At RTL boulevard it was noted that all three monarchs who were present and who rule over the territory that was handed to Willem I after the Napoleontic wars, actually all descend from that same king. The presentor also remarked how the royals seem to know each other very well - not surprising of course- and that it seemed a meeting of old friends.
I wonder why the German president was invited, perhaps because parts of the country used to belong to the German Bund when the kingdom started? If it is for historical connections: the West used to be much 'closer' to Britain and it was Britain who actually took the initiative to unite the Northern and Southern Netherlands and make it a kingdom.
The German president gave a rather nice speech, and when he finished, he received a hug from the king and a kiss from the queen. The president also referred to the MH17 attack.

Yes, the Dukedom of Limbourg as well the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were memberstates of the German Bund. The King of the Netherlands was also Duke of Limbourg resp. Grand Duke of Luxembourg. I am not sure that was the reason for the invitation of the German President.
Another reason can be that the Benelux and Germany are in the stream area of the Meuse river, which crosses Maastricht (Mosa ad Trajectam) but then the President of France should have been in Maastricht as well.

Germany is the biggest trading partner and both countries have ties that go back for centuries on political, cultural and scientific areas.
That was the reason mr. Gauck was keynote speaker at the international congres that was organized on 30 aug; the royal guests attended the congres

No that was Princess Beatrix in my opinion, very, very glittering. The picture does no justice, on TV it was very glitzy and glammy and the citrine earrings and broche were impressive too.

Princess Irene looks really nice. She's always been the most attractive of Queen Juliana's daughters anyway, at least IMHO.
