Regent Couple's Summer Tour aboard the Dannebrog: 2009 - 2015

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thank you for this Muhler! I think it must always be a bittersweet moment for HM and the Prince Consort when the Dannebrog season ends. Does she remain moored in front of Amalienborg throughout the winter?

You are welcome.

No, Dannebrog returns to naval station Frederikshavn, in northern Jutland, for refitting, a bit of paint and so on, before training with the new conscripts begin next spring, so they are ready for the summer cruise next year.

bt.dk picture gallery from today, first picture of the gallery, there is a small stuffed elephant, I thought it was cute.

That stuffed elephant is legendary in Denmark. In the 50's there was a very popular series of family movies called Far Til Fire (Father of Four). The main character was the youngest boy in the family, Lille Per (Little Per). Lille Per's loyal companion is the stuffed elephant on wheels, Bodil. In these days of remakes these movies are also being remade. The boy greeting the Queen plays Lille Per in the new movies and the man in the water plays the father. It seems the regent couple watched them film a scene for the new movie.

I must admit I've never been able to get behind the remakes, but I love the classic movies. One of my favourite Christmas songs was made for one of the original movies and naturally the elephant gets a mention in the song. ;)

Both CP Frederik and Prince Joachim have been teased about now having the title of "Father of Four".

Thanks, Iceflower :flowers:

Yes, it's a bath-chair.

Plejehjem (*) nursing homes for elderly here in DK implement more and more robots, automatic beds, chairs, tools and so on.
The idea is partly to save money on staff, partly to allow the elderly to maintain as much control of their lives as possible, I.e. in regards to when to dress, when to get up in the morning, when to wash yourself. Rather than that being determined according to a schedule.
It's also meant to let the elderly retain at least some kind of dignity. No one want's to be helpless and personal grooming is among one of the last things you wish to leave to someone else.
Last but not least, machines and robots free staff (in theory) to interact on a more personal level with the elderly. Gives them time for a chat and so on.

(*) Not to be confused with a retirement home or elder centre, where elderly have their own small apartment and as far as possible tend to their own needs. Or they can go join other elderly for various activities or a meal.
A plejehjem, nursing home for elderly is the last stop before you move into the one-room apartment with a lid.
The generation of my parents and grandparents as well considered it shameful to be dependent of their children. They said so on many occasions.
Here in DK you are brought up to become independent. To be able to look after yourself, the sooner the better and if need be not having to rely on anyone, especially your children, until you die.
I mention that because in other cultures you are brought up to become a contributing part of the family network. The family will in return (is expected to) take care of you when you grow old.
In such cultures the concept of their parents ending up in a nursing home is considered a shame.
It's sometimes difficult for both sides to comprend the different outlooks.

thanks Muhler for this insight into Danish culture. :flowers:
it is true, in the Hispanic community it is considered a shame/or frowned on to send your elder parents or grandparents to a nursing home. Usually it is expected for one to take care of your parents/grandparents.

Thanks for posting, Mariettz :)

I didn't know that story.
It doesn't seem like the Hungarian hussars were around when the Guards Hussars escorted the Regent Couple. A pity.

To judge by the photos the Queen looked far more at ease during
the island visits than during her visit in Faaborg! IMO is has something
to do with the fact that the islanders try to arrange the visit to the
best of their abilities without any pretence! That's when you see
HM in slacks and an old sweater and her hair looks as if it's been
combed with a hand grenade :)!
IMO that' a paradox of HM: she's good at the pageantry stuff and
she's good at the more relaxed style. However she appears a tad uncomfortable with "in-between" provincial arrangements, you know
when a town has been painted and asphalted to the nines and
people are bending over double to get things right and yet..somehow
they still manage to get it wrong or being a little too awestruck, if you know what I'm getting at;)!
My connections in Faaborg noted that the mayors wife skipped
the hat during her 15 mins of fame in the carriage procession with
her husband, HRH and HM:bang:! I mean, the court and the RF are
putting on a show by sending the household cavalry, carriages
and the old Daimlers to a small provincial town, and you would think
that those involved and invited to the reception on board the royal
yacht would do their best in return!
Maybe Faaborg (approx. 7.000 inhabitants!) is a not the place to
sport formal hats and fascinators, but AFAIK this is the first time
I've seen the wife of a Danish mayor dismiss protocol! Unless
I'm mistaken I think that any woman of an English hamlet would
go to the nearest M & S to get a £ 20 straw hat for a wedding, but
this is not how it operates over here I'm afraid!

