HM Margrethe II has made over fifty official/state visits which, of course, do not include weddings, christenings or funerals since becoming Queen of Denmark in 1972. This thread is an attempt to provide an overview of the Queen's foreign visits.

28 May - 2 June 1975 8-Day Official Visit to the Soviet Union

Queen Margrethe concluded an eight-day official visit in the Soviet Union on 2 June 1975. It was the first visit by a European monarch to the USSR since the 1917 October Revolution.

22 November 1976 Official Visit to Luxembourg

On 22 November 1976, Grand Duke Jean was awarded the Order of the Elephant by HM Queen Margrethe.

April 1977 Official Visit to Yugoslavia

April 1977: Denmark’s Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik paid an official visit to Yugoslavia. During the visit they had lunch with President Tito and his wife on their private holiday island Vanga. The Royal couple were transported to the President’s house by an electrically driven car. Queen Margrethe shares the front seat with President Tito while Mrs Tito and Prince Henrik share the back seat.

8 November 1977 State Visit to Italy

Queen Margrethe accompanied by Prince Henrik arrived in Rome on an official State Visit. The royal couple flew from home airport to the Quirinale presidential palace by helicopter where they were welcomed by President Giovanni Leone. Afterwards, they laid a wreath on the tomb of Italy’s Unknown Soldier. The Queen and the President Giovanni pass a guard of honour of mounted Cuirassers at the Quirinale Presidential Palace in Rome. 12 October 1978 State Visit to France

Palais de l'Elysée: President Valery Giscard d'Estaing kisses the hand of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark as her husband, Prince Henrik (R) looks on. The President and his wife, First Lady Anne-Aymone Giscard d'Estaing, received the royal couple at the Palais de l'Elysee.

On 12 October 1978, President Valery Giscard d'Estaing was awarded the Order of the Elephant by HM Queen Margrethe.

Reims Cathedral: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark shares a laugh with her husband Prince Henrik. During the royal couple's trip to France, they visited Reims Cathedral and its wine-growing region.
