Yogayakarta ( Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta ) is one of the provinces of Republic of Indonesia, which has a special status because of the past history.

The king or called as "Sultan" by the locals, governs the province since 1998. The present Sultan: Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X was crowned in March 1989.

Republic of Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands. During the Dutch colonial, few of them were governed by Kings (which the locals call "Raja" or "Sultan").

After the independence day of the country, the existence of some sultanates were abolished. They did not want to exist separately, but chose to be united in the Republic of Indonesia .

Royal conflict in Surakarta shows no signs of cooling down

The unseemly succession dispute that has plagued the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace in Surakarta since last year is showing no sign of cooling down.

The conflict, which was sparked by the failure of Surakarta Sultan Pakoeboewono XII, who died on June 11 last year, to name a successor, pits two rival princes -- His Highness Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Haryo Hangabehi and His Highness Tedjowulan -- against each other, with each claiming to be the rightful head of the princely house.
