The Emperor and Empress of Japan will pay a state visit to Vietnam 28 February - 6 March, the first ever such visit between the two countries.

Following this visit, the imperial couple will go to Thailand on a brief visit to pay their condolences after the death of King Bhumibol.[FONT=verdana, arial][FONT=verdana, arial]

Thanks for the update!
The visit to Vietnam was successful. It is nice to see members of the family and Prime Minister Abe welcoming Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

The history of tilapia farming dates to the 1960s, when then Crown Prince Akihito, who is also an ichthyologist, recommended the fast-breeding tilapia as a promising solution for food shortages in rural Thailand when he visited the country in late 1964.

Japan donated 50 specimens the following year, which were bred by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in a palace pond. The population exploded to 10,000, and their fingerlings were distributed to communities across the country through the intermediary of fisheries experimental stations.

With the spread of the aquaculture, the tilapia has become highly affordable and is the most consumed freshwater fish in this Southeast Asian country.

Tilapia have been taken up in publications related to the royal family and in university teaching materials in Thailand as a symbol of friendly ties with Japan.

It sounds like a wonderful achievement.
