I know there is a book that was recently published about the King that talked about affairs. I will see if I can find the name of the book. This is very common talk among Spaniards. However, let's try not to spread rumors. The only ones that would know the truth are the parties involved.

The book is Juan Carlos: Steering Spain from Dictatorship to Democracy by Paul Preston. According to the Washington Post, Preston is one of the most respected historians of modern Spain. You can read the excerpt on Amazon.com if you look for the book. I tried the Washington Post but it is in the Archives and you have to pay for the article.

I don't know why and this is pure speculation but to me it seems that they are not very close at all. Very rarely as just recently have we seen some demonstrations of closeness between them. But it just seems odd to me because the spanish royal family seems so relaxed and yet based on body language their relationship in public seems to be somewhat cold to me especially when I think how warm Queen Sophia can be with other people like the wives of foreign dignitaries or just randomn children. When I look at other royal couples like Paola and Albert, , Queen Margrethe and her husband, The Kings of Sweden, Queen Beatrix and Claus, and even Queen Elizabeth II and Phillip (at least from her to him in the way that she sometimes/ocassionally looks at him), they seem to betray some sort of affection and warmth and yet I dont feel the same about Sophia and Juan Carlos.

You're right in a way Elise... because in public the King and Queen don't show as much affection towards each other as say Albert and Paola or Margrethe and Henrik. But nobody will ever know what goes on in private

Even though there have always been rumors of Juan Carlos cheating on Sofia, afew of us agreed in the 'summer 2005' thread that the couple look at lot closer or 'have never looked better' with each other than years ago :p

I do believe they have an excellent working relationship and if one looks at current pictures there does seem to be a closeness that was there years ago.

There has been many, many rumours about King Juan Carlos infidelities. I'll just drop by some names mentioned in the Spanish press about the king's mistresses. Of course, feel free to disbelieve it:

- Marta Gayá; This is the most talked about, She lives in Mallorca and supposedly is his longtime mistress.

- Anne Igartiburu: Veeery beautiful tv presenter. Astonishingly beautiful. Her name was mentioned briefly, then she got married and no more rumours.

- Barbara Rey: (No kidding) A third rate Spanish actress, her name has been mentioned several times, I don't know if it's true or not, but I can tell she enjoys a lot these rumours. Once her house was robbed and she implied the burglars were looking for some material that could be dangerous for some very important person in the country blah blah blah.

- Nadiuska: A romanian actress based in Spain, hugely famous in the late 70s early 80s, in which she starred in many semiporn flicks. She used to be very beautiful, but now she's homeless, drug addict, psycologically damaged, a total wreck. Lives in the streets of Madrid from the charities of strangers. She appeared on tv some time ago saying something like she was involved with very important people and they are guilty of their situation now. Well, whatever. Maybe they had something when she was beautiful 25 years ago.

- Sandra Mozarewsky: Another semiporn actress (the profile repeats itself). She commited suicide in 1977 when she was pregnant. Well do the math.

- Carmen Cervera (the Baroness Thyssen herself). Some point the very borbonic features of her son Borja, whose father she has always refused to name. She was also a third rate actress in the 60s, etc, etc.

- Olghina de Robillant: An italian noble, she was the kings lover when he was in his early 20s. They broke up when he got engaged to Sofia. Later on, she sold the love letters Juan Carlos sent him. She has a daughter she has implied (not openly) that is Juan Carlos'.

Those are the ones I can remember. Of course feel free to believe whatever you want, you won't be wrong. I tend to believe Robillant's story, not the daughter's part. Marta Gaya has been mentioned several times. The rest is pure internet speculation (especially Carmen Cervera's son).

Wasn't he also involved with Maria-Gabriella of Savoy? (the daughter of the Italian exiled king). Also before he met Sofia?
I also do believe the story of Olghina de Robillant, but that was not really an affair because it happened before he met (or got serious with) Sofia.

I have heard many of these stories over the years and IMHO I think the majority of them are true. I don't think Juan Carlos ever really loved Sophia; he just made a dynastic marriage so one day his crown would be returned to him. I feel bad for Sophia, she has just been another royal woman who has had to put up with a philandering husband.

I wonder how the King can look his cheating son-in-law Jaime de Marichalar in the face?? I wonder if he has scolded Jaime for his behavior??
