King Philip V of Spain (December 19, 1683 - July 9, 1746) or Philippe of Anjou was king of Spain from 1700 to 1724 and 1724 to 1746, the first of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain.
He was the second son of Louis, le Grand Dauphin and Maria Anna of Bavaria. He was a younger brother of Louis, duc de Bourgogne and an uncle of Louis XV of France.
His paternal grandparents were Louis XIV of France and Maria Theresa of Spain. His maternal grandparents were Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria and Adelaide Henriette of Savoy, the daughter of Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy.
Philip was born at Versailles. He was made the Duke of Anjou upon his birth. He was the second son of Louis, le Grand Dauphin. In the year 1700, the King of Spain, Charles II, died. Charles' will named the 17-year old Philip, the grandson of Charles' sister Maria Theresa of Spain, as his successor. Upon any possible refusal the Crown of Spain would be offered next to Philip's younger brother Charles, duke of Berry, or to Archduke Charles of Austria. Both claimants had a legal right due to the fact that Philip's grandfather, King Louis XIV of France and Charles's father, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold, were both the husbands of Charles' older half sisters and sons of Charles' aunts. Philip had the better claim because his grandmother and great-grandmother were older than Leopold's. However the Austrian branch claimed that Philip's grandmother had renounced the Spanish throne for her descendants as part of her marriage contract. This was countered by the French branch's claim that it was on the basis of a dowry that had never been paid.
After a long council meeting where the Dauphin spoke up in favor of his son's rights, it was agreed that Philip would ascend the throne but would forever renounce his claim to the throne of France for himself and his descendants. It was not difficult to see whether Louis would have refused anyway as a Habsburg ruler in Spain would have put a possible enemy on three frontiers.

Maria Luisa of Savoy (September 17, 1688 - February 14, 1714) was the first wife of king Philip V of Spain.
She was the third daughter of Victor Amadeus II of Savoy (1666 - 1732), Duke of Savoy and future king of Sicily and Sardinia , and his wife Anne Marie of Orléans, daughter of Philippe I of Orléans and Henrietta Anne Stuart.
Her older sister Marie Adelaide married 1697 Louis, duc de Bourgogne and was the mother of Louis XV of France.
On November 2, 1701 Maria Louisa , just under 13 years old , married the younger brother of her brother-in-law, Philip, duc d'Anjou who had just become king Philip V of Spain .
In 1702 the long and ruinous War of Spanish Succession broke out. Maria Louisa proved to have what it takes to be a great queen by making herself admired in Madrid. She also started to impose some order in the junta, and led by her example at least some individuals and cities to start supporting the government with troops and money.

Elizabeth Farnese (October 22, 1692 – July 11, 1766), Queen consort of Spain, also known as Isabel de Farnesio or Isabella Farnese, was the only daughter of Odoardo II Farnese. Her paternal grandparents were Ranuccio II Farnese, Duke of Parma and Isabella of Modena.
Her mother educated her in strict seclusion, but seclusion altogether failed to tame her imperious and ambitious temper. At the age of twenty-one (1714) she was married by proxy at Parma to Philip V of Spain. The marriage was arranged by Cardinal Alberoni, with the concurrence of the Princesse des Ursins, the Camarera Mayor.
On arriving at the borders of Spain, Elizabeth was met by the Princesse des Ursins, but received her sternly, and, perhaps in accordance with a plan previously concerted with the king, at once ordered her to be removed from her presence and from Spain. Elizabeth quickly obtained complete influence over Philip V, who was considered a weak king. This influence was exerted altogether in support of the policy of Alberoni, one chief aim of which was to recover the ancient Italian possessions of Spain, and which actually resulted in the seizure of Sardinia and Sicily. So vigorously did she enter into this policy that, when the French forces advanced to the Pyrenees, she placed herself at the head of one division of the Spanish army.
But Elizabeth's ambition was grievously disappointed. The Triple Alliance thwarted her plans, and at length in 1720 the allies made the banishment of Alberoni a condition of peace. Sicily also had to be evacuated. And finally, all her entreaties failed to prevent the abdication of Philip, who in 1724 gave up the throne to his heir, and retired to the palace of La Granja. (Also in 1724, she acquired the San Ildefonso Group for him from the Odescalchi family.)

Elizabeth Farnese dutchess of Parma & Phillip V
Can anyone shed light on the actual wedding date(s) for King Philip and Elizabeth?
Most internet references use the date of 24 December 1714 as their marriage by proxy.
Somewhere on this forum I read that the marriage by proxy date was 16 September 1714 and the ceremony in person was 14 December 1714.
Also there is a story (backed by archival documentation) about the "queen's jewels." Supposedly Elizabeth demanded a large dowry of exquisite jewelry before she would consummate her marriage. Word was sent to the New World and 8 chests of jewels were supposed to arrive with the inbound treasure fleet that left Havana in July 1715. (again, there is documentation that chests of gifts for the new Queen were aboard this fleet) However, the entire fleet was wrecked along the east coast of Florida.
Philip and Elizabeth's first child was born in Jan of 1716 which means the conception took place around April 1715. This date was before the fleet was even scheduled to depart! Why would she consummate the marriage without receiving the dowry first?
Any information on this story or where to further research it would be appreciated!

Accordig to the Paul Theroff's accurate genealogy of the Spanish Royal Family, they married by proxy on 16 Sep 1714 and in person on 24 Dec 1714.

It was interesting to learn that Elizabeth, upon her entrance to Spain, refused to part with her Italian retinue in exchange with a Spanish one, as had originally been planned.
That was one determined Queen Consort!!

Yes, that July 9, 275 years ago, Felipe V, a good king, passed away. And very deteriorated physically and psychically.

His mother,Maria Anna Victoria de Bavière ,Dauphine of France never lived to see him become king and died in 1690 and was styled Duc d'Anjou prior to that.

Maria Louise Gabriella de Savoia was also Regent of Spain from 1702 to 1703 and during the War of the Spanish Succession.
