The Queen's 70th Birthday
I lived in Copenhagen (1965) right after I graduated from college in the US. During my initial stay I saw her father on the balcony of the royal palace upon his birthday.
Several years later I met Queen Margette at a reception in Copenhagen in 1984 celebrating the Danish Institute for Study Abroad Program's( DIS) celebration. She was most gracious and greeted me and my fellow architectural colleagues with great enthusiasm. I was deeply impressed.
I also observed that she was born shortly after the invasion in 1940. My father served in the war from London at that time. He survived. Those days were very difficult for everyone, even the Royal Family in Copenhagen, I'm sure.
My very best wishes to Her Majesty on the 70th Anniversary of her birth.
Sincerely and with great admiration for the Danes and their spirit.

Thanks all for posting the great photos and links. It great to see all the royals together and having a great time.I especially like the photos of the four younger royal couples they all look fabulous and apparently get on well together.
Crown Princess Mary - I love her look tonight, dress, hair and makeup, she has looked wonderful over the whole week. Healthy, happy and beautiful.
CP M-M l also like what she wore, and love the hairstyle, however her posture spoils it a little.
CP Victoria and CP Maxima look great also.
Of course the ladies all had a charming and handsome escort.
However positioned at the top is QM she has certainly been the star of the show.

Thanks everybody for the updates and pics, its a joy to go through one of the rare public royal gatherings. Its a shame that the Spanish are missing out again, JC and Sofia due to the vulcanic ash and the CP couple not scheduled to attend.
All CPs looked absolutely stunning, Mary, Maxima, MM and Victoria, "great gala" in the true sense of the meaning. Future queens from head to toe!
Cant wait for the next huge, huge gathering, Victoria's wedding, the last royal AAA wedding before Prince William where all royal houses will be represented, hopefully we'll see the same simple, elegant and superclassy looks on June 19th!

Maxima and MetteMarit just great.
Mary I like this dress but she could wear something new on this event. (Same with recycle of the red one.) Modern tiara wasn't the bestr choice.
Victoria if she doesn't want wear tiara she could wear this diamonds from Nobels? I think.

A spontaneous kiss from Princess Mary to Frederik after he gave his speech. What a lovely gesture. I liked it :-)

What a wonderful night! All the ladies looked very elegant but I have to agree with several other posters when I say that Mette-Marit and Maxima were the best. Mette-Marit's dress was so beautiful and elegant it really suited her and the hair and make-up just set it off. Maxima's dress was striking and suited her very well.
The Queen and Prince Consort's speeches were wonderful and very touching even though I was just reading the translation. Has anyone been able to translate Frederik's speech?
I have to say I was secretly hoping for some official photo's to be released of the Queen and her immediate family. A lovely up to date family photo with her children and grandchildren would have set the event off nicely.
"Frederik and Mary, Joachim and Marie are our greatest happiness". What a lovely sentiment.

I have to say that I am still hoping to see some official pictures with all the royals. Also I would love to see official photos of the Danish regent couple with their children and grand-children.
Does anyone know whether the Queen's former daughter-in-law Alexandra attended any of the festivities? I always thought the Queen and Alexandra had a close relationship. So maybe she invited her to one of the events?
As it was said several times by some posters that they were also present, can anyone please post pictures of Princess Mary's ladies-in-waiting? I would just love to see their outfits.
Thank you

Thank you for your photos everybody. I love Mary and Frederik, they are very beautiful together. The celebrations of birthday' s Magrethe is very succeed despite this incident. I love the type of celebration because I can see all royals family, with beautiful dresses... Mary is very elegant during this celebration. I am eager to see the marriage of Victoria and Daniel.

Userdane, Tricota and Bettina ,
What is the reaction of the Danes for these 3 long days festivities ??
Are they delighted to speak about the many dresses, hairdo, tiaras of the Queens and Princesses during 3 days . Are you paying for this ? or the RF ?
To tell you the truth, altough I am sad that the 50 birthday of the Crown Prince of Belgium consisted to a visit during the day of his whole family to Ghent, these 3 days were to me a little bit boring...

I presume the RF pay for their own parties.

No pic of the royal couple. Why do you know, that the queen wear a red gown (which one)?

As you can see from the footage there is an enormeous turnout of spectators for these event. Yesterday, an estimated 50,000 people were gathered around Amalienborg to celebrate with the queen. I read Berlingske Tidende, the most monarchy-friendly of the newspapers but still ... and they have run large spreads about the queen. Last Sunday, they included a very nice addition about her.
There is a small republican movement here, probably the smallest in all the Scandinavian countries. They wanted to stage a protest demonstration yesterday but was prohibited - the police said they feared for republicans' safety among all the people.
Their motto by the way, which I heard on the radio yesterday, was 'Margrethe, we would rather have voted for you'. The republicans are having a hard time because Margrethe is so well liked - and not least very respected.
Apart from EkstraBladet which is always negative no matter what I haven't seen many protests. Of course there are also many people who are indifferent about the monarchy as there are everywhere.
For me personally, I think that 'if you have it, flaunt it'. We have a monarchy, we have an excellent opportunity for celebrations - for our queen through 38 years. No better reason for a good old party!
Bored? No one is forced to watch. And no I do not pay for this. Of course you can always discuss who pay for the police etc, which are involved on a day like this, but if my tax money can be used on police security during soccer games, surely they can be used for the queen's 70th as well.
Just my opinion of course.

Some people from another MB who watched danish TV could see her. She wore the red yuki gown which she wore first at Nobel 2007.
