On Friday, April 17, at the initiative of HM Queen, a virtual conference was held for a number of children's rights organizations on the occasion of the covid-19 pandemic.
Among the participants were both international and Swedish organizations and authorities, which are part of the network formed in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Children's Convention 2009.
The purpose of the virtual conference was to give the participants a comprehensive picture of what efforts are being made to meet the special needs of children and young people in the current circumstances.
The Queen opened the conference (from Stenhammar Castle):
“In the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, many children are exposed. I hope that today's meeting will give us a common picture of what is being done to support and protect these children - and perhaps also an idea of what needs to be done going forward.”
The conference was then led by Malin Dahlberg Markstedt from Rädda Barnen (Save the Children).
Participants submitted progress reports from their respective organizations and outlined the consequences that the pandemic has had, and risk having, for children and young people. Many highlighted isolation, financial turmoil and more unsupervised time on the internet as risk factors for violence, sexual abuse and mental and physical ill health. This is especially true in cases where schools and other social contexts are no longer available - which in itself has led to a noticeably increased need for support and assistance from non-profit actors.
All participants shared the picture that the risks are greatest for the children who are already living in social or economic vulnerability.
The Queen thanked the participants for valuable contributions to the conference and expressed the hope that the meeting could be a starting point for new collaborations.

Court website:
The Queen writes today from Stenhammar Castle a letter to the elderly of Sweden, their relatives and staff in the elderly care. Here you can read the letter as a whole and print it.
The queen writes among other things:
In the pandemic that is now affecting the world, and which is changing so many lives, I think in particular of all of you elderly and dementia sufferers who are in an extra vulnerable position.
Similarly, with gratitude to all those working in the elderly care and dementia care, I think of taking care of our old people and helping them feel safe - sometimes under very demanding circumstances. Your efforts are invaluable.
From my own experience, I also know how challenging it can be as a relative of a person with dementia; how much worry and frustration one can feel. At present, your situation is perhaps more difficult than ever.
You are many who now have a hard time, and who deserve our appreciation and compassion. In this strained situation, I would like to send you my warmest regards.

Part of queen Silvia's speech yesterday

The royal court at its website:
On Wednesday, May 6, the Queen participated in the webinar "Online safety and security during COVID19", organized by the UN and ITU (International Telecommunication Union).
In an introductory speech, the Queen highlighted the importance of the shared responsibility to protect children from threats and violence on the Internet, as well as how the already exposed children's insecurity has increased as a result of the new corona virus.
"The virus knows no borders. And online perpetrators respect no borders. Therefore, we need to work together across borders. Making sure that the recommendations that have been developed are turned into concrete action is one very good way to start."
The webinar was the fourth in the series "Digital Cooperation during COVID19 and beyond" and was hosted by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy and ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

The queen's whole speech, she started it
It is a true pleasure to join this digital conversation about a topic that is close to my heart. Online meetings are still fairly new to me, but I am quickly getting adjusted to new ways of handling life – as we all are in these unusual times.

One more award for queen Silvia, she receives Kvinnoorganisationerna Samarbetsråd i Alkohol- och Narkotikafrågor (Women's Organisations Committee on Alcohol and Drug Issues) Fjärilspris at a digital ceremony on Monday 31st August. WOCAD's annual meeting in 2005 decided to establish Fjärilspriset as an annual award instead of continuing to nominate honorary members. Fjärilspriset is awarded to a woman who has shown courage and commitment to alcohol, drug and drug issues from a women's perspective based on WOCAD's statutes. Fjärilspriset is a silver piece of jewelery that has been developed by a designer with a master's degree in jewelery art, Annika Åkerfelt.

And today queen Silvia received the award.

On Monday 31 August, the Queen attended the digitally at the annual meeting of Kvinnoorganisationerna Samarbetsråd i Alkohol- och Narkotikafrågor (Women's Organisations Committee on Alcohol and Drug Issues). In connection with the annual meeting, the Queen received KSAN's "Fjärilspriset" (Butterfly Prize).
During the digital annual meeting, which brought together representatives from, among others, women's unions, the women's emergency movement, the medical profession and more, the Queen gave a speech in which she said, among other things:
"Today's young people face great challenges. Mental illness is increasing. Drugs and alcohol can be a dangerous consolation. The police also report that drug use among our young people is increasing during the corona pandemic. These are reports that we must take very seriously.
Working on these issues requires time, patience, and perhaps most importantly: cooperation. That's why it feels especially good to receive this award from an organization that works as broadly and long-term as you do."
The Butterfly Prize
In connection with the digital annual meeting, the Queen received the "Butterfly Prize 2020".
The motivation, which was read out by chair Lena Josefsson, was:
This year's Butterfly Prize is awarded to HM Queen Silvia for her many years of work and personal commitment to the drug issue and for children's right to a drug-free upbringing. The Queen's commitment to exploited children is innovative and has given the issues increased attention.
Through her interest in substance abuse issues, HM Queen Silvia has raised the issue of addiction both nationally and internationally.
Thanks to the Queen's knowledge and efforts to influence attitudes, new opportunities to improve public health have been opened up. The Queen remains a source of inspiration and support for girls and women of all ages, with different social backgrounds. HM Queen Silvia contributes to a society where health and care are in focus."
