Queen Margrethe's Summer Tour aboard the Dannebrog: 2015 - 2023

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thank, Iceflower.

A minor detail though, text says that the cruise in the later summer is expected to take place as planned.

I'm honestly surprised that M&F are not taking over the first cruise.
I certainly expect them to do some sailing with Dannebrog otherwise we have a ship not fulfilling it's primary function as a sailing residence and representation for the DRF. And that is a waste of the crew, who have been looking forward to sailing with members of the DRF. That's one of the main reasons why there is a 2-3 year waiting list to serve as a conscript aboard Dannebrog.

I can well understand why QMII would cancel or postpone the first cruise, because the destinations would require her to sail in and out in a chaluppe and that can indeed be a problem for someone with back-problems. Not to mention that it won't be better if the sea is a little rough these days.

I'm very keen to see how QMII is on her birthday and also when she boards Danneborg from the season.
Because there is the distinct risk that QMII may have to cancel the second cruise as well. In that case surely M&F will take over, I expect.

I can only speculate why M&F would not take over the first summer cruise. Hopefully it is because they have something else going on those days that cannot be changed. Otherwise, I see no reason why they could not take over that so that the ship does not sit idle, the locations being visited are not left with un-met plans (I assume that plans had already been in place and arrangements made) and the ship's crew does not miss out either. Doesn't the crew have hours they have to meet? So just canceling it from its original date seems unfair to quite a few people tbh. But, like I said, can only speculate as to reasons. :whistling:

I am surprised she is doing the boarding of the ship..isn't that strenuous as well? Frederik could have done that tbh.

The crew will get the time at sea that is required, it is after all also a training. And they usually visit a couple of foreign ports during the summer as well.
But it is of course not the same, if the DRF isn't there. That's after all one of the main reasons why the volunteer.

Frederik could easily cover the boarding and considering the circumstances I think it's wiser if he did and I would not be the least bit surprised if M&F ended up taking over.

Is the Danneborg handicap accessible? I was just wondering if QMII is using some sort of assistance (walker? wheelchair?) would she be able to board the ship or go below once she gets aboard.

Not really.
She'll have to walk up a landing to get aboard. - They can of course hoist her aboard, but that would be a little undignified. ?
The ship is also full of stairs and if the sea is a bit unruly that can be challenging, especially if you use a walking stick.

So basically if you are even moderately handicapped, Dannebrog is no place for you.

Interesting.

QMII boarded Dannebrog from the naval yard on the opposite side of the harbor and of course within an enclosed area, so it appears no one saw her actually board the ship.

I guess she was supported while walking up the landing. I also guess this was decided on, partly because it wouldn't have been an elegant sight and partly because it was practical to have Dannebrog moored at the quay there.

The articles reports her using a walking stick while on the deck.

Normally QMII sails to Dannebrog aboard the chaluppe - in the ancient tradition when boarding a ship. It's IMO also more stylish.
But that option involves walking over cobbled stones and walking down steps and boarding the chaluppe and not least disembarking the chaluppe in full view of the photographers...
And there is the old navy tradition that the highest ranking enters a boat as the last one, so no crew members standing on the quay and entering the chaluppe after her. And at the landing the highest ranking leaves the boat as the first one, so no one standing on the landing lending a hand.
QMII is very much a sailor's daughter and she has a tendency to be a stickler for naval traditions. So not doing things the proper way will no doubt offend the navy, Neptune and the International Association of Seabirds.

ADDED:

As could be predicted there are lots of speculations as to why QMII boarded Dannebrog from the naval yard.
BT: https://www.bt.dk/royale/mystik-om-...-derfor-er-dronning-margrethes-traditionsrige
Who also speculate as to whether QMII could stay away from cigarettes. The Usually dependable Trine Larsen from BB, believe so. QMII is stubborn enough to go cold turkey on cigarettes. - (I believe she can, but can she still keep her fingers off the cigarettes? And if she can't can that affect her progress at the current stage?)

EB reports that QMII was pretty agile when she boarded Dannebrog back in February as is evident from photos and video.
https://ekstrabladet.dk/underholdni...lige/her-er-billederne-du-ikke-maa-se/9745698

BB Speculate that is was out of consideration to QMII's back that she opted to board from the quay.

