Mike Etherington-Smith furious after design change to Equestrian cross-country course

Mike Etherington-Smith, designer of the cross-country course in Hong Kong and one of the world’s top designers, is so angry at having to make a last-minute change, at the behest of Princess Haya, President of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), that he has said he will never work for or with them again.

According to this article, Princess Haya changed the course by requesting large boulders be replaced with flowers. This was a cosmetic change, and did not effect the challenges of the course.

Princess Haya said she requested the change out of concern for the safety of the horses. She feared a run-a-way horse could be injured by the stones. Haya said she could never forgive herself, should that happen.

The complete article can be found at Telegraph.co.uk.

Here's the report from the Times online:

Equestrian course designer Mike Etherington-Smith threatens to quit - Times Online

"Mr Etherington-Smith, one of the most respected course designers in the world, was outraged. "It was totally out of order for Princess Haya to intervene..."

Princess Haya, who has been very much a "hands on" president since she took over the reins of the FEI three years ago was unrepentant. "It was not easy to make a stand at that point but in my position I must think of the welfare of the horses and the poor image of the sport that would follow if there were photographs of a horse being injured at the fence," she said. "I had been approached by several people, including some of the team managers, about the fence. We are all in this for the good of the sport - the change was purely cosmetic - it was not altering the dimensions or shape of the fence in any way. "

Injury hits British show jumping medal hopes - Olympics - Telegraph

Princess Haya, who pointed out that she was the first person ever to be elected as President of the FEI as "normally there is only one candidate" said: "It is my job to run (the Federation) more efficiently, and as far as eventing is concerned, to keep the sport in the Olympics. If I ruffle a few feathers, that's unfortunate."

Princess Haya of Jordan aware of her prerogative for equestrianism - Olympics - Telegraph

Haya now has an iron grip on equestrianism's bureaucracy. Some see her as a Thatcherite force for good, dragging the sport into the 21st century and a prosperous future. Others are not convinced.
