Empress Emerita Michiko underwent cataract surgery on both eyes in June 2019 and breast cancer surgery in September the same year. The follow-up check had been postponed amid the spread of the novel coronavirus.

While the medical checkups did not find any major problems, Empress Emerita Michiko continues to have symptoms of low-grade fever, weight loss has not fully recovered, and a diagnostic indicator for heart failure remains higher than usual. No particular problems were found for Emperor Emeritus Akihito.

But isn't he the one who retired due to health issues? Was that really meant to be about the Empress Emerita?

I'm sorry to hear that there continue to be concerns about Michiko's health. She really has had one thing after another over the last few years. It's odd that apparently they have not been able to pinpoint the cause of the fever and weight loss; I'm not liking the sound of that at all.

I'll highlight some info not included in the Kyodo and Nippon articles below

- paying attention to coronavirus updates via IHA doctors and staff
- marks Okinawa memorial day and anniversaries of atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
- concern for victims of July's heavy rain damage in Kumamoto Prefecture and other areas of Kyushu
- continued thoughts for people and areas recovering from 2011 earthquake and tsunami
- during morning and evening walks with the Emperor Emeritus, the couple reminisce about domestic and foreign trips such as Kagawa prefecture, regions visited twice during Showa and Heisei eras, Hawaii, Iran, Ethiopia, India, and Nepal
- currently reading aloud Yamamoto Kenkichi's "Kotoba no saijiki " (Language Yearbook?) with the Emperor Emeritus after breakfast
- reading letters and books sent by many people
- With regard to family members, regardless of whether they are public or private, Their Majesties are always quietly watching over them from a distance, hoping for their health

The former emperor and empress currently use the Takanawa Imperial Residence as a temporary home, where they take walks together in the garden and share their memories of the trips they took in Japan and abroad, the agency said.

[...]

According to the agency, she has expressed her thoughts about medical workers and those providing essential services amid the pandemic. She has also indicated her sympathy for athletes and people in the entertainment industry who have been forced to refrain from their activities.

Last year, she underwent successful breast cancer and cataract surgeries. However, she has experienced weight loss as well as temperatures of over 37 C on most afternoons since May.

She has also complained of stiffness in her left fingers, possibly an effect of hormonal treatment following her breast cancer surgery, the agency said.

Despite her condition, she continues to show care for the 86-year-old former emperor, saying, "I'm here for times like these," according to her aides.

He watches television programs about the history of Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Okinawa that burned down last year, hoping for its reconstruction, agency officials said.

The Emperor Emeritus was worried when dozens of cars were stranded because of heavy snowfall on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, last week. When the traffic jam was cleared, he was relieved, agency officials said.

I like Empress Michiko's modern jewellery; she and Queen Sonja and Queen Margrethe all wear nice modern jewellery and I admire that because so many royal ladies only wear the old stuff really.

It's not surprising, of course, that HM continues to be deeply interested in people who have been impacted by natural(/health) disasters. Or that he gave a special mention to Okinawa.

It is interesting, though, that the IHA continues to give him a platform for his communications about national issues. Do they receive much publicity?

The Japanese media cover Emperor Emeritus Akihito's birthday and press release pretty well. FNN also made a video of his activities and concerns, combining footage of birthday, Meiji Shrine visit, and people stuck in the heavy snow.