Thanks for sharing your impressions, Viv! That was interesting to read!

The first part of the summer tour ended today, June 9, with a visit to Endelave and Margrethe has shown
that she doesn't have fears of contacts ;)

Thanks, Iceflower. :flowers:

I finally got around to watching this video and it's priceless! :ROFLMAO:

One of the ways to hunt for rabbits is to use a ferret, in this case a ferret named Fritte. You simply let a ferret enter the boroughs (I think it's called) of rabbits and - eventually the ferret will emerge with or without a rabbit.

Fritte's owner told the Regent Couple about that and Prince Henrik held the the ferret, somewhat catiously, he was a bit worried that Fritte would eat his ear.
Then he handed over the animal to QMII and with ferrets being in the same line of business as dachhunds, she seemed to take a liking to Fritte. However the owner warned her, they can bite!
The owner also demonstrated how they use a collar with a beacon to track the whereabouts of Fritte and his colleagues. The alternative is to wait, and wait and wait for Fritte to finally emerge.
PH asked: "Do you use that to track down your wife as well"?
The owner replied jokingly "No, - but sometimes she slips a collar down my pocket in order to keep track of me".

:previous:

Thanks for that, Muhler :D

Here's an additional gallery of the final day in Endelave. You rarely see someone riding on a bike and another
person with an umbrella running after that person ;) And besides that Henrik seems to have been a bit too
fast for the protection ;)

Summary of a number of articles in Billed Bladet #23 & 24, 2012.
Written by Ken Richter and Annelise Weimann.

The main purpose of these cruises is to visit islands and small towns that would normally not get a royal visit. These visits differ from visit to merchant towns, which follow a set pattern. A couple of merchant towns were also on the list.
This year Dannebrog sailed to the islands south of Zealand and south of Funen, in one of the most scenic surroundings in DK. As such these waters are among the favourits among private boatowners.

Stubbekøbing, a small town (actually a big village) on the island of Falster. Stubbekøbing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Judging from the pictures the entire population of 2.000 turned out to greet the Regent Couple while they strolled through the town the townhall, where they waved to people from the very low balcony.

While QMII visited a retirement home, Prince Henrik went to a local museum and admired a vintage Nimbus moterbike from 1934. (*) After that they were treated to a sample of the local summer revue.

They also visited the nearby Medieval Centre, where gallant knights in shining armour jousted. The centre is worth a visit for medieval nerds as there is a large collection of working medieval stonethrowing machines, some of them very large and pretty complicated.

Faaborg, a town on the island of Funen Faaborg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia being a major town of more than 7.000 people it is naturally a major cultural hub.. almost. The Regent Couple were as such treated to a scene at a filmset, where they remake a series a popular familiy films from the 50's.
They also rode in a carriage through the narrow streets of the town, again with the locals turning out in force.
The obligatory visit to the local elder centre taken care of it was off to the local high school where QMII wittnessed some scientific experiments.
Prince Henrik again got all the luck, he visited a chocolate factory and sampled some of the products.

Avernakø and Lyø, two tiny islands south of Funen.
First to Avernakø, population: 100. After a short tour of the island it was time for lunch with practically the entire population, who all stood in line to greet the Regent Couple who held court in the courtyard of a farm.
The tour guide, Rasmus Andersen, said afterwards: "We had a lot of laughs and I was surprised easy they were to talk with".
Then it was off to Lyø and again the total population, 140 in total, turned out. The Regent Couple were taken on a tour of the island, transported in a hay-waggon pulled by a tractor that had been washed for the occasion and shined proudly. Here PH and QMII were treted to the local tourist attraction, a bell-rock. If you bang on the poor defenceless rock with a stone it emits a bell-like sound.... sort of. But the there was coffee with pastry afterwards, so no complaining there.
The transport to and from the islands took part in one of the smaller of Dannebrogs boats.

