A proposal to abolish the monarchy and create a republic was defended by the party dei Lénk, on Tuesday, in the Chamber of Deputies and included in a broader project to Reform the Constitution.(..)

Today, July 1, Grand Duke Henri attended the ceremony of the commencement of the revised constitution:

 I was completely unaware of the new Constitution until now - I am surprised there has not been more talk about it on this forum.

Considering the turmoil the grand-ducal court has experienced the last few years, I would have thought the debate over the constitutional reforms to the monarchy would have been major news. Can those who have been following Luxembourg politics explain what has happened and what led to the reforms to the monarchy's succession, regency and finances which have been included in the new constitution?

I also had no clue and was wondering what this new constitution is about. Anyone being able to give a summary? Why is a new constitution needed? What are the main proposals/debates?

I don't know the exact ins and oust but it seems that a lot of other things have changed not just the constitution referring to the Grand Duke and monarchy. It seems like, as you can imagine given the old constitution was 175 years old, it didn't reflect modern Luxembourg. One example - the annual allowance for the Grand Duke and heir were set out in the old Luxembourg Franc currency - no longer used and replaced by the Euro. It looks to me like its been in large part a "cleaning up" to allow the constitution to reflect the Grand Duchy of today. Most of the changes regarding the monarchy seem to have already been in place (change to succession laws etc).

Today, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender, are on an official visit to Luxembourg. The Presidential Couple were received this morning, in front of the Grand-Ducal Palace, by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa during the traditional official ceremony.

I thought the LRF are traditionally at their holiday villa in the South of France from the end of June until early September?

Remembering former summer holidays they usually spent the month of August there, maybe arriving by the end of July. Two whole months would be too long to be absent from their duties. Family members come and go, according to their time schedule or occupations, if they have any:flowers:

I guess we will get the official annual summer holiday photo by middle of August.
