The love story between the Emperor and Empress is unique indeed!

Unique because of the very particular family the Emperor was raised in; because of the origins of the Empress, the historical moment, the country, and the way it developed...

Michiko might have been persistent in tennis court but Crown Prince Akihito was equally, if not more, persistent to court her for marriage.

In an interview with former NATO Secretary General and former Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Willy Claes he claims a young King Baudouin of the Belgians was a trait d'union between Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko:

[....]

"Do you see that picture there? That was with King Baudouin, in Japan. We were there on a visit when -all of a sudden- it was announced that the Emperor would visit our embassy – abroad, that was. That never happened!"

(On a run) “It turned out: King Baudouin had once tremendously helped the Emperor. When the Emperor was Crown Prince, he had his eye on a lady from the gentry. That was not allowed by his father. To take her away from the Crown Prince, she was sent to a pensionat (boarding school) in Brussels. Until -at a certain point- the Crown Prince met the young King Boudouin and told him about his great love.

King Boudouin then played courrier d'amour and brought the letters from the Crown Prince to her. She later became he Empress indeed."

“When King Baudouin died, the first confirmation of attendance for his funeral came from the Emperor and Empress.”

[.....]

It is fascinating how royals from geographically separated countries manage to build strong friendships between themselves. Thank you for sharing and translating this. I wonder if Baudouin and Akihito sympathized with one another as heirs to thrones which were destabilized and fathers whose reputations were irreversibly tainted by the events of World War II.