Middelfart, a town on Funen, Middelfart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia with a population of almost 15.000 it's a veritable city in comparison to the previous visits during the cruise. Unfortunately it was pouring down when Dannebrog arrived, so QMII wore her flower-power raincoat, so no one were in doubt as to where their Monarch was.
Now, this being almost a big city things were much grander here in Middelfart. The Regent Couple rode in a carriage through the rainsoaked streets, escorted by the guards hussars. QMII visited a ceramics exhibtion and a home for adults who are physically and mentally handicapped.
By the the weather had improved and the couple went to the nearby town of Strib, where a large bronce sculpture named Torso made by Prince Henrik greets visitors to the town. (**)
As it so happen, Prince Henrik is also honorary gunner (***) in Sophieodde Saluting Guild and delighted ly he fireda salut of three shots by two field pieces from the First Schleswigan War. (Around 1850).

Finally it was off to the island of Endelave north of Funen. Population: 185.
At least it was sunny!
Endelave Town consists of one street, adorned with flags and the locals had moved out in the fron gardens where they sat and sipped coffee and enjoyed the spectacle. But the Regent Couple were nevertheless offered a cup of coffee and a cake or two several times during the stroll through the village, which the gladly accepted. - Not to mention homemade able cider, beer, cherry wine and so on. So no empty stomach on that visit.
QMII also greeted the eldest on the island, Inga Larsson, who recently turned 100 and as such got a birthday telegram from the Majesty. (****)
It was also here on Endelave that they encountered the ferret Fritte. Fritte and his colleagues take part in huniting down the 10.000 rabbits that are killed and eated on Endelave each year.
There is also a very small brewery on the island and here QMII turned a tap so that the latest brand of beer, called Tøse Bryg = Girlie Brew, could be made.
The local school also got a visit. Seven pupils in total and all in the same classroom.
Herbs is among the niche productions on the island. That was something that interested Henrik, so he got a few samples to bring back home.
But such a long day on an island is strenous, so Prince Henrik borrowed a pensioner-cycle and rode back to the small harbour with his adjutant running beside him.
By now it has become really windy and it was considered too risky t sail the Regent Couple by boat out to Dannebrog who was anchored way off the island. So a Navy Home Guard cutter had been on stand-by. The Regent Couple boarded the cutter and sailed out to Dannebrog, where they were transferred to the bigger ship, a novel experience for all, but it went well.

(*) Nimbus (motorcycle) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia We are talking major collectors items here! I've seen motorcycle enthusiast ruthlessly push pregnant women and small children aside so that they could stand and drool over a Nimbus. - Completely ignoring Harley Davidsons and costum build choppers.

(**) Or spook any visitors.... The Torso is a stylised sculture with female shapes to one side and masculine traits to the other. Or so the text says, because if I wasn't told I wouldn't have guessed it. Oh well, I've seen worse.

(***) He's actually kanoner = Kanoniere in German, I guess that can best be translated to master gunner in English. It's a title going back to the first cannons.
A kanoner was a well paid and very sought after specialist. He was an expert in handling canons, down to calculating the proper charge, windage, angles and so on. He would also oversee the proper mixture of components when making gunpowder. A kanoner was in charge of at least a battery of cannons, with the senior master gunner (overkanoner) being in charge of a whole artillery train.
As such a kanoner had a very special status and so did the cannons. During the wars of the 1500 and early 1600's a misbehaving mercenary would find sanctury from the wrath of the profoss, if he managed to put his hand on a cannon. That sanctury would last for a day or so, during which time the profoss or his men were not allowed to stand around, waiting for the culprit. With just a little luck the mercenary could sneak away overnight or his friends might be successful in appealing to the profoss.
A Profoss was back then in charge of order and discipline in a camp. Not to be confused with the Hurenwebel, who was in charge of order among the campfollowers and the baggage train.

(****) All turning 100 who wish to, will get a telegramm from the Majesty on his/her birthday. All it takes is for someone to notify the court some time in advance.

The second part of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik's summer tour will start next weekend!

