King Carl XVI Gustaf's 70th Birthday Celebrations: April 25-30, 2016

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
There is nothing on the Dutch royal calender for the last days of April, so I suspect WA ad Máxima will go, perhaps together with Beatrix. Queen Juliana also went to the big birthdays of king Carl Gustav after her abdication.

I think Princess Beatrix (godmother of Princess Victoria), King Willem-Alexander (godfather of Princess Estelle), Queen Máxima and maybe Princess Catharina-Amalia (goddaughter and bridesgirl of Princess Victoria) will attend.

:flowers:

No more funny than seeing Carl Gustav and Silvia together after everything that has come to light about their marriage.

Wich has never been confirmed. Everything was just rumours.

It will be funny to see these two walking together like an old couple, after everything that has come to light about this marriage. Is this the first outing together after the abdication?

That is thinking that Sofia was not fully aware of what her husband had done, for years. She comes from the generation of royal women who turned a blind eye (and were raised to) when their husbands had affairs. I find it very unlikely that these were shocking revelations to anyone but the public. The couple has seemed happy enough when they have appeared in public since abdication.

This evening's seminar "En afton om Östersjön – hoppfullhet och hot" (An Evening about The Baltic Sea - Hopefulness and Threats) arranged by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Society of Naval Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, is filmed for a later broadcast at Kunskapskanalen -channel and at the web at UR Play and Dramatenplay.se.
The seminar is estimated to last 3 hours 15 minutes with a break.

The court just updated their calendar. The king and queen have been listed to attend at this evening's Baltic Sea seminar. Now prince Daniel and prince Carl Philip were added to attend at the seminar too.

Johan T Lindwall has contacted Margareta Thorgren about if the children attend at the celebrations (Estelle made her public debut at the king's birthday in 2012).
Will the king's 70th birthday - grandfather's big day be a debut for Oscar?
- There is nothing we communicate in advance or have information about, says Margareta Thorgren.
But are you planning for the little prince to be included on the official celebration in the courtyard?
- There is enough time in cases where such a decision is taken, says Thorgren.
That the very last little prince - Alexander - would make his debut on the king's birthday appears to be in principle unreasonable.
- We have no information about that either, says Thorgren.
But we can count with Princess Estelle, Princess Leonore and Prince Nicolas. They have previously been involved in such official occasions. In all cases, the princesses start getting real habit to take over the show on grandpa's birthday party. In all cases Estelle ...
Party all week and a number of things that take place to celebrate the king. But the big party is on Saturday and it is in the evening at the Royal Palace. Since it is highly private and no cameras allowed inside the premises.
- It is private and it is also where the birthday speeches are held, says Margareta Thorgren.

Aftonbladet writes about the birthday week, the celebrations start today.
The bill for the festivities becomes official next year.
- We have no estimate we go out with. Certainly there are plans we work for but there is nothing we go out with, says Jan Lindman, treasurer at the court.
According to the court Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's wedding cost around SEK 17 million, while Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill's wedding went off at about 10 million. The price tag for Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia's wedding is not yet known but will be published shortly, when the court will present the annual report for 2015.
The celebration for the king is expected to cost less.
- We believe that this will be more restrained than a wedding, says Jan Lindman.
So it is more expensive to arrange a royal wedding than a 70-year celebration for the King?
- Yes. In this context, we always make an assessment of what are official costs, ie the costs included in the King's task and what might be private costs.
This week's major feast days are Friday and Saturday.
- On Friday, an event is held for the official Sweden at the Nordic Museum, which primarily will be considered an official event. The banquet on Saturday will increasingly become a private issue, says Lindman.
Also the police has costs of the king's birthday.
- We have known for a long time that the king turns 70 years and therefore we have been able to plan. We know for example that it will take some escorts and then we plan working hours for it, says Kjell Lindgren, spokesperson at Stockholm police.
- If something unknown happens, it can cause additional costs, but my assessment is that the additional costs should not be so great, he says.
For the City of Stockholm the price tag is at least SEK 150 000, the city decided to give the king a choral tribute as a present.
Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's wedding in 2010
Total cost of SEK 17 million.
The grant: SEK 10 million (This was an additional allocation from the state).
Private costs: SEK 7 million.
Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill's wedding in 2013
Total cost of SEK 10 million.
The grant: SEK 4 million.
Private costs: SEK 6 million.

