrkan, the so-called Haga wall. Crown Princess Margareta's shield is unique because it is not a Seraphim shield. Instead of the chain of the Order of Seraphim around her Coat of Arms, there is a heraldic wreath of daisies.
The relief on the Haga Wall is created by the sculptor Liss Eriksson.

New trophy that will be lifted by the Swedish women's ice hockey champions. Naming the cup after Crown Princess Margareta was a matter of course given her great importance for women's and girls' sports in Sweden, and the honorable name gives the cup a glorious history from the start, says Angelica Lindeberg, league manager SDHL..
