Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik's Visit to Greenland: July 9-23, 2015

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
best thing he could do! BTW I am now in Aarhus and am pleasantly surprised with lack of the flying scourges here!:flowers:

Have you had a nice time here in DK so far?

I guess it's the cool summer. the temperature was 10 degrees lower when we got off the plane late Thursday.

The Queen is sitting more and more even next to the balcony for Carl Philip's Wedding.

yes thanks, it is indeed cool so I shan't be using the swimsuit here. I visited Gamele By today and was very impressed by the gardens and thorough restorations.:flowers:

:previous: Thanks, Archduchess.

Now, have you ever wondered how a Monarch looks like when presented with her absolute favorite topic, prehistory and living archeology?

Even the mosquitoes didn't seem to bother her, that is, if she even noticed them at all.
Apart from being demonstrated how things were done in a Greenlandic hunter-gatherer society around anno 1730, she also tasted dried fish. That wasn't a problem, she's tasted that before. But she also tasted whale meat (perhaps blubber?) and okay, it had been smoked and that helped...

- Nice to hear Gerry. :) Hope you have found time to visit Moesgaard Museum as well.
It's interesting and somewhat unsettling methinks that my childhood is now so far back that typical homes and shops from back then are now part of a museum!
Pity about the summer weather, but at least you won't have a sunstroke...:p

The smoke is also helpful in getting rid of flying tormentors aka mosquitoes, so that is why HM may have been leaning over the fire for a bit....
Moesgaard is on my list for Tuesday and I also did not visit the more recent part of den Gamle By, thinking why should I spend precious time visiting what I already know!

Officially, yesterday was one of QMII and Henrik's few days off. They did, however, find time to pay a visit to the patrol and support vessel Thetis, which these days act as a pilot boat for Dannebrog when sailing through the ice-filled waters in Greenland, and to thank its crew.

A (rough) translation of her speech to the crew: "The Prince Consort and I would like to thank the crew for having so much to get us well through the Greenlandic waters. I hope it too has been an experience for you. I know that you follow Dannebrog to the end of this trip – also after the Prince Consort and I have disembarked it. I hope that the further voyage will be great for you all." (It's always difficult to translate QMII's speeches – she has such an extraordinary vocabulary, it's hard to do her words justice.)

They spent yesterday in Evighedsfjorden (directly translated to English, the Everlasting Fjord) or in Greenlandic, the Kangerlussuatsiaq (which, in return, can be translated to "the rather large fjord" :D), in Kangaamiut. The last picture in the article is Dannebrog entering the fjord – what a beautiful sight:

Great landscapes , just spectacular as said before.
Sad that holidays there are terribly expensive.

TV2 news at 19.00 showed a brief interview with the Regent Couple and at some point QMII was not amused!

That happened when the TV2 journalist asked what the Regent Couple thought about the press speculations in regards to PH not attending various events previously this year.

QMII ended that topic by saying that this had very little to do with the Greenland tour. "And that's that".

"And that's that" :ROFLMAO:perfect.
Lets hope they dont ask her about naming him King :D lol jk

Its been a great trip that im sure the Queen and Henrik enjoyed. There were many beautiful pictures of them with the people and children.

and of course the wonderful pictures of Greenland itself and the Danneborg.

A little trivia based on the Regent Couple's visit to Greenland.

Visiting Greenland means walking on often slippery rocks or climbing slippery wooden stairs and one day both QMII and PH tripped, fell but fortunately didn't hurt themselves.
They are after all 75 and 81 years old now and climbing aboard rubber dinghies in order to get back to Dannebrog is becoming a problem. Because often the helicopter aboard the escort ship can't fly due to fog.
Apart from that there is another problem: "I can't walk slowly and the Prince Consort can't walk fast, so we are actually not a good match these days".

So while QMII is striding away, PH trails behind often with the supporting arm from an adjutant.
The Regent Couple were often seen sitting on chairs that had been brought out for them or leaning on pallets.

About his fall PH said: "No, no, I didn't hurt myself. I'm fine".
And here the new Master of Ceremonies, Kim Christensen, interjected: "It's all part of the daily fall-and-roll drill".
(You may recall that the former Master of Ceremonies, Søren Haslund Christensen, also had a cheeky sense of humor.