When I read through all this I am thinking, what will be done when CG will celebrate his 75th or 80th birthday. Wow, the nordic RF's really know how to celebrate.

The court has updated their calendar: Sofia's name has been taken away from the participants on Friday evening's concert, Saturday's lunch at the City Hall and the banquet at the Royal Palace.
According to the calendar she will attend on Saturday at Te Deum, the celebration at the Courtyard and at the Choral Tribute.

Article about the seminar at the court website, the king said at his thank you speech:
"As you may be aware, I have been involved in various issues relating to the Baltic Sea for many years. It is therefore a great honour and a pleasure that this evening's performance to mark my birthday should be about the Baltic Sea. The performance has shown us what our inland sea has meant for commerce and politics, for science and the arts, and for people and the environment, both in Sweden and in our neighbouring countries.
"The Baltic Sea has largely shaped our nation into what it is today. And we are now all involved in shaping its future. This is a great responsibility."

As Sofia gave birth only a week ago, then its understandable that there will be some changes on her schedule.

Expressen has asked from Margareta Thorgren about the security.
The news that seven to eight IS terrorists have entered in Sweden comes in the middle of the preparations for the king's 70th anniversary at the Royal Palace on Saturday.
The court is secretive about the safety measures to be taken now before the grand celebration.
What information has the court got on this?
- You can turn to the police with the questions. We don't comment on security issues in general or the information, says Margareta Thorgren.
Have any kind of additional measures been taken on the king's birthday?
- It is always so that there is a security protection. It is the police who makes the assessments. There is always a security protection around the royal family.
But there are some extra precautions?
- There is nothing I can comment, says Thorgren.
The birthday celebrations began on Monday evening at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in central Stockholm.
The performance was guarded with a massive police group. First arrived three buses with uniformed police officers who checked that there were no parked cars close to the theater, where the Royal couple and the princes were to arrive. One hour before arrival there were also many civilian police officers on the spot.
It is not clear whether the large amount of polices had a connection with the current data on an IS-threat to Sweden. The policemen Express talked with didn't want to give the reason for the increased police coverage. Ann-Christine Jernberg from the court had no information about it either.
The King continues his celebrations on Tuesday evening at a concert at the Royal Chapel. According to the court only the king and queen will attend.
Thorgren is very secretive about if the security has now been tightened around the royal family after the alarm about the IS terrorists:
- We don't comment on security issues, she says shortly.

Royals might not be the targets for the ISIS people that have come to Sweden. But on Saturday there is probably a lot of civilians at the surroundings of the Royal Palace and at the procession route to see the Royal Family.

We will see if there will be even more people than in September 2013

Of course there would be an uptick in security - a week long celebrations of the king's birthday with crowned & elected heads attending. With ISIS infiltrating Sweden all the more reason.

There is, as you've said, always increased security when there's a gathering of politicians, royalty or other celebrities. I'm sure the police has a close eye on this no matter what.

But I wouldn't say that ISIS is "infiltrating Sweden". There are intelligence information about possible terrorist plans, yes. But they are very specific, talking about 7-8 people might have come here to carry out attacs. Not that ISIS in general is taking over Sweden. And there is also talk about targeting civilians - that would mean the high profile royalty (and similar groups) aren't their targets anyway.

All in all, I'm sure that the police is doing as much as they can to keep us safe, not just here in Sweden. A free and open society is always vulnerable, but that's also the price you pay for being a free and open society.

Oh yeah, these royals don't fool around. When it comes to putting on a party, they know how to do it the right way.

