Article 57 [...] 2. The heir apparent or presumptive, from birth or event that makes him such, will have the dignity of Prince of Asturias and other titles traditionally linked to the successor of the Crown of Spain.

It is wrong to say that Felipe became Prince of Asturias in 1977. He became a Prince in 1975, which one can observe from old reports. In another thread you posted a magazine cover from 1976 where he is styled Prince.

https://www.theroyalforums.com/forum...ml#post2295826

The writer of the Wikipedia article clearly confused the year of his inauguration as Prince of Asturias with the year he succeeded to the title.

If he had remained an Infante until his inauguration, as Wikipedia is claiming, it would have been a major breach with Spanish tradition. There is an unbroken tradition that the eldest sons of the Spanish kings are known as Prince, regardless of whether or not they have been inaugurated as Princes of Asturias, of Gerona, and so forth.

If I understand it correctly,
  • Prince of Asturias was originally the titlle held by the heir to the Crown of Castile.
  • Prince of Girona was originally the title held by the heir to the Crown of Aragon.
  • Prince of Viana was the title of the heir of the Kingdom of Navarre.
As far as I understand it too, there is not a clear point in history (like the Acts of Union in England, Scotland and Ireland for example) when the aformentioned Crowns merged to form a unitary Spanish Crown, but most historians place it in the beginning of the Bourbon monarchy between 1707 and 1716.

In any case, it is logical that the heir to the Spanish Crown, being the successor to all of the jurisdictions above, should hold all three titles.

The Prince or Princess of Asturias is also Duke/Duchess of Montblanc, Count/Countess of Cervera, and Lord/Lady of Balaguer.