As stated before the stages will be:

September 2 - Skanderborg
September 3 - Billund and Grindsted
September 4 - Næstved
September 5 - Bornholm
September 6 - Bornholm and Christiansø

Here's the complete programme that was released today:

Thanks, Iceflower :flowers:

And my favorite is this one: Vejle Amts Folkeblad - Lokalområder - Billund - Kongelig modtagelse i Grindsted I don't think she had a chance to present the flower to QMII. - What a pity.

The great thing about DRF visits to towns is that the local media cover every possible angle of the vist with countless photos.
Vejle Amts Folkeblad - Lokalområder - Billund - Populære husarer samlede publikum
This gallery focuses on the hussars. I see that the local riding clubs are well represented and are showing off to the cavalry. Unsurprisingly the conscripts in the mounted squadron practically all have a past in local riding clubs like these. Which is also the reason why there are so many women in the squadron. (*)
And to any kindergarten the Guards Hussars are even more impressive than police on motorbikes.

(*) The Guards Hussars is nevertheless a combat regiment, so the concripts go through the basic training as combat troops, before serving in the mounted squadron.
Incidentally modern women are physcally speaking perfectly suited to being hussars anno 1810. In fact the average woman today is taller and weighs a little more than the "model hussar" back then.

BT has also covered the Regent Couple's visit to Skanderborg and Grindsted.

Here with a gallery from Grindsted: http://www.bt.dk/royale/regentparret-paa-karettur-i-grindsted
Notice the 6. picture. The løber = runner in the red uniform standing behind the Regent Couple, she's new. Never seen her before.
The jaeger/jæger next to her is somewhat older in service.
I'm not really sure about the seniority or exact role of a runner and a jaeger, except that they are personal attendees of the DRF.

A few years ago another woman was employed as a runner at the court. She attracted some attention, because she was the first woman in such a position. You may have noticed her from time to time standing behind the Regent Couple's chairs at official dinners.
Etnically she must be an adoptee from Korea of Vietnam, the new one isn't.

Back to Grindsted: http://www.bt.dk/royale/prins-henrik-vi-kaemper-nok-til-daglig-margrethe
With three HQ pics of not least QMII.
They visited a cultural and activity center, where they were encouraged to try out a stepping-game against each other. QMII was game (couldn't resist :p) but PH, being in a different weight-class than his wife declined with the words: "We fight/joust enough among ourselves on a day to day basis".

And my favorite is this one: Vejle Amts Folkeblad - Lokalområder - Billund - Kongelig modtagelse i Grindsted I don't think she had a chance to present the flower to QMII. - What a pity.

Well, photos of children beat all competition, there are no better ones than those..:)

Some pics of the tour have already been put on the official website, I can imagine they'll be updated:

Can't wait to hear the story behind that!
Because the headline litterally reads: The Queen and the Floppy-tit. - Yes, as in breast.

ADDED.

We now have an explanation for the peculiar headline.
The Regent Couple saw a sculpture called: The Floppy-tit and her daughters.

There were also presented to a garbagecan, - which spoke to QMII.
QMII put a piece of paper in the can, which replied: "Thank you Your Majesty and welcome to Næstved".
The garbagecan is one among a number of such cans set up in public places in Næstved, usually they burp, when someone put waste into them, but today one of the cans had extended it's vocabulary.
Actually a good idea, that will ensure that small children - of all ages -will put waste in the cans.

Further down the page of this link: http://www.sn.dk/TV-Skraldespand-talte-til-Dronningen/TV/artikel/222169
You'll see first a clip of QMII and the garbagecan, then a picture of the.... eeeh, sculpture. And it's.... interesting.

I see, Slattenpatten is a figure from the local mythology, a female troll.

The two royal dachshunds, Vega and Helike were also presented with gifts: http://www.sn.dk/Royale-hunde-faar-designerskaale/Naestved/artikel/221576
In the form of two specially designed porcelain water bowls.
They are designed by the company Kähler.
However, since the order went in one dachshund, Evita, has passed on to the Eternal Lamppost, so there is now a bowl in surplus - in case anyone should like to put in a bid.
There is a picture of the bowls in the link above.