The media has now seen the King's interview in SVT made by Claes Elfsberg, it will be shown on TV tomorrow.
King_ 'It's hard to work when you're being ridiculed' - The Local

Expressen writes about that the royals couldn't marry commoners without losing their title.
The king says:
- I had the opportunity. To change it. I do not think it's so strange that these things change. So it was at the time. People knew the conditions. For Prince Bertil it was very difficult. Was loyal to his calling. Then married when I as king could give my consent.
That Victoria, Carl Philip and Madeleine could choose their life's great loves and marry - even though they weren't royal the king says:
- That was nice for them! Find the one that they want to live together and create something with a good cooperation for the future. I think it feels more confident. I did the same thing. Thankful that there was a change.
The king says he sometimes gets both angry and sad over the reporting about him or others in the family.
- In the past, it was written just a little bit in the newspapers. It was okay, it was written and then the magazine disappeared. But today it is taken up by all the bloggers and run around a number of laps. They are not going in and look at the background and put things in a larger context, they have just read some strange statement and exploit it. Then they built only to that. It is really dangerous, I think, he says in SVT interview.

A survey made by Novus for TT about should the king abdicate:
Now is the time for the king to step down from the throne. That believes four out of ten Swedes, which is more than when the king celebrated his 65th birthday.
The king said in an interview with TT for his birthday that he has no plans to retire within the next few years. And he doesn't feel old.
A new survey made by Novus on behalf of TT, however, shows that there are more Swedes than before who think it is time for the King to take a step back.
Four out of ten now believe it is time for the Crown Princess to take over. According to a Sifo survey conducted on behalf of SVT one year before the King's 65th birthday only a third thought that the king should retire in favor of the Crown Princess. In the same survey, support for the king to remain on the throne was 50 %. The new Novus survey shows that about 40 % want the king to remain. 20 % do not know what they think.
Support for Victoria to the throne is greatest among women and among those with the lowest education level.
- The Crown Princess and the Crown Princess couple are immensely popular. She has a charisma that is a bit out of the ordinary and perhaps reaches out in a different manner than the King does, Patrik Åkesson, president of the Royalist Association, says as a possible explanation.
It is unusual that the royals abdicate. But in recent years it has happened in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain, in the latter two cases due to illness. The Netherlands has a tradition of ruler handing over to a younger successor.
- Maybe this is something that people generally have in mind when they answer to this type of question, says Patrik Åkesson.

The king saying "If you are always being a little bit ridiculed in the media it is very hard to work. I have worked as hard as my ability and strength have allowed" at his interview with Claes Elfsberg has been highlighted in many articles.

Karin Lennmor, the editor-in-chief of Svensk Damtidning, says that she doesn't agree with that the journalists deliberately try to mock the king.
- I don't think it is so. Sure, there have been quotes and shown videos where the King expresses himself oddly, that can be perceived as ridiculous. But given what he says and how he acts, there is a lot more to make a fool of. I think rather that the media is very moderate.
Reporter Bengt Hansell from Sveriges Radio's Ekot doesn't think that there is disrespect journalism of the king.
- I don't recognize that. Sometimes the king has of course been criticized, but it belongs to the job.
The king spoke about his dyslexia with Hansell 20 years ago. He told that he never received media training at a young age, something he lacked in retrospect.
Hansell thinks the public appearances that went wrong have etched.
- I remember only two occasions reporting felt a little mocking: one of the first times that the king made an official event and would write this name on a mining wall in Falun, and it was not quite correct spelled. And when he began his speech in Arboga "Kära örebroare". It is possible that it left deep scars.
The King also makes an outcome against what he calls "blogs". He complains how the bloggers pull quotes out of context and make up false stories about the family. "The danger with the information society", the king says.
- I know no specific bloggers who are mean to the king. With "blogs" I think he means social media in general, and it is of course impossible to have control over what is written there. I can understand that he might get hurt. But the king is the king, he has to put up with some, says Lennmor.

Expresssen about Claes Elfsberg's interview "Ensamt majestät" which will be broadcasted on SVT1 this evening:

In the interview the king says that he has helped the government several times
SVT has published a small clip from the documentary, where the king tells that he was with and solved the difficult situation in Saudi Arabia.
It is known that the government and the king talked about the crisis and that King Carl Gustaf sent a letter to the Saudi king.
The king at the interview:
- There are things that you do not talk so much about. But if they ask me to make an effort or service, of course I set up. It was great that I could help and solve a small problem that existed then.
At the same time the king tells that it is not the first time that he has helped the government in sensitive questions:
- It has happened a few times. But it is obvious, that it's very fun that you feel you can help in such difficult questions and that you have confidence, it is what it's all built on - relationships and contacts. That's why state visits are made. They open up contacts so that afterwards one can actually write a little letter.
The king does not want to go into more detail when he has helped the government.
- That I do not talk about. All these things should not be discussed, that's what happens in silence. If one discusses about those it will not work. Quiet diplomacy is the only thing to use is when it comes to these things.

