I guess there was a problem with the handshakes

"Premier Italian Matteo Renzi received at Palazzo Chigi the real Norway. At the end of the Renzi honor guard he holds out his hand to Harald V, in breach of the Protocol are the real wants to extend their hand first. The King of Norway, in fact, does not reciprocate."

Not only did he commit a faux pas when extending his hand, inviting the King to shake it, but he tried to recover from it by moving his hand to the back of the King, which is an additional error in protocol.

Now, the King and royals in general are not overly fussed about these things, unless they place them in awkward situations, because people in general struggle with basic etiquette these days, but as the Italian reaction indicates, one would expect a Prime Minister to have been properly briefed and prepared with regards to protocol.

King Harald praises Italy's efforts for the boat refugees - Norway Today

The Royal House of Norway - State Visit to Italy

The state banquet:

http://blogg.tv2.no/kongebloggen/fil...4/tb0a2776.jpg

The President's speech:

Italias statsminister ville håndhilse, men det var ikke kong Harald interessert i
Quote:
The Italian Prime Minister wanted to shake hands, but King Harald wasn't interested in doing that.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi stretched out his hand, but King Harald wouldn't greet him.

Both King Harald and Queen Sonja are visiting Italy. A video where the Prime Minister is trying to shake hands with the king, but is rejected, has spread rapidly in the Italian media.

Against the rules

The reason is that this conflicts with the royal etiquette, which says it is the royal who shall stretch forward the hand first, according to the largest newspaper in Italy La Repubblica.

Many have responded to the incident. Both Huffington Post It, ImolaOggi, Il Secolo Xix and Supernoticias have discussed the situation. The debate has also flourished among Italians on Twitter.

Deputy Head of Communications at the Royal Palace Sven Gj. Gjeruldsen denies that the king refused to shake hands.

It is wrong

''It's not true that they didn't shook hands. I know that the Prime Minister didn't try to shake hands in the video'', Gjeruldsen says to Nettavisen.

Gjeruldsen is in Italy with the royal couple and says that King Harald shake hands with Renzi when he arrived at Palazzo Chigi earlier in the day.
As an expert said tonight: This is nonsense - King Harald is not a person who cares about etiquette/protocol and he has been the first to shake hands several times before.

Strange protocol: The italian president´s daughter, acting as first lady, standing first (!) in line, and not last, at the right hand of Queen Sonja at the shaking-hands-line (the "defilée") before the banquet...?!
Normally it is this way: 1st the host, then the principle guest, 3rd in line the guest´s spouse and last the hosts spouse!

Very rude not to "flank" the royal couple!

People/media here in Norway are generally not interested in state visits to other countries, but this time both NRK and TV2 have followed the King/Queen to Italy, and we've got several updates on TV. Videos of this is as usual not posted online.

But we have the President's youtube account - day 2:

I believe the president's daughter stepped in as 'first lady' as the president's wife died several years ago. Whilst that is indeed the normal protocol for formal pictures it has been broken plenty of times before by real full time first ladies and presidents amongst others. Personally I dont think in this case its a big deal, maybe the presidents daughter was nervous?

Its quite customary, if a president/head of state is a bachelor/widow for an adult daughter or in absence of that, a sister, to stand in as first lady. James Buchanan had a niece who served as first lady. Grover Cleveland's sister Rose served until he married.

It may have been a bit of nerves, new to protocol. I am sure it was not at all meant as a snub.

I know all that. That is not what I meant. But it is more than odd that a first lady of a hosting country is the first person in line to be greeted at the defilée - and I think it´s a quite strange thing to do.
Well, a bit of typical italian "creative" chaotisism?

King Harald has been political.
Albeit in line with the current government, the majority in the Parliament and I think it is safe to say, in line with the majority of Norwegians.
But nevertheless political.
- Or rather he didn't dodge a controversial question.

Det norske kongehus blander sig i flygtningedebatten: 'Vi kan ikke tage imod hele Afrika!'
Kong Harald: – Vi kan ikke ta imot hele Afrika | ABC Nyheter

He was asked to comment on the current refugee crisis in Europe and many refugees have Italy as first point of entry.
King Harald said: "I think Europe currently is doing all that is possible. Whether that is enough or not is debatable. But we must try and do something there where the origin of the crisis comes from, in order for it to stop. In the end that must be the solution. We can't accept/receive all of Africa. That doesn't work".

He got immediate backing from the government.
Kongen: – Vi kan ikke ta imot hele Afrika - Kongehuset - VG
The Minister for Integration supports the King and praise him for being so clear and easy to understand in his statement. There was no need for moderating that statement.

Experts are as always popping up, when such things happen.
Kong Harald om flyktningkrisen: – Vi kan ikke ta imot hele Afrika - Aftenposten
Here a professor explains the obvious, that the King was very direct in his reply, and that he could have been more diplomatic.

- I also think it's safe to say King Harald didn't insult his Italian hosts with that statement either.