That PH has a way with children is no secret as you can see here: https://app.box.com/s/arr9ibjftrczp72yvuv5t14yaq1rvymm

I think the time for such big visits to Greenland is quietly running out for the Regent Couple. A fact they will no doubt deplore because I believe they genuinely enjoy these pretty informal and heartwarm visits to Greenland.

:previous: I wondered how they would manage such a long trip at their age and condition. Having mobility issues of my own, I can relate. When you can't walk 'normally' you tire more easily. They deserve a nice long rest when they get home!

Pictures of the gala dinner hosted by Naalakkersuisut, the Greenlandic government, on 21 July:

QMII held a beautiful speech in which she said (among other things): "Greenland is truly "Nuna Asiilasooq" – "an expansive country." As always, my husband and I have rejoiced over the meeting with the beautiful country and its warm-hearted, hospitable people." (...) "Following many long and eventful visits to Greenland with the Prince Consort and our sons, my red kamiks are now so well-worn that I think I can feel the Greenlandic bedrock through them. As you know, the love for Greenland lives as passionately in the Crown Prince and Crown Princess as in the Prince Consort and I. And last summer, we had the joy of seeing little feet in brand new kamiks when the Crown Prince couple brought their children along to Greenland for the first time. That was a very special joy for the Prince Consort and I, that our grandchildren from an early age are given the opportunity to get a close relationship to Greenland – a relationship that will follow them through their upbringing."

Here's the entire speech:

There has also been a lot of concern from the Greenlandic people that, due to her age, this might be QMII's last visit to Greenland, but in her speech she reassured them that, "we both look forward to our next visit..." and IIRC, when asked about whether this will be their last visit at the press conference some days ago, she said that she definitely thinks not and that she feels perfectly good.

Whereas the engagements on 21 July were more official (visits to the Naalakkersuisut and the Inatsisartut, the government and the parliament), their engagements on the 22nd were more in style with the engagements we've seen previously on the visit – and QMII was dressed in her beautiful Kalaallisuut with Henrik following along in his white anorak. They visited a sewing room, the Court of Greenland, lunched in the Bank of Greenland, QMII visited a nursing home while Henrik visited a Red Cross shop, then they inaugurated a new road (christened it "Aqqusineq Dronning Margrethe II"), visited an exhibition of modern Greenlandic fabric and design, and finished off the day with kaffemik in Nuuk's town hall. At their final kaffemik, the mayor of Nuuk held a very lovely speech in which she said: "The feeling that we're connected remains – also when you travel home tomorrow, even though you're 4,000 kilometres away. I want to end this speech with a quote from The Little Prince where the little prince said to the fox: 'It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye' – so even though tomorrow, you're away from us in eyesight, we've got you in our hearts. A deeply deep-felt gratitude from us to you."

Glad they are okay from their falls.
These trips only get harder with age but it looks like they really enjoy this trip. Hopefully more are yet to come.

And lovely speech by the Queen. She, like the rest of us, enjoyed the CP family in Greenland

It is such a shame this trip ha come to a end, but what a fantastic visit this has been, with amazing, unforgettable photos.

I have a question to ask our Danish friends - I notice that some of the men wear a kind of hooded top/jumper whilst in Greenland - Prince Henrik (and CP Frederik last year) wore a white one and Kim Kielsen wore a fantastic blue one at the gala dinner. What is the name of the garment and can anyone tell more about it?

That is an anorak and that is the national costume for men in Greenland. Usually white but also blue. Why I don't know.
Anoraks became popular back in the 50's and 60's. I even had one when I was a small child. But then they were replaced by coats akin to Canadian Goose.
But the anorak was for whatever reason adopted as a part of the national costume. - It's not as elaborate as the female costume, but then life ain't fair, right? :p

From visiting museums to inaugurating sections of road, the Danish royals' are continuing to enjoy their annual summer cruise.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Consort Henrik are on the second leg or their trip - a two-week official visit to Greenland on board the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.

And today, the Queen looked dazzling as she stepped ashore in the capital, Nuuk, wearing Greenland's colourful traditional costume.