The king has given an interview to Bengt Hansell from Sveriges Radio. It is a very extensive interview, the king speaks about his years as a king, prince Bertil's loyalty to Sweden and the royal house, his children marrying for love, order of succession and freedom of religion, the confidence people have in the royal house, work for children, terrorism, Victoria's family living in Haga and about that Victoria will be the queen in same day.
Some things the king said:
- Actually, I would perhaps like to travel more often in Sweden. But unfortunately it is very much this kind of business "in the house", very ordinary office job in any way. There are a lot of meetings, we prepare every trip and visit, it is surprising how much time goes to that kind of things.
About that to be in the order of succession one must be baptized
- I heard someone in the Swedish Church (Bishop Caroline Krook) has said that "It is easy to be born with Donald Duck, but it is not so easy to die with Donald Duck." I think it says absolutely everything, you need faith, you need something you can think about and that gives a strength and confidence.
About if he feels that the people have confidence in monarchy when he meets people
- I feel it very strongly in many situations when I'm travelling in Sweden in the country and meet people.
About that he grew up on Haga, and visiting there and seeing Princess Estelle playing there, does he get some childhood memories of Haga, from the playhouse there?
- I moved from Haga when I was four. But we had the opportunity to take advantage of the park and the house. The Palace was there, but we didn't use it. We were mostly out in the park and the garden and played when I was little and so I was back throughout my youth. It feels amazingly nice now to be able to see the crown princess and her family growing up there now in the same situation as I was, at the same age, four years. It feels right in some way.
About that at some point the crown princess takes over as queen. Can the king see it in front of him, what will happen? The world is changing so fast after all, the world is she into?
- Yes, that is what we will never know! One wonders, you can try to educate oneself and be open to things that come. But now, after all she has a completely different possibility, she is already much older than I was when I became King of Sweden. Hopefully I can have a good life and to avoid getting sick, it can give her a few more years, so she will have a completely different basis and chance, she stands on her feet, knows what she wants in a completely different way and has a completely different security and self-esteem, than what I had.
- I was relatively young, as people thought at the time. Or you might not think that one was so young at the time. I was after 27 years which is quite young at the moment, I think now.
- I was of course very uncertain. All the people were older. I was thinking about it the other day, out in the country, at Stenhammar, that I was always the youngest, wherever I went. Now I'm soon oldest wherever I go, the king laughs. It has changed a bit.
- It has done that you know all the people, you know the Swedish people, you know the places and you know most things, there is a tremendous security.
But it was tougher then, when the king came to?
- Yes of course. I was young and everything was new, I had to create something instead. To succeed my grandfather, he was 90 plus years. Before I realized that I can not change me, I am who I am and my potential and temperament, compared with my grandfather who was older and he had another area of interest which he had managed to grow over many, many years as crown prince.
- It was a completely different tempo in everything, when compared with now. It is much, much higher pace, it is completely different, says King Carl Gustaf.
One can listen to the interview here:

I'm not a Swede, but I think that bishop Krook meant with that people may realize many times in their lives that they need religion and faith in God. When you are a child, you read and look Donald Duck magazine (at least here in Finland), but when you are dying, you perhaps need something else?
King Carl Gustaf has referred to the "Det är lätt att födas med Kalle Anka, men det är svårt att dö med Kalle Anka", also in his interview 10 years ago before his 60th birthday. He said "När sista dagen kommer är man väldigt ensam = When the last day comes, you are very much alone.

There might also be another aspect of the Donald Duck-thing. There is a swedish TV-tradition that on christmas eve, at 3 pm, almost everyone watches "Donald Duck and his friends wishes a merry christmas". It's a compilation of Disney christmas clips from new and old movies. Some people are saying that children these days think that christmas is celebrated because of Donald Duck, aka Disney as the new religion. So that might also play a part in understanding the king's statement.
