He also announced that next year Kings Day will be held in Dordrecht. Some details will change but the essence stayed the same. The RF will only visit one place instead of two.

I understand that the traditional défilé (parade) which were always held for his grandmother (Soestdijk Palace) and his great-grandmother (Het Loo Palace) will make a return.
His mother changed Queen's Day: no longer the people comes to the palace to bring homage to the Queen, the Queen comes to the people. King Willem-Alexander keeps that element: he will visit a city and there will be a défilé followed by a short walk-around. I think it will all be easier for security and there will be less replacements (logistics between two cities) as was the use "under Beatrix".
I think it is promising. The way Queen's Day has evolued in the last years (after the attack on Queen's Day 2009) was no longer sustainable. It became an immense logistic and security operation for the chosen municipalities to organize it all and a heavy financial burden. King Willem-Alexander is right when he thinks: "It must remain fun", and not an almost military operation to receive royals for a just couple pf hours.

It is not clear to me yet which members of the Royal Family will take part in Koningsdag 'new style'.
Will Princess Margriet and her family still have a role on Koningsdag?
Personally I hope Princess Mabel and her daughters will be seen again on Koningsdag, if not next year, then for the years to come. She still is the Kings' sister-in-law.

Uproar? The media will be happy that the royal family concentrates on four spots in the city and no longer make a long walk. The security services will be happy too because four concentrations are far easier to secure than a kilometres long route.

I suppose some fans may be disappointed *if* RTL is correct. One of the attractions for many was that they were able to make a picture up close with a member of the RF, have a small chat, hand out a present or even pose with them. That could now impossible as according to the press they will move by car, boat or bus and will be more away from the public. It is a pity, but after 'Apeldoorn' I am not surprised about this change. People got killed because a madman thought he had easy access to the royal family. Still, since they were driving in a bus at that moment, I am sure that more safety measures have been and will be taken.
I assume the programme will be shorter than in previous years too, but the press says nothing about that. I also wonder which members of the RF will (continue to) participate. It is likely that the Van Vollenhovens will not. Hopefully at least Constantijn and Laurentien will be there, possibly with their children. I do expect that the three princesses will be present for the entire programme too, but nothing is known for now.
I think the changes are logical and it is nice that the king found a way to honour both his mothers as his grandmothers take on the day. I assume that one of the goals -apart from safety- was also to keep the costs under control, as the costs for the National Day have increased significantly for years. All considering I do not think what else could have been done, it was obvious that the old style was not possible in this day and age anymore. A pity, but that is the world we live in.

agree. Sometimes I believe that the media has just "too much to say". Instead of being thankful that they are given their photo-shoots, etc. they moan of changes. I don't know too many other royals that go out of their way to give fun days for their citizens. In this climate and culture, the King must also think about protecting his family from idiots.

Some more details have been released. Pss Beatrix, Pss Margriet, Prof van Vollenhoven and Pss Mabel will not attend.
The king, queen, their daughters, Prince Constantijn & Pss Laurentien will attend. And so will the princes Maurits, Bernhard and Floris + wives. The attendance of Prince Pieter-Chritiaan and his wife is still unclear.

More details about the programme in Dutch:
Koningsdag eigentijds met oude elementen|Binnenland| Telegraaf.nl
The costs are 1 million euros. 750.000 for the city and 250.000 for the province. In 2012 it was still estimated at 1.7 million and last year it was 1,5 million, so the new style reduced costs significantly. Note that last year 42% of the budget was spend on security.

Well said Winnie. The press is never happy unless they are whining.

Royalvivian, you may consider using a different translation site, because Google Translate is doing no favours...

A better translation would be: "also Princess Mabel, for understandable reasons, will not be present..."

That would indeed be better... Google Translate has a lot to learn "dutch-wise"

This morning the king and queen went to Leiden to start the 'Kingdom Games'. They were received by 8000 children (what a nightmare!) and by a choir.
The games were started in 2013 and is repeated annually on the last working day before King's Day. 1.2 million primary school children will be involved in sport activities organised by their schools.
Video and photo:

Apparently the 'Kinderen voor kinderen' choir made a special song for the day, called 'Energie'. Let's say that the title suits the tune .

The weather will be cold and rainy.
