I wonder how many of the younger Spaniards even know that Juan Carlos had a younger brother... Next to Juan Carlos' family they were supposed to have another family with royal highnesses...

Wouldn't he most likely have contracted an unequal marriage like both of his sisters and all of his uncles and aunts (whose children would normally have been royal highnesses had they married equally)? I've wondered whether Juan Carlos would have married a princess had he not been the future claimant to the defunct throne.

ETA: I have checked the dates and Alfonso's sisters as well as his cousins by Infante Alfonso were still unmarried at the time of his death, so there would have been several families of his generation which were equally likely to be Royal Highnesses (as Spain applies the same rules to grandchildren by daughters as grandchildren by sons).

I often think had The Infante Alfonso of Spain lived what dukedom would he have been given and also would he have been used by General Franco as a pawn to keep his older brother in line.

That would have been extremely interesting. I imagine that being the brother rather than the cousin of Juan Carlos would have made him more intimidating a pawn than Alfonso de Borbon y Dampierre.

He could even have concluded an equal marriage, in which case he (like Juan Carlos) would retain his dynastic rights and would not need a dukedom as his wife would have been an Infanta under the rules that applied before 1987 (unless he himself married into her family).

Yes goodness knows where he'd could have ended up in General Franco's grand scheme of things.

I think Infante Carlos would have been given a dukedom upon marriage it seems to have been the custom.

I think Infante Carlos would have been given a dukedom upon marriage it seems to have been the custom.

It was a recent custom for Infantes and Infantas who married unequally, beginning with Alfonso's uncles and Infante Jose Eugenio.

Infantas or Infantes who married equally before the changes in 1987, such as Alfonso's great-aunt Infanta Maria Teresa or his first cousin once removed Infante Alfonso, did not receive dukedoms as the custom before then was for the equal spouse to be given a royal title.

Engagement announcement of Juan Carlos and Sofia, September 12, 1961.
"Yesterday, Prince Constantine of Greece officially announced the betrothal of his sister, Princess Sofia, to Prince Juan Carlos de Borbón, son of Don Juan and grandson of King Alfonso XIII. Constantine received the news from his father by phone, King Pavlos, who is currently on vacation in Lausanne. Don Juan Carlos was also there. Once the news was announced to newspapers and local radios, the batteries on Lycabetos Hill, Athens, fired volleys to celebrate the events".
This text with hardly any variations appears in the editions of 'ABC' and 'La Vanguardia' of September 14 of that year, when the news of the marriage of don Juan's son reached Spain.

On the day of the announcement of the engagement, the young couple met with reporters in the gardens of Villa Vielle Fontaine. The future queen received a ruby bracelet from Juan Carlos.

Wonderful photo of the infant Princess and future queen with her parents.

They call him the Prince of Asturias. Was that retroactive?
