Nepal King calls for general elections
Friday, April 14, 2006 (Kathmandu):
Nepal's King Gyanendra has promised general elections in the Himalayan kingdom next year.
The move is being seen as the first step towards restoring democracy in a country that has witnessed nothing but violence over the last year.
It is also being considered a victory of sorts for students, activists and the seven-party opposition alliance in the country that has been fighting for democracy.

Nepal's Monarchy in Crisis
Boy for girl in royal tragedy
April 13, 2006
Poornima Joshi ...Devyani Rana, whose name must figure in any mention of the Kathmandu palace massacre, is ready to get married.
...Five years after Crown Prince Dipendra, said to be driven by love for Devyani, killed the king and queen and five other members of his family in an incident that shocked the world...
...Devyani, who belongs to the Rana clan that ruled Nepal till 1951, also has Congress connections. The late Madhavrao Scindia was her mother Usharaje’s younger brother.

Nepal parties reject king's offer
Nepal's main political parties have rejected an offer by King Gyanendra to participate in talks which the king says could pave the way for elections.
Nepalis describe protest chaos
Violent clashes between police and anti-monarchy protesters are continuing across Nepal as thousands of people defy the curfew.
King Gyanendra, it's time to bow down
By Dhruba Adhikary
...King Gyanedra, who ascended the throne in the aftermath of a mysterious palace bloodbath in June 2001, which took the life of Birendra, initially said that he wanted to play a "constructive role" in the political sphere.
After a coup attempt 14 months ago, he unveiled a roadmap he said would put Nepal on track to democracy in three years. His subsequent steps, however, went in the opposite direction, and his ambition to appear to be the head of a powerful monarchy led him to where he is now.
The formation of an all-party interim government would be a good start.

Quite the serious issue.
If HM the King cannot come to be seen as a uniting figure instead of the power hungry autocrat, then another coup d'état shall no doubt be viewed as the likely & only alternative, in which case the Nepalese monarchy may, some time very soon, find itself associating greatly with its deposed counterparts.
And considering the last overthrow from constitutional to absolutism was executed in 2005...Its looking pretty gloomy.

I sincerely the monarch would seriously consider & do what's best for the people, not himself. The Nepalese people has suffered enough from his regime.
ps. i hope i'm not too political, but this is as far as i could comment..

Unfortunately, the current monarch and his heir both seem to have very little concern for anything beyond their own agenda. If the monarchy in Nepal fails, it could be because there is no one suitable who can command the respect and admiration of the people (like King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother were able to do in England).

Nepal's king caves in to opposition and calls for new prime minister
KATHMANDU (AFP) - Nepal's King Gyanendra caved in after two weeks of pro-democracy protests and asked the opposition to name a new prime minister in a speech to the nation
"We return the executive power of the country to the people," he said on state-owned Nepal televison on Friday.
"We request the seven-party alliance to recommend a name for the post of prime minister who will have the responsibility to run the government."

King Gyanendra, right, swears in Girija Prasad Koirala, left, as prime minister during a ceremony at Narayanhiti Royal Palace in Kathmandu on Sunday, April 30, 2006. Koirala, president of Nepal's Congress Party, will lead a new all party government which is expected to resolve Nepal's ongoing political crisis
