Koningsdag 2014-2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Maxima looks fabulous - love her whole outfit, and her joie de vivre. Beatrix looked wonderful as well, and of course W-A (but not much to say about men)

The girls looked very pretty as well - perhaps they want matching dresses, or maybe it cuts down on poor Maxima hearing (why doesn't my dress have that..... why is hers my favorite color????)

Personally I love the way this event works, I think it would be such a shame to change the way it works. I love the idea of the royal family visiting different places each year and joining in the events. I think out of all the events RFs around Europe seem to do this is the most down to earth and fun.
Is the format definitely changing? If so why? Especially as the RF seem to enjoy the current way so much

It´s a sexual provocative image (everyone agreed on that when Miley C came up with that video). King´s Day is a festivity for all dutch people, also for small children.
I know that nowadays nobody seems to care about something like that as we live in a highly sexualised society where even obscenity is mutually accepted.
I also strongly disagree on portaying a lady, who´s a Queen and should be a person of respect ( no matter how much "down-to-earth" and accessible she is) this way! I´d be appalled to be photoshoped like this without my knowledge.

I suppose that depends on how easily one is sexually provoced but I get your point :flowers:.

What an amazing event - this must be the greatest celebration of the year where so many people of one country enjoy a fantastic party.

Really nice that the princesses attended. All three of them stuck to their mother like glue & for good reason. Their dresses were lovely, but tI think that thye start to be a bit too old for identical dresses.

The best thing was of course to see Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette. Wonderful that he recovered and was well enough to attend. His wife seemed very cheerful.

About Anita and her wedges: she has had some difficulties with her spine and I noticed she had difficulties in walking as well. Maybe she chose those for the simple reason of being more comfortable?

Next year: two journalists discussed it on tv on Friday and they came to the conclusion that the court hasn't made a discission yet. However, yesterday prince Maurits told one of the reporters that he didn't think it needed to be changed at all. The king said something simular in Amstelveen: 'why change a winning formula'. And TBH I wouldn't know how it should be changed either. The idea is that the RF comes to a town to celebrate the day with them... What are the options? Esp. since it is a morning event:

- Militairy parade: out of the question.
- Defile a la Juliana: not likely, too feudal and always in the same city.
- A concert (in a stadium): not likely. Too expensive, in the evening and the kingsday concert has been changed this year already. Why have two concerts?

So I think that in priniciple they are stuck with the present form. But perhaps with some changes: visiting one city, come wth a smaller group of people and perhaps focus on more events on a square. This will reduce the security costs.

Now the question of the day was: did the mayor of Amstelveen touch the Queens behind or not?
De Graaf: herken me niet in filmpje - NOS Nieuws

The mayor denies that he did & claims there was at least one centimeter between the hand and the Queen.

A wonderful event IMO. looks like a great time

concerning the alleged touching of the Queen's behind :D

Thanks to everyone who shared links and posted photos etc.
With regard to the mayor's hand, I am quite sure there was nothing untoward about it, but I must say in order to keep one's hand hovering exactly 1cm away from someone person without looking would be miracle!

It seems to have been a fabulous, fun event for all! The royal couple were there amongst others, relaxed and laughing, and Maxima has a character that sparkles!

Yes she does, doesn't she. You can feel her warmth and joy.

I understand that the traditional défilé (parade) which were always held for his grandmother (Soestdijk Palace) and his great-grandmother (Het Loo Palace) will make a return.

His mother changed Queen's Day: no longer the people comes to the palace to bring homage to the Queen, the Queen comes to the people. King Willem-Alexander keeps that element: he will visit a city and there will be a défilé followed by a short walk-around. I think it will all be easier for security and there will be less replacements (logistics between two cities) as was the use "under Beatrix".

I think it is promising. The way Queen's Day has evolued in the last years (after the attack on Queen's Day 2009) was no longer sustainable. It became an immense logistic and security operation for the chosen municipalities to organize it all and a heavy financial burden. King Willem-Alexander is right when he thinks: "It must remain fun", and not an almost military operation to receive royals for a just couple pf hours.

It is not clear to me yet which members of the Royal Family will take part in Koningsdag 'new style'.
Will Princess Margriet and her family still have a role on Koningsdag?
Personally I hope Princess Mabel and her daughters will be seen again on Koningsdag, if not next year, then for the years to come. She still is the Kings' sister-in-law.

Uproar? The media will be happy that the royal family concentrates on four spots in the city and no longer make a long walk. The security services will be happy too because four concentrations are far easier to secure than a kilometres long route.

I suppose some fans may be disappointed *if* RTL is correct. One of the attractions for many was that they were able to make a picture up close with a member of the RF, have a small chat, hand out a present or even pose with them. That could now impossible as according to the press they will move by car, boat or bus and will be more away from the public. It is a pity, but after 'Apeldoorn' I am not surprised about this change. People got killed because a madman thought he had easy access to the royal family. Still, since they were driving in a bus at that moment, I am sure that more safety measures have been and will be taken.

I assume the programme will be shorter than in previous years too, but the press says nothing about that. I also wonder which members of the RF will (continue to) participate. It is likely that the Van Vollenhovens will not. Hopefully at least Constantijn and Laurentien will be there, possibly with their children. I do expect that the three princesses will be present for the entire programme too, but nothing is known for now.

I think the changes are logical and it is nice that the king found a way to honour both his mothers as his grandmothers take on the day. I assume that one of the goals -apart from safety- was also to keep the costs under control, as the costs for the National Day have increased significantly for years. All considering I do not think what else could have been done, it was obvious that the old style was not possible in this day and age anymore. A pity, but that is the world we live in.

agree. Sometimes I believe that the media has just "too much to say". Instead of being thankful that they are given their photo-shoots, etc. they moan of changes. I don't know too many other royals that go out of their way to give fun days for their citizens. In this climate and culture, the King must also think about protecting his family from idiots.

Some more details have been released. Pss Beatrix, Pss Margriet, Prof van Vollenhoven and Pss Mabel will not attend.

The king, queen, their daughters, Prince Constantijn & Pss Laurentien will attend. And so will the princes Maurits, Bernhard and Floris + wives. The attendance of Prince Pieter-Chritiaan and his wife is still unclear.

More details about the programme in Dutch:
Koningsdag eigentijds met oude elementen|Binnenland| Telegraaf.nl

The costs are 1 million euros. 750.000 for the city and 250.000 for the province. In 2012 it was still estimated at 1.7 million and last year it was 1,5 million, so the new style reduced costs significantly. Note that last year 42% of the budget was spend on security.

Well said Winnie. The press is never happy unless they are whining.

Today the program is announced by the First King's new style.

Ouch, this translation has some very awkward phrases..."also Princess Mabel, for understandable reasons, no longer exist"....?
Royalvivian, you may consider using a different translation site, because Google Translate is doing no favours...

A better translation would be: "also Princess Mabel, for understandable reasons, will not be present..."

That would indeed be better... Google Translate has a lot to learn "dutch-wise"

This morning the king and queen went to Leiden to start the 'Kingdom Games'. They were received by 8000 children (what a nightmare!) and by a choir.

The games were started in 2013 and is repeated annually on the last working day before King's Day. 1.2 million primary school children will be involved in sport activities organised by their schools.

Apparently the 'Kinderen voor kinderen' choir made a special song for the day, called 'Energie'. Let's say that the title suits the tune ;).
