Unless you have taken the pictures yourself, or they are not copyright protected, or you have the written permission of the copyright owner to post them here, you cannot post them directly to the Forums. See post #49 a few posts above for more detail.

Thank you for letting me know, Warren. I read the post #49. I understand why now. I am going to try to use the www.tinypic.com to see if it works.

Hi LGates! On the blue bar at the top of the page, you have something called "User CP". Click on that one. Now, on the left hand side there's the control panel. There you can upload a profile picture or an avatar. Hope that helps

You are right about that Burzg! Avatars that have been uploaded with the picture hosting site tinypic.com
lose the original quality they've had after quite a short time. To avoid that it may be better to either use
another picture hosting site or to attach the created avatars to the forums, just as many of our members
are already doing it.

Post #1 of this thread gives a rundown of the rules governing picture posting in the Forums.
If there is something that requires clarification, please don't hesitate to ask.

Recently I have been having trouble with certain links. Say for example if I wanted to post a picture of St Edward's Crown like this, it always says 'bad request, invalid host name'. Does anyone know what's happening? Thanks!

Firstly, the link you have given takes me to a webpage which is suspect and has no relation to St Edward's Crown.
Secondly, you need to advise how you were trying to post the image.
For example...
♦ Have you stored it in an image-hosting site and tried to copy and paste the appropriate linking code?
♦ Were you trying to hotlink the image? (this is bad internet etiquette and not allowed here at TRF)
♦ Did you store the image on your computer and try to attach it to your post as a thumbnail?
and...
♦ Is the photograph you want to post subject to copyright?
.

The link is from an image on Wikipedia's page about St Edward's Crown.
Firstly, I haven't uploaded the image onto a hosting site. I do believe that it has a copyright under the Creative Commons 3.0 Unported license. I wasn't trying to hotlink the image, but if I had, please let me know, as I don't mean to do anything wrong! Also, I haven't stored the image on my computer.

So that's what you didn't do.
How about you state what you did do when attempting to post the picture?

I went to the top of the page, copied the link, and then went to the 'add link button' and pasted it in my reply.
Actually, I think I know what I'm doing wrong now, thanks for helping Warren!

To link to a webpage: copy and paste the page's url directly into your post.
The Wikipedia entry on St Edward's Crown shows a photo of a replica.
The real deal can be found on the website of the Royal Collection at this page:
St Edward's Crown | The Royal Collection
Those photographs are Crown Copyright and therefore should not be directly posted or hotlinked to the Forums.
If you wish to link to a photo, first copy it to your computer and from there copy it to one of the free image-hosting sites.
Then copy and paste the relevant url link directly into your post.
In this manner you are providing members with the link to an image which has been stored on a hosting site; as the image is not hosted on the Forum's servers there is no copyright issue in regard to the Forums.
If you want to post a copyright-free image, you can do so either as a thumbnail direct from your computer (scroll down to 'Attach Files' > 'Manage Attachments') or as a display link to the photo that you have uploaded to an image-hosting site.

I was wondering why on a forum like The Fashion Spot you can attach pictures (with source ref.) and here only use a link. Do other regulations apply to them?
I think it's such a pity that older threads have so many broken links and older pics 'get lost' like this.

I believe it's mostly done for copyright reasons; photos agencies are less-than-happy when their pictures are used without their permission.
You can read more about picture posting rules here - COPYRIGHT FAQ.
You can still attach a picture here as well, provided:
- It's cropped or resized (less than 20% of the original) not to break copyright rules
- Its copyright has expired (typically, 75+ years old pictures are in public domain)
- You hold copyright of the picture or post it with a permission
Just in case you, or anyone else, are unsure how to actually attach files, I've added a step-by-step tutorial for your convenience.
1. Click on the " Attachments" icon on the instrument panel or the " Manage Attachments" in the Additional Options below (both circled in red).
2. A pop-up window will appear. Click on the " Browse" button (circled in red).
3. Another window will appear. Browse and choose the picture you want to attach, then click open.
4. Once the picture is (or pictures are) chosen, click on the " Upload" button (circled in red).
5. You will see the attached file or files in the " Manage Attachments" section (circled in red). if you have attached all the pictures you wanted, click "Submit Reply".

As Artemisia has stated, it is for copyright reasons.
TRF is a very large Forum and as such has been targeted by both photo agencies and professional photographers in demands that their directly-posted copyrighted images be removed. They have every right to do so of course as they have the law on their side. At least two popular royal-related websites were effectively shut down and some individuals (including members of TRF who had started their own blogs) were threatened with serious legal action regarding breach of copyright. Such threats are not to be taken lightly.
To pre-empt any further unpleasantness (and to show good faith with the agencies), stricter picture-posting regulations were put in place which continue to ensure that TRF complies with copyright law and that the rights of copyright holders are protected and upheld.

If you have already uploaded pictures to Photobucket, removing them from your computer will have no effect on the pictures stored online: the links will remain intact.
However, remember that if you remove the pictures from your Photobucket Album, you will lose them forever since there won't be back up copies on your computer.