However, Se & Hør asked the Defense Command, why the area was sealed off today, that QMII was to board Dannebrog. (Normally the public can, with some restrictions, enter the area of the naval yard.) But that is because of considerable military activity there these days.
https://www.seoghoer.dk/kongelige/d...grethe-stige-ombord-paa-kongeskibet-dannebrog
- That does sound plausible, because due to the war in Ukraine and the often quite tense situation in the Baltic sea and the fact that you can hardly squeeze a rowboat past the many warships there, navy ships of all kinds and all nationalities are frequently seen in Copenhagen harbor.

I will however say, that considerations to QMII's back is also plausible.

It is also plausible that she can have taken up smoking again, and that can, could and might have an influence on her recovery.
So it's open season for speculations and I can't say which is the most correct.

Regardless of military exercises, given the unsteadiness of a chaloupe (or a glorified dinghy as some – most certainly not myself – would call it :D), I think it makes perfect sense for QMII to opt to board from land. Wobbly movements are a killer when you have back pains, which I assume she still has following the procedure.

Surprisingly good style on EB's end to note that she endured Dannebrogs stairs without issues.

And lovely to see her out and about! She looks very happy – although she's a bit far away. I recall some people grumbling that she'd probably have to cancel this engagement. I'm glad she proved them wrong ;)

Still she is using a cane?

Yes, she is. You can tell from tho photos of her on the deck.

Not a dinghy, it's worse! They call it a barge in English! A barge!?! A nation with a long and proud maritime history. :ermm:
I know it is the navy and as we all know the navy is ever only three oar-strokes away from being brigands, but I simply cannot bring myself to translate the name of such a beautiful boat into a barge.

We may have to raid Lindisfarne again to teach them Brits proper nautical terms. :viking:

It's a tender, not a barge. ;)

That's even worse. :ermm:
A tender transports paraffin, sacks of potatoes and midshipmen.

No, a chaluppe. Feel the word roll over your tongue like waves.

This seagull repellent is a barge:

This knuckle-walker is a tender:

But this beautiful, graceful and feminine boat is a chaluppe:

The navies should leave it to the army to get things right and proper. ;)

I'm impressed that she was able to get onto the ship at all -- those steps up to the deck look steep. Good for her!

As the latest posts did not have anything to do with Queen Margrethe’s summer tour, they have been moved to the family’s general news thread.

In English speaking countries, tender doesn't refer to a kind of boat. It refers to the Function of the boat.

A tender can take many forms. It generally just refers to a boat that are often decomissioned ships, that now service other ships. Bring supplies etc. As a ship, in any form at all, that's main purpose is to deliver people to locations and not serve battle function, the royal yacht is precisely a tender.

QMII did something unusual today during her visit to the town of Vordingborg. (Vordingborg has a long story in regards to the competition from the Hanseatic League in the 1200s, but that's for another time, it's getting late.)

As usual when there is a royal visit all the municipal kindergartens are mobilized and all OAP residents who can be wheeled outside are wheeled outside and issued flags.
That of course also happened today.
So QMII drove along her car, with Guards Hussars escorting her when she noticed some elderly outside. She stopped the whole royal roadshow, jumped out of the car - almost, she used her cane - and greeted and chatted a little with the elderly, with the delighted mayor next to her. (Good photos, him be happy!)

This is most unusual for QMII. Partly because she is not in the habit of mingling too much with the crowd and not unexpectedly. Partly because she is after all well past 80 herself and there is also a schedule to stick to.
So my guess is that she was in an unusually good mood today.

You can see it all on video here:

- As you can tell from the parched vegetation we are still struggling with after-effects of the severe 23 hour drought we have had. Fortunately we are now back to normal with the daily cloudburst.

Why didn't they show her chatting in the video instead of just standing and waving?

Maybe after her mobility problems earlier this year, she has a new appreciation of how much effort it would have taken to get all those people lined up to wave to her. :)

The Queen has really been in top form during her summer cruise. Nice to see
